I totally agree with HardAsRock222's description of the epic album. I recall listening to it over and over on my parents stereo. I'm 55 and still love this stuff. Vol 4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath also in top ten... Fond times.
this would go down as probably one of my top ten songs of all time if the song had of continued on to the end as it started. heavy, methodic, psychodelic etc. 3:37 kills it for me. it's like it combined two even three different songs into one and the second and third songs don't even come close to the shivers you get from the first. it's still on of my favs of all time just not the entire song.
i love black sabbath, lol i grew up listening to it. My dad always had it playing in the car everywhere we went. My favorite childhood song was Am i going insane- Black Sabbath
@willbond i love finding a song i missed for whatever reason. gives me one more song to listen to that's better than 99% of the crap released today. i play t.rex "jewel" once in a while and still people say to me "what the hell is this song? this rocks"
Sabbaths first 6 albums are probably the best first 6 albums any band has ever released. I mean, they are better than Zeppelins first 6 albums. That's how good they are.
the kind of fearless experimentation Black Sabbath indulged in on this album (and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath) is fantastic. it would be nice to see them take creative risks like this on the Rubin-produced album due out in 2012, but more likely, he'll steer them toward a stripped-down, Master of Reality type of sound. which wouldn't suck, either.
Ozzy is the man and Black Sabbath was my main band of the 60's and 70's. What else can I say, the #1 band for rock in my book, forever! And I should know, I'm GRANDPA ROCK!!!
Black Sabbath, shy away from this album. This was supposedly the start of Tony's studio obsession with albums, but in contrasts...this album goes down as being (for me) one of the most well produced and recorded albums I've ever heard. The lyrics are so meaningful, the music is so diverse, the arrangements and movements are so unique from that of the typical "rock" genera. This album was in no way dumbed down in order to be "great", remembered, or to be a top seller.
Totally agree with you. This album is a work of art from top to bottom. You dont find many albums nowadays that have such the range contained in this masterpiece.
@HardAsARock222 ...agreed...well said . zepplin had the same formula ...tony saw that and he knew if the band wanted to be in the top five they needed to be diverse and unique...in the late 60's and early 70's there was no such thing as f.m. radio just a.m. radio meaning all songs had a time limit and had to be user friendly...when f.m. came out in 74 that format changed and good and exotic music filled the air...sabbath and zepplin took advantage of that.
A couple of months ago my friend and I had a ridiculous amount of shrooms. We tripped absolute balls. Most of the night was spent listening to this album (and being scared fucking shitless of the cover.)
Listen to me, while I sing this song, you might just think the words are wrong, too many people advising me, but they don't know what my eyes see, but everything is gonna work out fine yah, if they don't I feel I'll blow my mind yah! Fucking awesome song. Ozzy knows how to write some fucking awesome lyrics and Iommi is the greatest guitarist ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I honestly think that this is the best album to come out of the 70s. Seriously, I haven't heard anything better. Black sabbath deserves to be better selling than Led Zeppelin.
When I was small - I remember listening to Paranoid and Iron Man on my buddy's older sister's 8 Track. They were on some kinda K-Tel collection. But when I was 10 or so I started listening to KISS in pre-adolscent rebellion. I thought I was pretty cool. When I turned 13 a friend lent me this album. No other album has compared since . . . for me anyways . . . .
I am 52 years old and have in bands for years. I still am in awe of this tune everytime I hear this! Sabbath I dont really pay much attention to the cover, just the tunes.
I'm 54 yrs old and have listened to Sabbath for years. Ozzy and crew rock, period. Best metal band all around period. When it comes to music and lyrics, they cannot be beat. AC/DC is a close second.
I remember this way back when it was invented !no one else liked it much but ,I still love the old sabbath deep heavy rock for its time ,still better than any thing out there today !!!
@TheStormman95 i intruduced black sabbath to myself and i love it exacly the same if not more then when i was 14,,its great ,this song here is my most favorite it just kicks ass,,
Heavy chords and Ozzy with his high pitch. That man has a voice like no other. They are truly the fathers of metal. I am 19, but my uncle was lucky enough to see them once when he was a kid. Nothing will sound quite like this ever again.
I am offended by the comments to mine. I was trying to help your souls but you spit in my face. Now the devil has you right where he wants you and you are burning.
You can hear the beginning of Ozzy's solo career here. He wrote these lyrics, and starting getting better at phrasing and incorporating more melody, especially at the end of the song.
