  • this is an adaptation of the successful broadway play. period was deliberately changed.

this is quite good, esp with regard to comedy

austen wrote comedies(or satires) of manners, not romance novels (as some ppl seem to believe).

it is not perfect. but no adaptation is perfect.

in fact one of the good things about this is it doesn't try hard to be like the book, and thus fail, like others.

    1979/80, 1995, also good.

2005(more like a bronte instead of austen) really bad.

  • that's SO not Mr.Darcy LOL

  • love the colin firth version so much but like all 3 actually- this one was good too

  • Well I was quite surprised at Lady Catherine's approval of Lizzy for sure. :)

  • i liked the 2005 version the best, the whole setting and cast was amazing, while this one does look american and not english. plus keria knightly looks beautiful and a great Elizabeth and mr darcy looks deadly gorgeous in every scene =)

  • @julian11gab yours criteria for judging adaptations of austen seems to be symptomatic of large number of self styled austen fans;

casting of attractive('deadly' romantic!)actors, romantic scenery and setting, what some ppl call (and far from real) english look and accents, etc etc

even though charlotte bronte is on record expressing her dislike of austen, with such judges,no wonder producers of 2005 version changed austen to a bronte. it included the very things she thought austen lacked

  • "do you know what ur saying" "yes im asking you to marry me"

geez that's like THE line (and body motion) they always use in movies of that time...very undarcy-like

  • Pathetic!

  • way tooo american:)))) and they don't follow the book closely. Jane Austen has such a great irony in her writing, that changing the novel's language makes the movie loose its charm. my opinion.

  • *cringe*

God, I love modern cinema. This kind of stuff is garbage.

  • and they had to wait till 1980 for another version to come out lol

  • @1kissbee I saw somewhere that there was a 1967 version...but I can't seem to find it. Maybe it was even worse than this...

  • @jame1881 right with peter crushing. i heard it was decent..

  • Ehm..too american :D

  • Their dresses are so big! Haha!

  • American made....need I say more....yuk !

  • haha, thats really funny to see such an old trailer

  • Even though this version doesn't go along well with the book, it's still awesome!!!

  • This is hysterical. Totally inaccurate in every aspect, as one may easily ascertain, but this is still amazingly cute.

  • @MazinaPictures I couldn't agree more...I love to watch this version, not because it is "P&P" but because it is adorably entertaining! (And who couldn't love Olivier and Garson?)

  • i love how the costumes are totally NOT appropriate to the time period, and the accents are all that very proper american english spoken in old movies. oh, and mr. darcy is way to romantic.

  • Costumes are WAY OFF. I love Olivier but woman playing Elizabeth Bennet sounds like her head's in the clouds.

  • omg its so old !!!i dont want to watch it !

  • haha their clothes. It's neither contemporary for the 40s or the novel! oy vey! lol

  • Ann Rutherford was Careen in Gone With the Wind! :)

  • i love all version of Pride And Prejudice

  • "An unhappy alternative is before you, Elizabeth. Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do."

Best line in the entire book (second only to "A little touch of Harry in the night" for best line in the entire English language), and officially puts Mr. Bennet in the forefront of the "coolest literary dad ever" competition!

  • This is the best version ever!

No other Mr. Darcy was more overbearing than Sir Laurance Olivier.

    And Lady Catherine is marvellous!

  • The costumes do not please me at all! They are not like I imagine they dressed on Austens time. I like the more contemporary movies based on Austens books. They are more elegant - visually and psychologically. But I just have to check this version out, my goal is to read and watch everything Austen. :-)

  • Hahah they make Mr. Darcy so romantic lol.

  • the costumes, dances, and ages of actors notwithstanding, this is by FAR my favorite version of P&P. i don't think there has ever been a better mrs. bennett than mary boland, or a better mr. bennett than edmund gwenn. that's not to mention those playing mr. collins, lady catherine, lydia, and even mary. and of course no one, not even comes colin firth, can touch the sexiness of laurence olivier as darcy :D p.s. greer garson = class

  • I LOVE THIS OMGGGGG

  • wow mr. darcy is very good looking

  • YES? NO? PERHAPS? xD

  • it looks so funny and sort of out of time because of the clothes, too american and gone-with-the wind like.

1995 is surely the best version :)

  • yeah, the costumes were like 40 years too competorary, but there seems to have been a lot of historical inaccuracies in movies back then.

  • @ch1he1sen the 1995 one is my 2nd fav, after the 2005, but I totally love this one, its just hilarious!

  • @ch1he1sen the outfits were actually reused from gone with the wind

  • @ch1he1sen

    the best version is 2005

  • @ch1he1sen 2005 is surely the best version. :D

  • What a lovely, funny and light version of pride and prejudice..I liked it. I laught a lot.

Laurence is great as mr. darcy and Greer is absolutly wonderful.:-)

  • lol the cute thing is that they got everything wrong, from the dresses to the dancing. Just everything. :-D

  • omg...this is not pride and prejudice at all...especially elizabeth and mr. darcy...-.-

  • This was a very amusing film but a prefer the 1995 version. :)

  • wow!!

  • greer garson is the MOST BEAUTiFUL lizzy bennet among all lizzy bennets. :) keira is the 2nd & the 3rd is jennifer ehle, though i prefer jennifer ehle's acting skills. :)

  • I agree with you. In this version, I can totally understand why Mr. Bennett can be so indifferent to his family. What a beautiful bunch of daughters he has in this house. Even Mary with glasses is much prettier than in the other versions.

  • thank you. :D though i haven't watched this version yet, i'm DYiNG to watch it now. ;]

  • what a glorious trailer!!!

  • oh my, what is goin on with those dresses?!

  • Laurence Olivier is my favorite Mr. Darcy. He's oh so dreamy :) Matthew Mcfadyen isn't that dreadful to look at either. haha. I love these movies

  • Colin Firth is good too.:-)

  • Im a huge Matthew McFaden..Mr. Darcy fan...but Colin Firth is a strong 2nd!

  • omg i loved this version! it was really good :) the mom is just so much more entertaining shes so dramatic. i really like the newer version aswell. but laurence oliver is such a swell mr.darcy

  • I know! I loved Greer as Elizabeth. I wish someone would put this entire version up. It was up before, but it got taken down for who knows what reason.

  • This movie was shown last night on TCM for their salute to the films of the beautiful Greer Garson.

  • Oh my goodness her big sleeves and sometimes her hair is ridiculous but I like how Mr. Bennet says his line about how he will never see her if she marries Mr. Collins.

  • This movie in this version 1940 comes on Tuesday at 10:40 in the morning I think but I know for sure it is 10:40! I love the 2005 version be the first for me with this version.

  • I LOVE this movie! Garson & Olivier, made my day.

And the cast was sparkling funny.

    Thank:)!

  • What a memorable cast. Garson and Olivier are perfect together.

  • Actually i ve never seen this version before was it the first of P and P.

i think it s the funniest version, the cast seem gorgeouse.

    thanx for sharin

  • Thanks for sharing.

  • wow. just... wow. they give away the whole plot in the trailer! just... wow, lol!

  • greer garson is SO SO SO SO beautiful !

  • greer garson is SO SO SO SO beautiful !

  • Anyone think that 'Marsha hunt' looks a bit like the girl who plays Jan Brady in the Brady Bunch movies?

  • OMG! She does! I've seen this movie dozens of times and I never noticed it!

  • I agree

  • I used to want to see this, now I kinda don't. What's up with it not being set in Regency?

  • I've lost count of the times I've seen P & P in over the past 35 yrs. Surely this has to be one of the best ensemble casts in cinema history. Greer and Olivier are marvelous..but I have a special soft spot for the wonderful Edna Mae Oliver. Thanks for sharing this trailer (which I'd never seen before).

  • is it just me or is Mr.Darcy WAYYY to gentle-men like?

he's supposed to be very proud!

    its still good though :)

  • This version was super-cute, but WHY oh why did they feel the need to mess with Lady Catherine's behavior at the end?

  • gosh,this movie makes me mushy all over...just love greer...ahem...such a woman.n the chem,she n olivier had is so good...real P&P stuff..nothing beats it..

  • I prefer this 'vintage' version to the one which has been released recently.

  • waw its beautiful

  • hate the kiss!

  • It was on TV today on TCM. 7/21/07

  • I wish and i wish somebody would upload this movie
