How does Robert still hold such awesome long notes/? Though he held prayers for rain yell best in Berlin live!!!! I share it w/ all my peeps! Long live The Cure. Plz tour U.S again, I have a blast every time they come!!! Even catching them in diverse Cities, yeah they're THAT GOOD!!!!!
You gotta admit, his drumming is pretty weak...as in...it actually sounds really weak!
Many cure songs require a powerful, striking drum, this song is no exception.
I wish cure fans would stop making excuses for bad musicianship. I personally wouldn't even want to go see any of their live shows today. Robert needs to clean himself up and get in shape, because his current state is obviously affecting his ability to perform and make judgements about his band.
@HuckMeHard hahaha, bad musicianship? Have you heard the early stuff? They actually had to teach Lol how to play drums so don't start with Coopers playing ability. The bottom line is no one will ever be what Boris was. Not only was he a fucking machine on drums but his playing style really helped create a lot of the "cure" sound of modern times. I've seen them live 3 times but not for about 10 years or so, honestly I woulnd't want to hear anything off the last 2 albums live.
They sound different live, even then, they sound different in every performance. But they never sound bad, if anything, they always sound better. It's truly fantastic how they can do that.
This is one of my very favorite song's from THE CURE it's so unreal music can be this good it can haunt your mind all day after you hear it.I know everyone loves this album and yeah it is a very exceptionally beautiful one however ,not my very fav but, I do soo still love it!!!!
This song is just so perfect!! The music, the lyrics, the haunting and mesmerizing feel that it gives you is just pure perfection! Love this song! Love this band!! Love Robert!! The Cure forever!! ♥
This song is so exceptionally beautiful!! I do so love the dark and haunting feeling it puts through your soul!! Disintegration is one true masterpiece of an album! There is no one like The Cure, no one!! And that is the way I love it to be!! :D I do so love The Cure!! <3
Years ago, if I was asked "which song would you like to have under your belt as a writer" "Stairway to Heaven" would come to mind. Years went by and one day, I bought "Disintegration". Everything changed from there. I've been listening to music for more than 40 years and must admit, there is no other song that captures my heart like "Prayers for rain. It possesses that magical vibe which seems impossible to duplicate.
Any of you think the Cure still have their best material ahead of them?
@croydonsbest Well, you have obviously never seen a beautiful tiger take a swim, they love the water, as I love Robert and The Cure!!!! Meeooww!!!!.....LOL!!!!
Getting back into The Cure after my late 80's listening. They're really good, maybe ahead of their time. Robert Smith got my respect then, and now - great artist.
Amazing what emotional response I always get from the tunes of this song and the desperate voices from Robert. Masterpiece !! It leads me to pictures from people who always keep on trying to get a fish in a tree and then complain about the unwilling fishes, its a tragedy !
The sound of the Cure is healing and hurting; it takes me away and it bringes me back, it makes me sad and bright, longing for those times which will never come back.
So your saying you can read bass tabs- if you have them, yet you can't pick this up by ear? I'm the complete opposite. I can ear and play just about any bass line out there( minus maybe most death metal stuff ), but good look luck if i could ever tab any if it hahaha!
@VirtageBass its really simple and sound as good on guitar as well as bass.......
open 2nd string, (2nd thickest) 3rd string 2nd fret, 2 x open 2nd string, 3rd string 2nd fret, open 2nd string, 2 x 2nd string 3rd fret, open 3rd string, open 4th string, open 3rd string.
Thats the basics but the more you play it, the more notes you can throw in. Try alternating the 2nd to last note on the 4th string to 2nd fret instead of open.
Wish I could explain easier but hope it works and you enjoy. Cure x
Nothing I have ever heard can approach the Cure,If God listened to music,Id bet he would have this CD in his private collection,I dont think the world knows just how one in a trillion this band really is,This is really a one of a kind band, that can never ever be bested through out all eternity.Nothing else even comes close to coming close.

This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I didn`t really like their last album that came out in 2008. I bought the CD, which had a really beautiful artwork by Porl Thompson, and the first track was good, but sounded too similar to another songs they`ve done before like Plainsong. The rest was really mediocre. a lot of old fans felt the same, so I was glad to know I wasn`t the only one. I threw the Cd in a trash, and I that tells a lot, cuz I`ve been a big Cure fan since I was 14. Now I`m 33, and I think this band should quit.
what they need is to get Boris back on the drums or Robert should really look for a real good drummer. Jason just doesn't feel right and his creativity is NULL!
Think they should quit because you didn't like one CD? Most bands have one CD that isn't as good as others. Doesn't mean that every other CD they create will have that same effect. Just depends on the listener, really.
I didnt think "Underneath the stars" was very similar to "plainsong". I can agree that the rest of the album was mediocre, but if they'd quit, there'd never be another Cure show, and to a 16 year old fan like myself, it would be a fate worse than death!
Don't worry I thought the same when I was 14 and then when I was 16, in 1996, they came out with Wild Mood Swings... And we heard the same things in the IRC chat rooms. I thought after Wish, they would never make another album, now I will be 30 in Feb. They will be around forever like the Rolling Stones. I waited and now Porl is back, well worth it. And even if they don't make another one, they will make live albums and do tours. so don't despair!
It`s good to know that most people agree with what I`ve always thought- Boris Williams was the best drummer for The Cure; Jason Cooper is the worst. His bad choice of the drum-kit, and he is not musical or creative as Boris was. Or maybe he belongs in a different genre. I don`t know what it is, but his drumming style annoys me, and it`s just this gut instinct that I`ve got. I still don`t know what makes some drummer great and others shitty. it just sounds off when Jason plays.
True,Boris was great, jason is just filling in,but the genius Robert Smith,is so good that he carries the band, and they still sound good, theyre the best Ive ever seen.I fully agree with you darioism76
watch him playing "To Wish impossible things" live in the Show VHS video and you will notice a little of what makes to be a good drummer. Boris is playing ALL the percussion sounds and doesnt' need the help of backing tapes that plays things for him.
I thought I was totally naive about what makes a good drummer, but it was after listening to Boris Williams play, that made me want to take up drums. It was discovering The Cure that made me want to learn the guitar, piano, bass and drums. I worshiped Porl Thompson, cuz he`s a multi-instrumentalist and also an artist. I wanted to be Porl when I grew up; but wanted to be Robert Smith when I was a teen
Why are you all whinging about the new band members? ROBERT SMITH IS THE CURE! he is the only one keeping them going - football teams lose their best players all the time and have to cope with it and bring in people who they hope are up to the job - stop whinging and support the guy who has stuck with the band through around 30 years who should be applauded for keping the band alive!!! Bloody whingers get a life!!!!!!!!!!
I hear all this criticism of Jason, but all this time I never agreed with it. In this song, he does kind of ruin the mood with those random cymbals. But for the most part, I think he's alright.
yes what a kind of crap here. As if it mathers wich drummer there is. The songs the style of the cure is brilliant . Go to school or to work a do som usefuls instead of bla bla bla bla. :)
the kiss me lp was great but yes dark and deep is better , any one whent to the nec birmingham the 2 dates Disintegration rob danced with me on the right of the stage
When they released Kiss me....I was not amused, but Disintegration restored some hope in their direction. I clearly enjoy the darker Cure offerings. Wonderful live band.
This song is pure divinity..there arent any words to explain it...sometimes people reach perfection..only a few times...this is one of that times...!!
I lost my CD with this song on it somewhere along the line, I think one of my ex-girlfriends stole it. Anyhow, the only way to get a replacement CD, is by special order. I used to JAM THIS SONG at like 800watts thru my quadraphonic audiophile system with sonic holography[Carver]. The neighors, be damned...
The Cure is one of my biggest favourite bands!!! Love them and Robert´s voice over all everything else! Please, please, please Robert - another tour. Haven´t seen you around here for a very long time, so please come to Scandinavia as soon as possible!
last time they performed live here in Athens, was in Spetember of 2005...they were amazing!! i ve been to many concertes, but this one, was far far faraway, the best i ve ever been..and they played 3,5 hours live, with 6 encores....amazing band...
I can't believe this sounds better live then in the album.... and neither could I believe this in my bread is not butter :-O

I'm 56 and I hope they don't.

what they need is to get Boris back on the drums or Robert should really look for a real good drummer. Jason just doesn't feel right and his creativity is NULL!

@darioism76
Think they should quit because you didn't like one CD? Most bands have one CD that isn't as good as others. Doesn't mean that every other CD they create will have that same effect. Just depends on the listener, really.
Anyway, this is a nice song.

I still don`t know what makes some drummer great and others shitty. it just sounds off when Jason plays.
darioism76 2 years ago

Geez, stop being so critical and just enjoy the song .

yes what a kind of crap here. As if it mathers wich drummer there is. The songs the style of the cure is brilliant . Go to school or to work a do som usefuls instead of bla bla bla bla. :)
petrusaloisius 1 year ago 3
jason really really fucks up the mood on this one. that large build up on the drums really is supposed to make this song so KABOOM.
dano555666 2 years ago
yep! jason is spoiling every fuc*king Cure classic!
his sound is so bad, his style is bad bad bad! just watch and hear how he plays the hi-hats, always half-open and trashy... sucks!
jason IS NOT a good drummer.
jason IS spoiling all Cure good songs
jason IS ruining all the good drum patterns created by Boris
jason lacks creativity
jason lacks musicianship
jason lacks good sound
and the list goes on and on...

When they released Kiss me....I was not amused, but Disintegration restored some hope in their direction. I clearly enjoy the darker Cure offerings. Wonderful live band.

You are missing out on Kiss Me, about half the songs on there are as good as anything they did at any time...as dark as Pronography...
