a twist serve is a fictional serve in prince of tennis usually used by ryoma and ryoga echizen, it is a kick with an additional twist so when the ball land it really 'twist' and bounce in the face of the reciever
@joben0002 actually the American Twist serve exist, it was one serve that sampras hitted the most, is a mix of top spin serve (kick serve) and an slice serve, whit the ball bouncing high, but to the left and it used it to follow that serve to the net
@joben0002 yeah.. No. A twist and a kick are the same thing, kick serve or american twist are the exact same serve. Prince of tennis just exaggerates everything to keep people interested (it works) and ryomas twist is pretty much JUST like rogers. So it is NOT fictional.
what is the difference between a topspin serve and a kick. Also what is the difference between a kick and an american twist. I know the difference in the bounces and stuff but what is different about how you hit it.
@SexyLeprechaun28 Kick=topspin serve, nothing else. You use more of an eastern grip, somewhere in between your flat serve (continental/slightly western grip) and backhand grip (completely eastern). Toss the ball behind your head. The further back the more spin you get but less speed. It's hard to do use that grip at first, but you'll get used to it. American twist is like a slice which is more with the wrist but the toss is the same as kick serve. So you get slice/topspin all at once.
@hattrickster33 Thats not right. Kick serve is topspin+side spin. We all know topspin makes the ball bounce higher but we dont call a topspin forehand aa kick forehand. If you look at the videos ball flight path it swerves, becaise it swerves sideways, u would expect the ball to skid to the right of the receiver but instead it bounced off to the left. Thats because its top+sidespin, when the ball is flying at that angle, it grabs the ground wen it hits the floor and bounces off in that direction
I get what you're saying, but it jumps to the left at what degree?
I picked up my racket just now and I tried your serve. It's not much different than a reverse kick serve for me. But you need to be aware that people with tennis elbow or a bad shoulder due to overpowered serving aren't able to perform this, (or my reverse twist of course)....well they can try, but it'll only dislocate their whole arm :]
Hey anyone ever thought of creating a new and improved reverse twist serve?
I did it by accident in one of my local 16 under tournaments. Then I stuck with it.
It's actually a lot easier than perfecting your kick serve. I can't really explain how I do it, but when I serve the ball, it bounces backwards, towards the pole on that side of the court. Of course, it doesn't always work as I want it to, yet. But having it curve 90 degrees is pretty hard for a normal player to return anyway.
an American Twist serve is when you brush the ball from 8 to 2 so u have topspin and sidespin. for a right hander it curves down into the box due to topspin and curves to the left due to the sidespin. because of the ball movement, when the ball bounces it kicks upwards and also kicks to the left. this is an ideal serve type when you wanna serve it out wide to the right. you can do this serve by throwing it directly above your head. been playing tennis for 14 years so i know what i am on about!!!
lol you are all so wrong!! a kick serve is when you apply topspin to the ball so itsort of drops inthe box. u do this by brushing the ball from 6 to 12. u can do this by throwing the ball above ur head and slightly to your left. When it bounces it kicks upwards. A slice serve is when you hit the ball from 9 to 3. you can do this by throwing it in front of you but slightly to the right. it stays nice and low when it bounces.
Putting that in easier terms for all the beginners out there, throwing the ball a little bit to the left is basically like throwing it inside the court area :]
It is when You brush the ball with your racket both upwards (topspin) and sidewards (slice) this makes the ball slice in wards to begin with but then on landing it Kicks off to the right, if your a right handed player. This is achieved by pushing the racket out and finishing by the right leg rather than across the body by the left leg (again if your right handed). Hope that helps.
tull06 is partially right. A kick serve is just a serve that is with topspin and no slice. But what he is talking about is the "American Twist" serve, which he said kick + slice. The difference is that the kick serve just travels in a straight line id say and bounces high, and the american twist travels in a curve that goes left and when it bounces it goes right.
uhhh no.... A kick serve bounces high and off to the right like "tull06" said. And a slice serve stays low and moves left. The American Twist is the exact opposite of the slice serve, its when you brush the ball to the left which is difficult to do cause its not a natural arm motion. The American Twist stays low and moves to the right.
ok dont listen to "willobillo0714".."tull06" is absolutely right...a kick serve is when you apply topspin and some slice to the ball by brushing up and to the right. This applies somthing in between a sideways spin and topsin which makes the ball bounce high and off to the right. The American twist serve is when you brush the ball to the left which is extremely difficult to do because its not a natural motion, its the exact opposite of a slice serve. And everything I said was for a right hander.
I looked up more videos and i could not find any serve that you brush from the right to left (right handed). You sure about what you're saying? Anyway I don't think an unatural arm movement serve will be effective...
ok to better understand wat im saying....the American Twist serve for a right hander is the same as a kick serve for a left hander and vice versa.......you dont literally brush the ball from right to left, you dont stand there with ur racket out in front of you and then swing up and to the left lol, its hard to explain. For instance, the kick serve federer just hit bounced up and to the right (from Fed's point of view), if he had hit an American Twist it would have bounced up and to the left.
...at least thats wat I've been taught. and thats what i've heard it been called, cause i have heard many different serves called the american twist....like i've seen people hit slice serves and they turned around to me and said that was an american twist when it was clearly not...but who knows lol....but if you do find out what a true American twist serve actually is then let me know haha
the people who design the court don't care about the interest of your eyes. They changed the color of the court so everyone could see the ball better. green and green isn't really smart.
i am well aware of this. on a tv with a good picture, though, seeing the ball isn't a problem.. the court is grass green and the ball is neon yellow. anyways, the blue court's ok. not a huge deal
well, i mean, if you're one of the audience who paid good money but sits far back in a corner of the stadium chances are you won't see the ball too well
Really? I thought they changed the court because Lleyton didn't like it. No other pro went out of their way to criticise it, either for speed or colour; in fact, since the new courts rolling out, some have gone out of their way to mention their liking of the old court (which I miss too).
Well you know lleyton if his games off, it's not his fault. and if you see a match live and you are way up top it's really not that easy to see the green ball on sunny aussie day on a green court. Who wants the old court back?
the serve is rogers weapon, if he had a regular serve he would be an ave player. Thats why he is soo good in tie breakers. Nadal broke Roger 3 times and Roger only broke Nadal once in 08 wimbledon. Tie breakers and serve is what kept roger in match
A kick serve is basically when the server throws the ball behind his head, and then uses his racket to brush over the ball and (for a good kick serve) gets his whole shoulder into it. There is generally a great deal of topspin hit on a kick serve, especially on this one that Fed hit. Also, generally (by the pros) kick serves are used on second serves due the how much slower they are than the standard serve.
98 MPH is slow for Fed's 2nd serve, but that placement was ridiculous, and the ball had so much action on it that by the time Kiefer got to it it was behind him. Even if he had gotten a racket on it it would have flown wide.
Wtf? Extra topspin? No... All it is, is that the serve looks like it is curving into the player, or being angled into the player, but instead the ball just kicks away from the player when it hits the ground.
funny how roger, let´s out a little grunt, when he kick serves:) considering he usually doesn´t make any vocal sound, when he hit´s other shot´s.

You can also make the ball bounce to the right if your serving on the left side. or vice versa
