A little background, I was a student at NYU's ITP when I built this piece. It was a prototype controlled by an arduino duemilanove which drives 25 bipolar stepper motors through shift registers. However, if you need to control a big wall full of pixels, this solution will not scale. Very difficult to manage all the wires and connections. Hope this helps. Drop me line if you need more info.

Im working in a proyect and I have to make something like this. A big wall of wooden dynamic pixels to make proyections over there...
