Also, to expand on this you can also use a door as an alternative to sign posts and by using a little bit of redstone wiring you can make the door open and close using a secret lever [You can't open the door through the painting].

on multiplayer i just walked in someones house and he said hello and i said hi and i said can i look around he said ok there a painting i hit by acsedent and there was a door and then he killed me with arrows and a bow

@KatzOhki The painting one doesn't, you need a door in the open space for it to work though. The lava minecart one still works as far as i know. but now with piston doors, idk why you'd ever want anything else :P

the second method is good for enemy stalkers/intruders they would be like

The painting one doesnt work for me, after removing 2 blocks the painting falls off.
