Gotta love how some Asians actually adopt the culture of the country they live in. Not. Vancouver has a big problem with this as well...I believe if you move to a country, you should learn the language/customs of that country. If I moved to China, I would learn Mandarin or Cantonese and eat their food etc etc. It's only polite.

@bbang1989 Parts of Vancouver are at least 50% Asian (specifically, immigrants from Hong Kong.) Many of them do not speak English (or French, which is the other official language of my homeland.) There are numerous groups of immigrants though, everthing from Brazilians to Indians (people from India.) Some of the immigrants more-or-less assimilate but by and large, the Hong Kong/Taiwan/etc people are very racist against anyone who is not Chinese/Taiwanese.

Asian-American does not equal Chinese; there are almost as many Filipinos in the US as Chinese; there are very few 'Little Manilas' across the US because Filipinos assimilated into American society and moved to the suburbs decades ago!

D.C.'s Chinatown is a Disney-like facade and NYC has multiple Chinatowns. Also, nobody mentions that a lot of the newer, younger Chinese immigrants are from the mainland, speak Mandarin and maybe had some English in school. This is in contrast to the people you'd find in many older American Chinatowns, who speak primarily Cantonese or another dialect.

Chinese are like the Jews or Italian immigrants of the 20th century. They settled into homogeneous communities where they could make a life, but made sure their children integrated socially, becoming doctors, lawyers and other professionals. Chinese immigrant descendants will help define mainstream American culture in the near future. This story isn't really about the disappearing Chinatown, but about the merging of Chinese and American cultures. (p.s. the cat at the end is Japanese, oops).

How is this surprising? All the cities' downtown areas in the US are now the ghetto. LA, SF, NY, DC, Chicago... All you see are the homeless and crack addicts hanging around. Throw in the occasional office worker who rushes back to the suburbs after work and that completes the whole downtown experience all around the US.
