This Englishman loves Thommo. I wish they'd have had the speed gun back then. Despite his murderous bowling, he's always come across as the perfect gent when talking cricket in his post career.
That's one of the strange things about cricket - too often it seems a player is given the responsibility of captainship simply because they were the best in their one particular talent. It doesn't seem to happen the same in any other sport.
@thesparrow14 the only injury he ever had was a surfing injury, and considering he was bowling 155+ i'd say he held up better than most modern players do
@shutuprafa Wouldn't have mattered if Warne had become captain. He retired at the same time all the other good players and wouldnt be captaining the average players Thommo refers to in this video.
@bongo155 Yeah, that's obviously true. But Ponting really shouldn't have been captain in the first place. Gilly and Warne would have made for better captains. It's hard to argue against Ricky's record and he was younger, but he never did much to develop and improve his players. Warne has shown a real eye for talent and has improved his players. yes, t20 and test captaincy aren't the same, but I think he would've left the team in 07 in better shape than it was in had he been captain.
Thommo is always honest and frank and says what he thinks and anyone who doesn't like it can go and get stuffed. He is asked for his opinion and he gives it, not like most commentators today who are too gutless to say what they really think.
Thomson is a crap. Ponting is not the best captain around and he is not among the best Australian captains. but who is Thomson to say that?! Thomson was a captain was he? he was an illiterate junk who could bowl fast for some time. He is not even among the legends of fast bowling of Australia! Thomson wouldn't have a place even in the best Australian XI. At least Ponting has a chance of getting a place in the upper middle order.
this was a corporate event where special guests are expected to speak their mind. he could have just said that he is the best that australia had to pick from but gave the crowd some value for money and a point of interest for debate.
don't take it too seriously or too personal fuckstain
it is what it is but you are trying to turn it into something else. it was a corporate event where Thompson was paid to be interviewed and to give his opinions which would entertainment and perhaps provide talking points for those in attendance. it seems that he has delivered.
the irony is that you seem to think that Thompson does not have the credentials to give an informed opinion yet here you are giving yours. stop being a cock knocker.
Thommo doesn't have a diplomatic bone in his body. Years ago he used to write a column called "In my garden" for Picture magazine. It was full of stuff like "The f**ken slugs have eaten all me f**ken lettuces and s**t everywhere. F**K EM!"
@Tuxy69 They did have speed tests back then, not in games, but in the nets, and if you search 'first speed test' or something similar you see that out of 8 balls, jeff thompsons fastest was 92 mph...about 145-150kph? Brett lee and Akhtar are the fastest ever
@lozzag13 they did have radar however nowhere near as accurate today, and lets face it the adrenalin of bowling in a test match adds an additional 10kph than a net session. Clive Lloyd, Geoff Boycott etc still maintain today no-one could touch the extreme speed of Thommo in full flight.
@Tuxy69 and i suppose they've both faced lee and akhtar? anyway, pace doesn't mean good, dale steyn is not maybe as fast as thompson, but he is by far one of the best bowlers ever, he reached 200 test wickets in 39 games, only 3 bowlers in history have beaten that
@Tuxy69 Thommo would struggle to break 150kmph, he is a mug. He played 3 Test matches in the sub continent in his whole career and took 3 wickets for over 300. In modern day cricket his body would brake down within a year. He is an idiot.
@thesparrow14 so in your qualified opinion what is your point? I am talking about the speed he could bowl not his sub continent record or the fact he's an idiot/mug. The fact is he took 200 wickets playing for Australia and struck fear into all opposition batsmen during the 70's.
@thesparrow14 dude in 1978, he was clocked at 99mph by the time it passed the batsmen, meaning that you ad roughly 11 - 15% pace on to mease it before the bounce (out of the hand), meaning he was over 170kph, which was faster than Holding and khan. But yeah just the fastest mug ever i guess...
Don't sugar coat it Jeff Thomson, tell us what you really think about Ponting.

michael clarke is a much better captain. being the best batter on the team doesnt mean he should automatically be captain.
