I like so many versions of this song! But this is a cover of the Clash cover of the Vince Taylor classic original with some Setzer big swing orchestrations thrown in for good measure...which is pretty fricking cool. Nice shades, too.
I loved The Stray Cats back in the 1980s with Brian Setzer and I still love Brian Setzer Orchestra (I even bought some Benny Goodman Band music because Brian Setzer attributes him as an inspiration in his career!). This house band, it seems, does a great job with Brian Setzer. Love the Peter Gunn theme in the background!!!!! There seems to be electricity in the air whenever Brian Setzer rocks on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had been a stray cats fan and thought Brian had just fallen off the planet until I saw this Letterman. I was jumping up and down in my dorm room and bought the CD the next day. 12 years later i finally saqw him live when wife bought us tickets to the Christmas Extravaganza. You rock Brian, thanks!
Brian was so much better when he played with the Stray Cats. thier stuff was alot more Rockabily...and as for the song the bass needs to be more engergetic, preferably played on a double bass
the orginal of this song is vince talyor and the playboys not gene vincent or anyone else brian stezer has made an awsome copy of this i saw the stray cats in 2008 on my 16th bday in brixton what an ansome nite that was and i would like to see brian on his own as all the songs he does now
and if anyone dont like it dont listen because you sqaure
Bellgardens53.. Learn your classics! Vince Taylor was the first in a black leather suite. Later Vincent and even Elvis copied this from him! ( talking about copy cats!). By the way...vampiroangelico. The Clash stole this song from Vince Taylor who recorded this in the late 50 ties!
gene vincent wore the black leather in first during the boys meets girls tv show and at the paris olympia theater december 1959. Vince wore it in 1961 when he came to france./
I think you're wrong buddy...As far as I know Gene wore full leather in France in late 50's, but I'm not going to discuss about it because who wore it first doesn't mean a shit, the important thing is the music, isn't it?
I dug this one reall good. Vince Taylor or whatever his real name was, did one good record and it was this one. Otherwise he was...about zero to listen to compared with the real rockn'rollers. it was just looks n' nothing more...
I've waited too long too reply to all of you putting this video down. I saw the Stray Cats 3 times in the day. This is not the Stray Cats. I've played in rock bands, jazz ensembles and stage bands. I have the original Vince Taylor recording on disc and London Calling and these are all great. This is just another rendition of the song. This is not a rock band, it's a big band featuring a vocalist/guitarist. Have an open mind to music.
Ive got an open mind, I just choose not to accept this version. There are hundreds of renditions, and I appreciate an artist's take on doing covers, but the way I'd prefer music is with the mean nasty rude tone that is the streets. And this song could reflect that, or it could reflect like brian's version; don't get me wrong he is great, just this song sounds better on different versions i've heard. My comment was simply an observation, but his voice is annoying.
Actually V Taylor was just another copy cat. Seen him in that leather garnment and it look almost as bad as the ridiculous leather clothes Jack Good put on Gene Vincent in UK 59/60 to make him look 'dangerous'. And added a f.....g big medallion around his neck.
jt123eg...Ok you don't like it but this is great, very good and impressive and I also have heard "Gene and Eddie" several times and I put Eddie C at # 1 together w/Elvis of the '50s (before he became main, pyjama dressed)
I finally saw the Stray Cats last summer with ZZ TOP, & The Pretenders in Puyallup WA. We arrived late & missed most of their set. It would be great if they could combine The Cats & the Orchestra into one big revue!!!
Thanks much Daniel. I've always liked these big bands, used to play in the jazz ensemble in high school and played a few cool songs like "Night Train" and "The Stripper", but nothing as cool as this. Notice how the orchestra goes into "Peter Gunn" at 1:53. Saw This band in '94 and '95 at Milwaukee Summerfest and about 5 years ago at the Universal Amphitheater in L.A. for the Christmas show. They are so good live. Glad you liked it, quality not that good, it's from a VHS.
Damn fine music...we need more of this kind of talent...thanks for the post!

Oh wow! Thank you for the info!
I am going to play this song with my band and I definitely need to know the story behind it.
I am only 41 and I am not up to date on my '50s knowledge, so thank you!

It is the Peter Gunn Theme. Check out my videos, I play sax on the song with my old band.
