They both look like hens to me boss. We had Chickens for a few years but eventually the hawks and fox's killed'em all! We used to let them roam free around the property which was about 26 acres they never went to far and would come to you when you called them in the evening as long as you had food lol
grub activity slowed down so much due to the cold that I couldn't put any more food scraps in there. The bin wasn't bad for a first prototype, but it had some kinks i needed to work out, so I went ahead and scrapped that bin and just dumped the compost/grubs into my regular compost pile. I'm going to redesign and rebuild a better bin and restart it in the spring. I'll make videos on the new bin.
@thelordhumungus i just looked up what raccoon means because I wasn't sure.... Don't be scared of raccoons because from what I know they are really strong and that wire will not stop them also not the wire on the sides. Only thing that really works is to lock them up during the night. Have you ever considered rabbits for meat?
They are nice looking, my guess is hens but just a guess, they are still a little young to know for sure. I have had roosters younger than that start to crow, it is so cute. Good job on the coop. They will be happier when you make the run without the wire on the ground.
Wait and see if they lay eggs. . .egg = hen. How do apocalypse chickens differ from normal chickens?? Are they flame retardant or bullet proof?? Asbestos feathers??
great looking coop. I live in an apartment. I have no chickens. I am saving a few wire dog crates as part of my prep, I will have to trade for some chickens later, but I do have some mobile pens ready.
I am making them a run that won't have anything in on the bottom. There are a lot of racoons and other things in this area and I want them to be safe at night.
well i just hatched out 6 new baby chicks they started hatching out on the 31st and the first they werent to be hatching till today or tomarrow so i got a 50% hatch on this batch so far ive got 9 hens laying between 7 and 9 eggs a day and now these baby chicks should be ready to lay by july my goal is to hatch out a batch of chicks a month to have 28 hens and 3 roosters for a total of 30 chicksif it gets bad at least i have eggs and chickens to eat lol
for 1 person 2 hens is enough my chickens lay pretty well14 eggs a week and havnt stop laying even though its January i feed them chicken feed en table scraps also i let em roam free in my backyard they love to dig for worms and snails cats are no problem cuz one of my chicken thinks she is a roaster and runs after the cats picking at them actually kinda funny to see
Next time you buy feed, buy some oyster shells and laying pellets, the pellets are basically the food for hens and the shells make the egg shells stronger

From my chick experiences, the first thing that gives away the sex is the red thing grows out from the chin.

Dude... Remove the wire from the bottom... They won't get out and nothing will get inside... Let them be chickens and scratch around
