There's no real definition of emo music. Most bands that are classed as "emo" (Muse, Jimmy Eat World, etc) were originally under the heading of "Alternative Rock". The problem with Alternative Rock is that it's such a vague term that they can't really classify as anything. So pretty much anyone who wore black and dyed their hair black and thought any band known as alternative were good just decided to throw an emo tag on them. Hence why Muse and Jimmy Eat World really shouldn't be counted as emo

You can pretty much call emo anything thats members under 25, has the depth of a puddle and wears skinny jeans (All Time Low, YM@6, Go:Audio etc.), thats also why bands like Tokio Hotel should not be called emo. It used to be for deep lyrics, now its appearance and shittily put together computer beats (Metro Station)
