Earl Campbell ran with violence. He gave his body to the game, and we need to remember that he is suffering for it now with all kinds of physical problems. He was one of the last true football warriors.
@sandythebear not really, brandon jacobs is much bigger than him and isn't as good as trucking through people, he's kind of just hard to wrap, also I'm pretty sure Earl didn't trash talk as much as Brandon Jacobs.
Earl Campbell has 36 inch thighs while being lean at 245 lbs... Ronnie Coleman, a world-class Olympia Champion and bodybuilder, has 36 inch thighs.
That's pretty good for even professional bodybuilders back in the day. Hell, amazing for an American Football player when weightlifting was still in its primitive days.
The reason Earl is rated so high is not because of the numbers, but because of how unique he was. Those runs will still be shown 200 years from now. We've never seen anything like them before or since. Amazing to watch, and my favourite player of all-time outside my 49ers.
Earl won that collision with Jack Tatum. I can't think of any other back that would have scored after getting hit like that.Tatum was knocked out too.
Earl won that collision with Jack Tatum. I can't think of any other back that would have scored after getting hit like that.Tatum was knocked out too.
2:56 WTF, his body was like "ok I was tackled", but his legs were like "no way buddy, we're on a roll". He was literally tackled, but his legs held him strong. What a player omg
What I always liked best about Earl Campbell was he was genuine. Humble, he never complained, or showboated, even though with his talent he easily could've. Count the number of allpros and HOFers he eludes and runs over in this 4 minute clip. If Bum Phillips hadn't overused him, he would've surpassed Jim Browns rushing mark. One of the best ever!
lets get one thing clear earl brought more to the backfield than his obvious talents he was a good pass protector and he made defenders shake in there boots. he is clearly the most unstoppable force to ever run through the nfl. and i still to this day get chills watching him.
@uckethea I hated Shaun Alexander but he was the closest resemblance I saw to Earl Campbell. As far as being short, stout, but with good speed and running over the defense.
@tng150 I respectfully disagree. I, as a die-hard Seahawks fan, I watched most of Shaun Alexander's games. There were a lot of times he took plays off, especially when he was called on to receive. He didn't care, especially around the end. When he would get corralled, he just fell on his backside, a lot! Also, he wasn't 1/2 the receiver out of the backfield that Campbell was. Campbell ran hard throughout his career & never took a play off.
@Fnoel98356 Yea like I said, I hate Shaun Alexander, people say he was one of those guys who just trucks through players but he was only succesful because he was just a good runner, he just reminds me a little bit of Earl Campbell that's all.
There is nothing out there today to compare to what Campbell brought to the game. Looking back, it's hard to even recollect another back that approached his size, speed, and punishing running style. Yes, you can say Christian Okoye but Steve Atwater put that myth to rest. Jack Tatum, the assassin of his era, gave Campbell the hardest shot I ever saw him take and he left Tatum grasping for air as he spun out and collasped backwards into the end zone. A hit both players never forgot. Great Back.
All of us old heads that saw this game get chills and our eyes well up with euphoria watching this highlight. Frank Gifford was at his absolute best with his commentary that night in Houston. I still remember the words what a performance this man has put on tonight!" I was and still am a Dolphin fan (sadly) but back then we were a very good team. After the game I went to my room looked at a picture of Earl and said in awe and defeat, "...You are the best football player I ever saw."
He's not "next-to" ANY of them, especially Peyton & Sanders. Even Jim Brown would run around defenders when/if he could. Of your list of greats, and they all are, he was the only one who LOOKED for, & even RELISHED contact. I'm not saying the others avoided it, but none LOOKED for contact like Earl.
@JBrewer4386 Well first off there are soooo many other running backs that were better than the Bus that is why he is not on this list. Don't get me wrong, he was one of the best players of his era but top 100 all time? i don't think so. He never led the league in any major categories except most rushing attempts with 375 in 1997. And he had a relatively low YPC average in his career with 3.9 YPC. He is one of the top 100 players of the 90's though.
@rorank IMO Emmitt wasn't that great either. He just had the benefit of of playing on a dynasty with Aikman, Irvin and like you said that great O-line, Which i think is one of the top 5 offensive lines ever btw. But you know there would have been bitch fits coming from every angle if Emmitt Smith was excluded from this list. But honestly Emmitt wasn't even in the top 20 most talented running backs off all time though IMO, He was one of the top 5 most durable though ll give him that.
@rorank I will say this about Emmit Smith, he rarely put the ball on the ground, was a touchdown machine, and had as big a heart as any who played. I remember the game against the Giants that he suffered a significant separation of his clavicle on a hit early in the game. The game was crucial to the Cowboys home field chances and Emmit ignored all advice from the trainers and put the team on his shoulders, running hard throughout and doing things most men would've passed out from.
@Msumner316 While he was a great man and tough as nails, this hardly makes him a great player. While Emmit was a good running back, I think alot of the heavy lifting happened with his pro bowl offensive line.
I haven't seen a back like him since. Just awesome....& an awesome man too. Campbell, Payton & Ottis Anderson were my faves growing up. I haven't seen anybody like any of them since.
@jmfdizog that's why i think campbell is rated too highly here - no way he should be above m. faulk. players like e. smith and franco harris (yep, and i hate the steelers) learned how to NEVER take a square hit. when harris was criticized by a reporter for avoiding contact, he replied "i thought that's what you were supposed to do." it is. that's why smith had 11 1000-yd seasons, and campbell had 5. ahman green had more than that and rodney hampton had just as many, and they ain't here.
@3wolvez It's amazing how much that word gets thrown around today, but if one man only could get that title it'd be Earl Campbell. If I could have three dudes in my backfield it'd be Bo, Barry and The Beast.
I agree ! I'd like to see the wish-bone brought back. My Full-back would be Earl Campbell, with Barry Sanders & Bo Jackson as my half-backs. Who needs to pass ?!!?! I think I need to go clean myself. I just had a wet-dream wide awake !
Earl is easily top 10, LOL, not in the top 50?!!!! Come'on
