I love these cars! I love high revving cars like these. But i've gotta say, i think i'd take a remapped Astra DERV 200bhp with 270lbs torque over one of these. Mainly for the balance of fuel economy and pulling power. At least with the higher torque offered it wouldn't slow down on a hill like a Type R.
@cyanide02 my brother has a 150bhp 1.9 cdti 3 dr astra and it'll do 140mph flatout and it gets there pretty damn quick 0-60 in like 8.6 or something i'd love to drive a re-mapped version though standard is 236lb-ft so that's a nice gain of torque
@Mr330d yeah i've got one too mate. i'm saving to have it remapped to 170bhp off sport button and 200bhp on. I think the torque goes up to somewhere in the region of 270lb-ft. not bad from a dirty derv lol.
@cyanide02 good luck keeping front tires to it lol my brothers eats them i wouldn't mind a vectra 1.9 cdti 150 2008 shape put 19" alloys on it lower it on coilovers and re-map it it's not worth the extra money to go for the 3.0 v6 cdti you don't get that much more power something like 180-190 you could pass that with a re-map for the 150brake and still have change lol she'd be some craic on the motorway outpull most yokes and in fact a mapped astra can keep up with a mapped 330d 235bhp

Not fast but revvy, you can ring the shit out of them all day and they love it. I had a 380hp jzx100 chaser and got bored of it, went back to an ae86, way more fun.

@ayebruzza You kids and your vtec. All honda owners talk about is their "vtec" when they dont even know what it is. Its not a magical force within the engine, and its not a boost. Its just a variable valve timing system which alot of engines have something similar.
@320bit older vtec's used a second VERY aggressive cam lobe which no one else really does, and admittedly it felt pretty cool (in a fun sense). but now a days a Honda engine is very sophisticated, even back then VTEC was Variable valve Timing an Electronic life Control. now they can say how wide the valve opens and for how long ontop of the second cam. they can open intake valves to avoid pumping loss and even compress 10.5:1 on reg gas because of a cooling oil pump. very nice

@sausagenmuff Honestly, the ONLY thing FWD is good for is to keep power loss at a minimum. In every other aspect its uselss. You can only put so much power (like 500hp) in a FWD car before it will hardly be drivable. Youll have massive torque steer, understeer, thats if the lift off oversteer doesnt kill you since you removed all the weight from the car to make it lighter so the rear wheels have no traction.

@kalemdor1 Doesnt matter if I was born in the 80s or not. And I dont have to list any small engine that can do 0 to whatever. My lawnmower could do 0-60 with an engine half that size if I wanted it to since it would basically weight as much as a motorcycle. In a practical car, small engines are not powerful enough. I dont even know one honda that can do 0-60 in 6.5 seconds without forced induction. So buy a real car, and get to 60 in under 4 seconds.

@kalemdor1 Plenty of new Mercedes do 0-60 in under or mid 4 seconds. 6.5 seconds isnt considered "fast". Thats hardly even considered "sporty" anymore. If my 97 can do 0-60 in 7.1 seconds, then why would 6.7 to 7 seconds be considered sporty? My car was never even meant to be sporty and yet its still faster. The NSX does not count as it has a V6 not a 4 cylinder. Thats only car you honda owners have to bring up thats fast, and then they dropped it years ago!
@kalemdor1 Well actually you can pick up older model Mercedes that can do 0-60 in the mid low 5 second range. And you can always buy the C32 for around $12k and it does 0-60 in 4.5 seconds.

@320bit the issue is, most engines are most efficient at about 75% of there rpm range. so bigger engines have more loss of energy. THAT is the main reason honda likes 4cyl. that tax thing is said a lot but not really a factor anymore.
Here in America companies like ford dodge and chev are starting to switch to high power smaller 4cyl, very similar to Honda's . even BMW has announced for 2012 they are ditching there straight6 for a line of highpower aluminum 4cyl. remind you of anyone?

Look at the 3.2L V6 from Mercedes producing 350hp. As I said before, 6.5 seconds was considered sporty in the mid 90s. Today sports cars will do it in around 4 seconds. 6 seconds flat would be like an entry level sports car. Get with the times.

@WheelChairBndit The Taurus starts at like $30k. And how do Mercedes waste their power? The C250 has 201hp from a 1.8L 4 cylinder starts at $32k and goes from 0-60 in 7 seconds. Which is the same as my 97 C280 and my C280 is listed as having 197hp. Obviously there is a weigh difference between the 2 cars, so 7 seconds for a 1.8L in a big luxury saloon is pretty nice.
@320bit their AMG models waste it by having 600+ hp and being slower than everything else. despite the weight, none of it goes to the ground. but 7 sec 0-60 is still respectable for any car. Audi does the same thing too as far as being a luxury saloon. and i would NEVER pay $30000 for a taurus lol.

Being it around 5 seconds faster to 60 and having a top speed double is more than beating a no forced induction 1.6L engine. Im not even sure Mercedes makes an engine that small to compare to. Im sure the A series would be more than happy to step up. But again, no one cares about small 4 cylinders unless they are powering my riding mower.

Whereas Im sure a quick google would point you in the right direction of a similarly priced $3k car with a bigger displaced engine will provide you with much more starting power to play with.

HP is POWER "work done over time" and what dictates your say 0-60 times. your overall power to accelerate. TORQUE is the twisting power your engine puts out. remember there interchangable; TORQUE x RPM / 5252 = HP . always

The thing is... Where I live, there is NO technical tracks, no track days or anything. We have a drag strip, Thats it.. :/ Personally for me its not about the horsepower, its all in the turns :D I would never boost my car either. I am all about the N/A tune. If I want to have a turbo charged car, I will buy Subaru, or some other car that is meant for a turbo. If I turbo'd my car, I would need to replace my engine internals. It's not worth the hassle for me
i dont understand why HONDA owners sweat over VTEC, i mean every damn car now has some kind of valve timing control, subarus run AVCS and evos run MIVEC and you never hear a subaru owner SAY, ohh MY AVCS DIDNT POP! or the same for an evo, we even disable the cams, plug them and just run bigger cams without valve control, shits weak, its mostly for emissions or low end power, it also helps for idling big cams but other than that , weak sauce!!
@Disaster646 no other valve timing is as good as vtec. Honda revolutionized the way engines are built. In the world of variable valve timing engines, Honda is king :) . Vtec originally started on motor cycles as REV (Revolution-modulated valve control) It was first introduced as a DOHC Vtec on the 1989 integra. Vtec was a way of optimizing the engines output at low and high rpms. I like it because it makes my 2 litre engine deliver a little over 200 hp without needing a turbo.

@RWhiiT VTEC allows a N/A engine to reach higher torque at higher RPMs. You either build for horsepower or torque with an N/A engine because of the intake characteristics. Smaller valves make more low end torque, while free flowing heads make better horsepower.
VTEC does both with the use of an extra set of valves.

@sausagenmuff Honestly, the ONLY thing FWD is good for is to keep power loss at a minimum. In every other aspect its uselss. You can only put so much power (like 500hp) in a FWD car before it will hardly be drivable. Youll have massive torque steer, understeer, thats if the lift off oversteer doesnt kill you since you removed all the weight from the car to make it lighter so the rear wheels have no traction.

My lawnmower could do 0-60 with an engine half that size if I wanted it to since it would basically weight as much as a motorcycle. In a practical car, small engines are not powerful enough. I dont even know one honda that can do 0-60 in 6.5 seconds without forced induction. So buy a real car, and get to 60 in under 4 seconds.

If my 97 can do 0-60 in 7.1 seconds, then why would 6.7 to 7 seconds be considered sporty? My car was never even meant to be sporty and yet its still faster. The NSX does not count as it has a V6 not a 4 cylinder. Thats only car you honda owners have to bring up thats fast, and then they dropped it years ago!

@320bit the issue is, most engines are most efficient at about 75% of there rpm range. so bigger engines have more loss of energy. THAT is the main reason honda likes 4cyl. that tax thing is said a lot but not really a factor anymore.
Here in America companies like ford dodge and chev are starting to switch to high power smaller 4cyl, very similar to Honda's . even BMW has announced for 2012 they are ditching there straight6 for a line of highpower aluminum 4cyl. remind you of anyone?

The thing is... Where I live, there is NO technical tracks, no track days or anything. We have a drag strip, Thats it.. :/ Personally for me its not about the horsepower, its all in the turns :D I would never boost my car either. I am all about the N/A tune. If I want to have a turbo charged car, I will buy Subaru, or some other car that is meant for a turbo. If I turbo'd my car, I would need to replace my engine internals. It's not worth the hassle for me

i dont understand why HONDA owners sweat over VTEC, i mean every damn car now has some kind of valve timing control, subarus run AVCS and evos run MIVEC and you never hear a subaru owner SAY, ohh MY AVCS DIDNT POP! or the same for an evo, we even disable the cams, plug them and just run bigger cams without valve control, shits weak, its mostly for emissions or low end power, it also helps for idling big cams but other than that , weak sauce!!

@Disaster646 no other valve timing is as good as vtec. Honda revolutionized the way engines are built. In the world of variable valve timing engines, Honda is king :) . Vtec originally started on motor cycles as REV (Revolution-modulated valve control) It was first introduced as a DOHC Vtec on the 1989 integra. Vtec was a way of optimizing the engines output at low and high rpms. I like it because it makes my 2 litre engine deliver a little over 200 hp without needing a turbo.

@RWhiiT VTEC allows a N/A engine to reach higher torque at higher RPMs. You either build for horsepower or torque with an N/A engine because of the intake characteristics. Smaller valves make more low end torque, while free flowing heads make better horsepower.
VTEC does both with the use of an extra set of valves.
