Most of the people hating on Seether are probably under 20 years old. Which means you weren't even big enough to witness Nirvana when it was starting out. Nirvana is good, but they aren't godlike by any means. They wouldn't be half as famous today if Kurt hadn't killed himself. They'd would probably just be a washed up band from the 90s. There is nothing wrong with covering a song from your one of your favorite bands, it's not better than Nirvana's version and it's not trying to be.

However, the ones I have heard have all used the same old recycled "Nirvana" chords (namely E5, A5, and D5; all powerchords mind you), in addition to some "grunge" raspy vocals occasionally wondering into a sloppy scream which just has "Kurt Cobain wannabe" written all over it. Not to mention the fact that the lead singer is quite obviously trying to emulate Cobain's appearance and even mannerisms.

Seether and Nirvana have some very different guitar methods for one thing. I don't think Shawn sounds like Kurt either EXCEPT for when he covers Nirvana songs. The screaming he incorporates is not very Nirvana-esque, and he has more control than Kurt (not insulting Kurt's vocals, cause their flaws were equally cool).
