this gave me cold chills. one of my favorite memories of my childhood is hearing this sung by the old men, tenors mostly, from the little farm town were i was raised.
I come back all the time, over a year now. I am seeing the Kruger Brothers play next month. I will tell them this needs to be on a CD. The BEST version out there by far!
@PFCBeetleBailey Funny you should ask! Last Saturday night I saw them at the Mountain Song Festival in Brevard, NC and guess what they did this song and MAYNARD showed up. to sing it!!! I was one of the few who got so excited to see Maynard! I don't think the others in the crowd knew this very special guest. What a treat, I was lucky to hear such a special song at a beautiful festival just down the road from where The Kruger Brothers Live!
Can't get enough of this version... I think I come by every day to hear this... what an incredible interpretation of this melody, as only the Kruger brothers can do.. This is my first time hearing Mr. Holbrook. He sounds like a wonderful mixture of Ralph Stanley and Sting. Want to hear more of this one..
I just saw them at Merlefest and now am a huge fan!
I told myself I was not going to try and perform this song myself for it is sooo depressing. Now that I see the Kruger Brothers do it ,I am doing it. I was able to speak to them for a minute and they are very nice people as well:)
one of my favourite youtube vids, his voice reminds me of ralph stanley.

I can't decide which is better. This version or Tim O'briens..... I'd say that sweet banjo is what tips the scales in favor of this one though! =D

Wow! It truly sounded like as if he did it himself and was remorseful about what he did. Played with the passion it was intended! Nice job!!
