Hey I have a cichlid tank with some unknown cichlids im pretty sure theyre from Lake Malawi can you help name them please? Check my channel for the videos.
I'm in Zambia now with a better camera, have some footage of Lake Tanganyika and will be at Lake Malawi for a month during February, so look out for better footage some time in March!
the name is ryan and i m from CA. i jsut got a 20 gallon fish tank. and i cant decide if i want a cichild tank or a convict tank. i already have a male electric yellow in my 55gal fish tank with red parrots and they are doing well. but i am just wondering if electric yello breed easily?
hey ryan, just so that you know, convicts are cichlids as well. They are from south america rather than africa. a 20 gallon is too small for either a mbuna or a convict setup. you may want to look at some Juli's or some type of shelldweller from lake tanganyika.
i think you are wrong about that... you can breed convicts in 20 gallon tanks...actually if you are a convict breeder like me a 20 gal tank is perfect.
AMAZING! I´ll have to go visit one of those lakes one day. Yeah, those lovely african cichlids need the bigger tank we can offer to them. Are we able to buy the original rocks from the lake malawi or tanganika for our tanks like the sand?
If my mbuna could see the computer screen I'm sure they would want to watch too, but they wouldn't be home sick, mine are all tank raised! Thanks again!
speechless!

are there sea stars in lake malawi?

@6nippy8 - not that I know of , though much of the invertebrate life is more what we expect from a marine rather than a lake environment.

these seem to be the only fish in this lake. there must be other species in there somewhere? an eel? a crayfish?

Malawi cichlids are just stunning. Their radiant colors from species to species is incredible. I've had a cichlid tank for 13 years now.

convicts are central american cichlids and can reach 5 inches and a 20 gallon tank is way to small for any cichlids, a 55 gallon is minimal.

Wow, that's really cool. I'm thinking about converting my tank into a cichlid tank. That must have been awesome to actually swim between them.
