My Genelec's are also good at the other side of the room! And good speakers that are as close to neutral as it can get, the kind of music you listen doesn't really matter.
Adams are clean, love the ribbon tweets but the S3X I heard sounded lost to me, lacked cohesiveness, possibly because of lack of vertical or horizontal alignment?
hi there.help please.I wanna buy monitors and I have 1000 euro..I'm producer of progressive trance music,so drums and bas is the most important sounds in my music..witch monitors will be best choice? I need monitors as flat as it's possible for the money I give.
Thank you for doing this. . As a producer of acoustic folk and blues singer songwriters, , No bands, no Hip Hop. Pure natural real monitor response is absolutely a necessity. I have taken a liking to the KRK product line. What is the opinion here? Thanks.
@kelvinvv While I love B&W more than any other loudspeaker company, I don't think they really do modern studio monitors, which is why you won't find them in a review of studio monitors. I might be mistaken though.
@Alfonzo227 abbey road use b&w speakers in the control room in studio 2. the guy in the video doesn't know what he is talking about. the best hifi systems aim to give the flattest response possible. every decent studio around the world uses yamaha NS!0's as nearfield monitors as 'they don't lie' and they were made in the 70's as a hifi speaker. active monitors have amplifiers in the speaker cabinet as opposed to a stereo amplifier. they still add colouration to the sound.
No JBLs? I also noticed KRKs are popular with Heavy Metal. What would you suggest for SM57 miking an ENGL Powerball amp (scooped metal style) through Apogee's ensemble interface to a MacBook Pro (15") running Logic? I'm also planning on an Avalon channel strip or two-Sweet! I keep being told JBLs are best by Guitar Center reps, but I think they aren't recording Metal, though I like their remote cotrol option, yet I'm still considering good KRK's.
this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. the best HIFI systems aim to give a flat response not add colouration to the sound wave. The only difference between active monitors and hifi speakers is that the amp is inside each active monitor, it still adds colour to the sound.
I think it all depends on how u hear music n sounds .we hear diff when listening to music or maybe it depends on what u like in your music and then come da good monitors ,just my opinion .
I found that the Fostex monitors were much better than KRKs for music production. The KRKs have too much bass for my mixing on pro tools. KRKs were great for my DJ setup when playing hiphop......just my opinion.
I have the adams 5x. But i dont hear alot of base cause i have no subwoofer.
I producer hip hop, R&B, Pop with a lil Rock. Do you think that my speakers are good for what im trying to do. The room I mix in is good size bedroom. B
@LariGuap The adam 5s have great top end but you're right there isn't a great deal of bass response. I'd recommend getting the Adam sub7 or upgrading to the Adam A7X or A8X. For the style of music you're producing without that low end response you'll always be guessing with you sub bass as you can't really hear it properly.
I produce hiphop/dance music, and i own a pair of KRK Rokit 5's. Got to say, they really are the best 5 inch speakers for this kind of music you can get, at least in my opinion.
Event Opals? Rated best? Please.... no offence on a well made, informative video - but this is all information only useful to people who just bought their first sampler and think they will be the next big thing.
The best speakers are ideally the ones with the most flat response. Any decent Morel/KEF/Focal Utopia/B&W 8 series (I could go on and on) would destroy any of those and anything that Future Music thought was the best.
Home loudspeakers are not intended to “colour” the sound in any way. Certainly it is not the intension of most loudspeaker designers. In fact, the basis of a good loudspeaker is to be as neutral sounding as possible. To imply otherwise is disingenuous.
this video is useless, we compare audio monitors with different characteristics and different economic bracket .. Besides, presented audio monitor that are worth little more than simple audio speakers ..
So the speaker capability is still not maximized, but it'd feels really loud in the room.
Is that really true (for the volume of my room)?. Because, he suggested me for using 5inch monitor or 6inch. And that would be the KRK that he sells. haha
But I still have a doubt in it. Still wanted to choose Yamaha, or Adams if the room is really compatible with 5 inch :D.
Thanks for uploading this. Now, (at least) I know a bigger picture for buying a pair of speaker monitors. I have three options, between Yamaha HS-80, Adams A5X, or KRK RP6.
One of a seller told me that when we want to buy a monitor speaker, remember to consider the broad of the room. I have this room about 5.5mx2.7mx3.1m. Well, honestly I want to buy Yamaha HS-80, but he told me that it'd be too loud for the room.
What is the point of having the louder low end like you mentioned in the Rokkits? I wanted a set the of the 8's but is the point not to have the sound unmodified?
You don't want colouring of sound but you still need to be able to accurately reproduce bass, mids and highs.
Cheaper and smaller monitors will not be able to output as much bass as a more expensive, bigger one does. It's just physically and technically not possible.
Most monitors also have a x-over that can output to an additional subwoofer for even more accurate and powerful bass reproduction.
@chickuhnsrcool It takes a myriad of playback devices to get the final idea of whats going to be on the recording. Each may present a problem that wasn't noticeable on the last. Even taking your recording into a car to see what problems you encounter there. What it all comes down to is the realization that the Yamaha NS-10 shares most in common with a factory car stereo than it does with a real set of monitors. The NS-10's purpose in the studio is to hear the worst case scenario.
For General everyday home studio: SPEND TILL IT HURTS
The NS-10 is like the "control group" it represents what your recording will sound like on SHITTY speakers. If they are your only monitors, you are using them incorrectly and you are missing out on so much. They are only to be used as part of the equation in achieving good sound.
@EricShookRools The next models of NS 10s are HS 50s and HS 80s.They are availiable in every musical shop and are wonderful active power monitors.I personally use HS 50s.They have incredible real sound.
@Mr641026 As to what the newer ones have become -- who knows.
You might want to read into the history of the NS-10 as what it was before it was brought into the studio. It started as a home use stereo speaker, and was easily one of the worst sounding on the market. (which is why it was first brought into the studio)
If Yamaha was smart enough to take advantage of the cult appeal and rewrite it's own history by putting forth a real effort in their later models. Then good for them.
@EricShookRools wow, that is a BIG STUPID conclusion against a thousands and more qualified and prooved sound engineers than you, who have worked with NS-10s, won a lot of awards, sold a billion records over their carreer, and swore in their performance because of the pure stereo representation. Dude, you are so corny, fuck OFF!!!
Youtube won't let me post links in comments, but just google "NS-10 History". You'll get the skinny.
I'm not a sound engineer, but I am good friends with a lot of the people you might idolize. I'm a transducer engineer. (That means I make speakers -- AUDIOPHILE ones too)
@EricShookRools Dude, listen, the producer I work with, has the NS10s for almost 30 years, and they are still great. After we make the mastering,we always check on the NS10.if the mix sounds great on these, then definetely sounds great everywhere. It's easier to implement the electromagnetic induction to make transducer work, cos the the sound is captured in 1 dimensional medium, but the problem is when sound propagates in 3 dimensions,&here the pure sound representation is so handy
@EricShookRools what you just say ??? they are very easy to find but that cause most of the ones you buy have problems that doesnt mean there the worst there an industry standard speaker
I put stacks of copy paper to elevate the tweeters on my studio monitors up to ear level.
Q: Do all monitors give out a slight audible hiss? Does the hiss I have with my studio monitors have a function for measuring audio level perhaps? Otherwise I have to keep my studio monitors about 1m off my ears to let the hiss dissipate so I don't hear it when the audio track is quiet.
@InstantUsername Hiss isn't supposed to be there, but even in ideal situations it's still there at high enough volumes. First make sure you are using balanced connections with no frayed wires. Then make sure that speaker cable lines are not parallel with power lines. Lastly, make sure you get a good power conditioner for your speaker amps. That should help reduce it, but depending on the speaker even the internal components of the speaker can cause that hiss.
how come you didnt do a review with maudio bx8 can you explain why have have a constant hissing noise theres are 500 dollar studio monitors and there brand new and hiss but everyone who own a pair said they are doing this
@Pvtchrislee07 Alright, I'll reiterate, swap out your monitors for some other ones if you can, the BX8s are infamous for the hiss, I'd assume it's the amp being a bitch.
@Pvtchrislee07 I have a pair of BX8 D2s. This hiss you are experiencing is NOT the amplifiers. You have a ground loop. Go buy yourself a Behringer hum destroyer for £20 or so it will get rid of the hiss. It won't get rid of the low hum sound that the speakers themselves make but when sound is coming out of these speakers you will not hear this low hum.
@dkyx Me too. I have recently been thinking about maybe going to krk's or behringer as an additional ref monitor since the wife has me on an audio budget.
@budman6565 In my opinion, a 2nd set of monitors isn't the way to go.
Rather get a good pair of hi-fi speakers for quick A/B-ing between your Mackies and the regular speakers, so you will know it sounds good on regular hi-fi sets aswell.
Work on your nearfields, then switch to make sure it translates well enough to the regular speakers.
This also has the benefit of keeping your hearing fresh enough and won't make you have to get used to another set of nearfields and their characteristics.
Some other brands that this store doesn't carry that you all should look in to if you are wanting serious monitors: Dynaudio and Genelec. Genelec is the high end industry standard and Dynaudio is their main competitor. Make sure to go listen to the monitors before you buy. Buy something that you enjoy listening to, since all monitors have 'bias' that you will have to get used to anyway.
I would suggest going for the smaller KRK Rokit monitors, then continuing to save until you can buy the KRK K10s sub and some room treatment (sound dampening, bass traps, etc.) if you haven't already.
I'm Using the Behringer 1031A.... unbeatable for its Price & Performance, as good as KRK RP8 or Yamaha HS80..... Trust me !....... My home studio set up : iMac via Focusrite Pro 24, Mackie MR8 Mk II, Dynaudio BM5A with 1031A...... the 1031A are true value..Hands down.
My favourite monitors are PMC's and I use the LB1 signatures. However my mate is running the Quad electrostatic monitors, but he's a restoration engineer and so I've never heard a vast variety of music through them as he's very protective. I'd like to try them though.
I picked up a pair of AKG k44 headphones at the guitar center during their after Christmas sale for $40. They usually cost around $80. These are not top of the line but are really good. The next step up in quality will cost you $150-200. You can do a lot with these. There are certian aspects to mixing in a room that has been set up with proper acoustic design that can not be done with headphones. However, I've read about software that attempts to simulate what it sounds like in a mixing room.
@greagandev i've heard the K44's and they are absolutely terrible IMO. Even the Superlux HD668b's will sound way better than those. Try those superluxes out, you may be surprised.
hey...are studio headphones good? im new to music production and i dont really wanna spend a lot money for monitor speakers...so are there any good monitor/studio headphones out there?
@person who made this video, i have got my Wharfedales now and they sound truly amazingly good, lots of bass and good quality mid and high. I don't think i understand what flat freq. response means as my Wharfedales sound what i would imagine would be in a studio but you say the probably don't have the flat freq. response. Could you explain what that means.
You should probably research these things (you have the internet, go do it) before dropping lots of cash on speakers specifically designed for reference monitoring, otherwise you're shopping blind. "Imagining" that they sound right doesn't make it correct.
Wharfedale are consumer speakers made for listening, and "sweeten" the sound considerably to make everything sound great. They are NOT professional speakers made for mixing. Use Google and get more info!
@TheXtremesoundz flat frequency response = lows, mids and highs are all on the same level. Hifi-speakers may boost some frequencies, such as lows (bass) to give the speaker more "impressive" sound. Studio monitors are not made to impress the listener, but to tell you accurately what's going on with the mix.. That's what I've read, someone correct me if im wrong..
not to be a bitch, but i can't afford any of that! i create beats with a shitty pair of 10$ headphones and a crusty old laptop. you gotta start somewhere i guess . . . .
Also, I've seen some people using monitors (specifically the KRKs) while DJing small party's. Would the Yamaha HS80 be able to handle a small house party or would they sound too flat?
Love your videos, finally a place to get some good studio gear reviews! I'm on the edge about the Yamaha HS80's, how do you feel about them? I've heard the Yamaha HS models don't have great lows, but with 8inch woofer how can they not?
@TheXtremesoundz I am pretty sure that the Wharfedale's arent "studio monitors". Meaning they still color the sound significantly and they dont provide a flat frequency response. If you are looking for a lower priced speaker designed to give a flat frequency response for mixing, you would be better off maybe getting a pair of KRK Rokit's. I have a pair of the Rokit 5's and I would recommend them as they are the best sounding monitors I have ever used in their price range.
the adam avenged sevenfold. ha! i hope i'm not the only person who caught that. but in all seriousness, this has been a very helpful video for me. thanks for posting it!
One thing of note about the HS80m's - while they're very clear, they do have a slight tendency to color the mix in the low and low-mid range; their low end response is also not very good under 70hz (even though they have a measured a response as low as 42hz, it's at -10dB), so while I love them, I would recommend pairing them with the HS10w subwoofer, or something equivalent, especially if you plan on doing anything with a deep low end. You can find them for 650/pair with a pricematch at GC.
Ello , I have 2 rokits KRK's they are 5s and I was looking at the "Fostex" pair price is 199.....I went to guitarcenter's website and 1 krk is 1 sixty somthing a piece...I think this is a good price for a pair...but I'm not sure....My speakers have been good but I want better....those Fosteks were on ebay "NEW" for 199 a Pair...is it a good price???!?....if so I might change...THanks
Pro-tip, always make sure you find websites to price match against GC; guitar center, while I don't always recommend them, will do price matches against ebay stores (not regular sellers), and online retailers. Look at websites like djdeals, zzounds, bhphotovideo, audiomidi, music123, etc. I did an extended google search for my pair of hs80m's and managed to shave 250 off of GC's total price, as they not only price match, but will do an additional 10% of the difference.
I wouldn't recommend it, but it depends on what style of music you're aiming for. If you're doing electronic music, hip hop or anything that involves bass lower than 60hz, the hs10 or a similar monitor will be necessary for your sub-bass/subsonic ranges. The 50s/80s simply do not have enough in the ultra-low range to properly hear what is going on in your mix.
@theinfinitemouth Thanks for answering. I've decided i dont have money to be spending on the yamahas and a sub woofer. So i came down to the Behringers or Fostex in this video. I will be producing Hip Hop music. Which would you recommend? Fostex or Behringer?
@LiveLimitlessTv I have the same behringer's but it's not good. That's good but, not for making hip hop beat. i'm a starter beatmakin hip hop and there's is no basses on that one. You need a subwoofer for with those one. but i heard the Krk rp5 rokit g2 is good and you don't need a subwoofer. But i'm not sure
I have no experience with them. My experience is limited to a select few brands I've heard in studios and those I've used, including Adam and Genelec (studios), KRK (friends), and Yamahas (my own). I don't mind the sound of the KRK's, even if they are slightly colored, I love my Yamaha's, even though they have poor bass response, and anything I've heard by Adam and Genelec sounds amazing, but they should considering their price.
Well, scratch that - I have heard the M Audio monitors - at Guitar Center. However, not being in a proper environment, I couldn't get a good handle on them. They sounded rather thin to me if I remember correctly. I would honestly suggest that, if at all possible, you go to a major music store and see if they will
Are you saying then that 8" speakers are bad in a small room regardless... what happens if someone with a small room wants to mix dance music?

@EricShookRools Dude, listen, the producer I work with, has the NS10s for almost 30 years, and they are still great. After we make the mastering,we always check on the NS10.if the mix sounds great on these, then definetely sounds great everywhere. It's easier to implement the electromagnetic induction to make transducer work, cos the the sound is captured in 1 dimensional medium, but the problem is when sound propagates in 3 dimensions,&here the pure sound representation is so handy

InstantUsername 2 weeks ago
@InstantUsername Hiss isn't supposed to be there, but even in ideal situations it's still there at high enough volumes. First make sure you are using balanced connections with no frayed wires. Then make sure that speaker cable lines are not parallel with power lines. Lastly, make sure you get a good power conditioner for your speaker amps. That should help reduce it, but depending on the speaker even the internal components of the speaker can cause that hiss.

@InstantUsername what's a hiss sound like?

how come you didnt do a review with maudio bx8 can you explain why have have a constant hissing noise theres are 500 dollar studio monitors and there brand new and hiss but everyone who own a pair said they are doing this
Pvtchrislee07 2 weeks ago
@Pvtchrislee07 That's just the amplifier, it's present in all BX8s, dealwithit.jpg.

@BreanMate dont be rude what the fuck do u mean deal with it guy that 500 bucks its fucking annoying
Pvtchrislee07 2 weeks ago
@Pvtchrislee07 Alright, I'll reiterate, swap out your monitors for some other ones if you can, the BX8s are infamous for the hiss, I'd assume it's the amp being a bitch.
BreanMate 2 weeks ago
@Pvtchrislee07 I have a pair of BX8 D2s. This hiss you are experiencing is NOT the amplifiers. You have a ground loop. Go buy yourself a Behringer hum destroyer for £20 or so it will get rid of the hiss. It won't get rid of the low hum sound that the speakers themselves make but when sound is coming out of these speakers you will not hear this low hum.

@dkyx Me too. I have recently been thinking about maybe going to krk's or behringer as an additional ref monitor since the wife has me on an audio budget.
budman6565 2 weeks ago

However, I've read about software that attempts to simulate what it sounds like in a mixing room.
greagandev 3 weeks ago
@greagandev i've heard the K44's and they are absolutely terrible IMO. Even the Superlux HD668b's will sound way better than those. Try those superluxes out, you may be surprised.

TheXtremesoundz 3 weeks ago
@TheXtremesoundz
Use Google and get more info!
xXNickPXx 3 weeks ago
@TheXtremesoundz flat frequency response = lows, mids and highs are all on the same level. Hifi-speakers may boost some frequencies, such as lows (bass) to give the speaker more "impressive" sound. Studio monitors are not made to impress the listener, but to tell you accurately what's going on with the mix.. That's what I've read, someone correct me if im wrong..

I have just got Wharfedale diamond 7.1 speakers, would you call them studio monitors as the look like the speakers in your video.
TheXtremesoundz 3 weeks ago
@TheXtremesoundz I am pretty sure that the Wharfedale's arent "studio monitors". Meaning they still color the sound significantly and they dont provide a flat frequency response. If you are looking for a lower priced speaker designed to give a flat frequency response for mixing, you would be better off maybe getting a pair of KRK Rokit's. I have a pair of the Rokit 5's and I would recommend them as they are the best sounding monitors I have ever used in their price range.

@altron64 The better surround systems will have an options setting that lets you set them to a flat frequency response.

You can find them for 650/pair with a pricematch at GC.

betatestersrule08 1 month ago
@betatestersrule08

So would it be bad idea to get the Hs50s without the Hs10?
LiveLimitlessTv 1 month ago
@LiveLimitlessTv
I wouldn't recommend it, but it depends on what style of music you're aiming for. If you're doing electronic music, hip hop or anything that involves bass lower than 60hz, the hs10 or a similar monitor will be necessary for your sub-bass/subsonic ranges. The 50s/80s simply do not have enough in the ultra-low range to properly hear what is going on in your mix.
theinfinitemouth 1 month ago
@theinfinitemouth Thanks for answering. I've decided i dont have money to be spending on the yamahas and a sub woofer. So i came down to the Behringers or Fostex in this video. I will be producing Hip Hop music. Which would you recommend? Fostex or Behringer?
LiveLimitlessTv 1 month ago
@LiveLimitlessTv I have the same behringer's but it's not good. That's good but, not for making hip hop beat. i'm a starter beatmakin hip hop and there's is no basses on that one. @LiveLimitlessTv
I have no experience with them. My experience is limited to a select few brands I've heard in studios and those I've used, including Adam and Genelec (studios), KRK (friends), and Yamahas (my own). I don't mind the sound of the KRK's, even if they are slightly colored, I love my Yamaha's, even though they have poor bass response, and anything I've heard by Adam and Genelec sounds amazing, but they should considering their price.
theinfinitemouth 1 month ago
@LiveLimitlessTv
Well, scratch that - I have heard the M Audio monitors - at Guitar Center. However, not being in a proper environment, I couldn't get a good handle on them. They sounded rather thin to me if I remember correctly. I would honestly suggest that, if at all possible, you go to a major music store and see if they will
