And if you buy a soft bit and don't yank on your horses mouth you don't have these problams. Some people yank on their horses mouth which causes the horse a lot of pain as seen in this video. But that is not the fault of the bit but the rider using it. And a lot of horses open there mouth trying to get the bit out. They aren't doing this because they are in pain they are doing it because they want to get out of work.
In my opinion, begginer riders should not use, neither beginner HORSES. Only after my mare be good in bitless I'll try a snaffle.
First time she was ridden it was with snaffle, she had no idea how to answer to it. 'twas even safer to go on halter then with a bit :)

First: depends on te bit.
Second: does not justify the use of a bit for every horse and every rider.
I don't think bits are always hurting, but I do believe they always have such risk.
Therefore, why use it if you're not needing it? (if you need it to cause pain, though, it's not a bit that you need but some good training).
