To be honest, this series desperately needs a film. Easy premise - all of the episodes are self contained stories revolving around various characters. What if each character was beginning to be consumed by their own stories of despair, and vanishing from the real world, and Nozomu had to rescue each while slowly working out his own despairs, only to discover that all of the events are caused by the sudden and final revelation of Kafuka's personal horror that is finally breaking her facade.

For those of you who say you can tell by the art style, all of this opening is taken from official openings and episodes.

Go watch the other openings, including the OVAs, and you'll spot most of this opening in its original form without too much trouble.

Yep, it takes the last song from the first season OP in the Zetsubou series and takes the opening cards from the initial episodes of the Zoku season in the beginning of this fan made OP. The girls' faces with the numbers on them were fan made for this OP, there's also some stock footage from the show inserted into this OP (like with Zetsubou running towards the screen.) If you watched all the seasons you would know which scenes are used in this OP.

No, the joke is that Itoshiki Nozomu's name is written vertically in kanji, it says Itoshiki Nozomu, however, when you write it vertically it literally looks somewhat similar to 絶望 which means "despair". Thus, when you look at his name vertically, it's Itoshiki Nozomu sensei, but horizontally, it'll be Zetsubou sensei = Mr. Despair. It's more of a pun.

What are you talking about? People are saying that this show is called "Mr. Despair" because Nozomu is trying to commit suicide. I'm telling, it's called "Sayounara Zetsubou Sensei" because it's a pun on his name, which when the first 2 characters that make up "Itoshiki" are combine together, it becomes "Zetsu". And his given name, "Nozomu" can be read as "bou". hence, Zetsubou. The same case with his brother which his given name can be read as "me" Hence, Zetsume
