From my short time working at the shittiest job I've ever had, and I've had crap jobs, is that it is not a 'restaurant' but merely a giant microwave. Nothing is cooked fresh, just heated up. Thank God it's a temporary job!

But, i do have the utmost respect for everyone who works in McD's as it is a tough job with little room for error.

Try doing this ask the person on table to show you and if they aren't assholes they most likely will allow you and teach you how to make a few sandwiches. I now go on table on the afternoons with no permission and my manager hasn't said anything yet so you can try to too. Good luck!
