@iluvmyroom YEAH! i loved my dp2, I might consider if they are coming out with dp3 in the coming future, that Foveon sensor is damn sexy! the photos are just unique
i wish other manufacteurs would use this too.. x1 is a little too pricey for me.. but it really seems to be a nice camera that was obvisously designed by photographers : )
@BadWithNames123 dude, with "preview scale" you can't mean the depth-of-field scale right? because it's been there for around 70 years now on every camera that has any manual modes. except for AUTO-mode only cameras you always need that scale.
@akpresse my sony alpha 100 didnt have it.. my nikon 90 did not have it , my nikon d300 did not have it , my sony alpha 900 did not have it , my samsung x100 did not have it ..
@BadWithNames123 it's called the depth-of-field-scale.. you find it on every lens that has manual focus.
the depth-of-field scale mostly contains of simple markings in colorpaint for each aperture setting (1.4, 1.8,...11, 22, 32) along with a meter-scale that's printed on the focusing ring.
basicaly the markings point to the meters, depending on where you focus.. reading the markings for the aperture you set you see something like: "oh, ap1.4, depth-of-field will be 0.5 metres!", old.
@akpresse i know that there are dlsr lenses that have a depth of field scale.. but have you looked at recent cameras like the sony new, samsung nx, panasonic gh1 and gf1 series and their lenses and mirror less systems in general.. hardly any of them have a depth of field scale on the lens anymore.. and leica x1 is pretty much the only manufacture with a depth of field scale on the camera display :P
@BadWithNames123 alright, I see your point. However, most of these cameras don't have manual focus, or?
(if they do and even the manual doesn't even come with a depth-of-field scala, then I admit epic fail to them.
I know the dof for most of my cameras outta the head, some of my older cams [1920 pocket mid format agfa etc.] don't come with a scale too, but it's in the manual and you can hit it up there at least. But sure: when it comes to comfort it's a great feature)
but there are no scales or anything on the lenses.. basically like a kit lens on nikon, canon etc. you can just turn a ring and the camera magnifies the live view but there are no manual focus scales or anything..
thats why i liked the leica x1 solution because other mirror less cameras have not even a simple focus scale like you have on prime lenses for dslrs
That's how I shoot my FED3 or Zorki 4k rangefinders. Focus on something that's the approximate distance you WILL be from your subject then shoot when in range.
I know this maybe a stupid question and some what not related to this video. But I was just wondering which 50mm leica summicron is better. Is it type 2(rigid) or type 3 or the type 4(with a focusing tab)?
Looking forward to know how you hold the x1 or even the m9. I got an m6 and haven't find the best way to hold it yet, some tips on holding/transporting cameras would be great, like bags review, wrap, etc... Keep up the good videos ! Great b&w btw, look grainy as a tri-X film !
how fast is the manual focusing wheel? do you find you're waiting for the camera lens or like the computers to keep up with you in hurried situations?
Dude this is the best informational video (I think) because i have a rangefinder, a Bessa R2a, I've been trying to learn how to use zone focusing. Well not really, I need some cheap film to experiment with but once i do it will be great and awesome to use
yeah lets have a mijonju show halloween special! great pre-focusing tips, really useful thanks! I have always struggled with street photography for this very reason so this has helped me loads.
Pre focusing/zone focusing is one of my favorite ways to focus. I like being able to set the cameras focus and exposure before hand. Like being sneaky haha. The less time you have the camera to your face durring street shooting the better. Also if you happen to have a wider lens then you can just shoot from the hip or with your arm extended above your head ect. =)
I just got back to tokyo from singapore and I missed it here so much... and loook, Mijonju on my homepage when i open my laptop. How lucky.
I really am liking the X1 now that I have seen this photo. One question though, if you shoot black n white straight from the camera, do you lose the color data for post processing? as in split toning or whatever-it-is-called.
@Whiteboyintokyo if you shoot in Raw, then you can get the color for other processing, but i only shot at black and white JPG, and because it was just for this video didn't though of shooting in raw
Still love this episode, nearly convinced to get the X1.
I guess the viewfinder is vital to have fitted most of the time?
OM-D soon........?

Iso 3200 is very impressive on the x1.
The from camera jpegs look really great in this video. I read a lot about the jpegs being pretty duff- pleased to see they are better than stated.
Have you made any large prints from the x1?
Curious to know just how big I will be able to print.
Thanks again 10/10 :)

I was pretty focused through the whole video but when you pulled out the Rollei 35 I kinda jumped back and said whoa. I kinda love that camera.

Mijonju-
What range of shutter speeds were you using for the night time shots in the video?
ISO 1600 with the X1 wide open at F2.8 hand held, impressive sharpness.
Did you post process any of the images shown?
Thanks for this video and I love your style.
