It originated like that because women took care of the children in the old days and children were the #1 priority, so women had to go with them to take care of them. These days, though, men can take care of children too so that double standard is rather absurd now.
They used to believe that in the past because they thought that men were more capable of getting themselves to safety and the women needed help and protection.
