  • "for part 2 of this exciting video" ?????? are you on glue!!! fuck me i have a lot of pedals but for someone starting out "on a budget" this is no help whatsoever you gimp! all the gear there will set you back roughly £300-£400!! go back to your bedroom and never come out please

  • No chorus effect in this song but it's in Come As You Are.

  • @Johnmcartney10 there is chorus in the verse :L

  • i just had 2 sign in to say this, ON A BUDGET MY ASSHOLE

  • Comment removed

  • one way, i guess. perhaps putting it all together may have convinced some

  • are you kidding right?

  • So, actually using 1000 pedal effects than two is a budget way of getting the sound?

  • Kurt actually put his DS-1 or DS-2 before his Sans Amp pedal. This produces a very compressed, grungy sounding distortion. The signal then went into whatever amp he was using, which was usually a Fender twin in the studio or a Mesa/Boogie preamp and a Crown power amp live.

  • "This is not a very expensive pedal, you can get a more expensive one as well, they're all kind of similar."

I stopped listening after this intelligent opinion.

  • how is this on a budget -.-

  • I used Korg ax3g , sounded cool and in budget :)

  • for information on any gear kurt used from his own guitar techs search for "kurts equipment faq". perhaps, a small clone chorus and a ds-1 will do the work.

  • Here's how you get a Kurt Cobain sound:

    1. Buy a DS-1 and a Fender anything.

    2. Crank the DS-1's Distortion and Level.

3, Turn your amp up to 12.

    4. Just don't give a fuck.

  • @RandomStevie And an Electro Harmonix Small Clone chorus :)

  • @RandomStevie that sir is very true!!! do people really think kurt cobain did this hahaha. he didnt give a fuck and alot of time used really cheap guitars.

  • @RandomStevie Why a DS-1? Is it a good pedal or something?

  • @Gamemaniacization Not only is it a good pedal, it is THE pedal Kurt used.

  • @RandomStevie actually, kurt was known to use a big muff and a proco rat (2). cheers!

  • @heartwarmingkiller he has used both a Big Muff and a RAT but he usee a modded DS-1 for most of his carrer and then changed to a DS-2 around the time of In Utero

  • sERIOUSLY? hows about buy a fender mustang a boss ds1 ?

  • Just get a ds-1 and a small clone or neo clone and there you go!

  • @ossikater dont do that, neo clone sucks! one of the worst popular pedals ever made. on the other hand, small clone is one of the best chorus pedals ever.

  • @renantsm You do know the neo clone is exactly the same pedal as the small clone, just a different package, right?

  • @jessemaes1990 Not exactly, same circuit, not the same parts. Its a recreation. In spite of being a big fan of kurts sound, im also a big fan of chorus pedals. Ive owned the neo and the nano clone and its just not the same as the small clone. its only an emulation of the small clone. The nano is just not good and the neo is passable.

  • Noooo Kurt loved marshalls

  • @Thisismusic1969 yea man he couldnt stand marshalls, always covered up the logo on his cabs

  • @Thisismusic1969 hated them for sure.

  • To get the kurt cobain smells like teen spirit sound you need one mesa boogie one fender bassman one special (non-fabric) made grunge pedal (for the chorus section) that you can't get because it belongs to kurt (courtney) and one MXR micro Chorus for the verse/rythm/pre-chorus(hello,howlow) section.

  • Digitech grunge pedal any good?

  • @slipknotmetalica2398 the grunge pedal is shit. you're better off getting a DS-1, turning Level all the way up, putting Tone around 11 o'clock and putting the Distortion in between 11 o'clock and 12 o'clock.

  • Kurt fucking HATED marshalls.

  • @kungfucowofgooeynes He used Marshall cabinets, but took off, or put tape over, the Marshall logo.

  • this is not the "Kurt Cobain" sound....this is smells like teen spirit sound.

  • @massmayemproductions It's more like the Butch Vig sound lol

  • Thnx it really helped a lot

  • DS-1 with a EHX small clone

  • @1newbucketheadcover1 EHX small clone chorus :)

  • Or you could just buy a DS-1 for 25 bucks...

  • WTF! why not just spend 40 squid on a DS1 and a chorus off ebay? and get his exact sound...why use all these pedals that will cost more? strange video....very strange...are you a shareholder of that unbranded pedal manufacturer or something?

  • @KontingencyPlan

lol squid i use the same term

  • freak u.u sorry dude, ds 1 or ds2 and small clone chorus... only this :S

  • After all these settings on amp and pedals, you could at least show the end result like actually play the song.

  • all u need is a boss ds-1/ds-2 (I prefer ds-2) and an electro harmonix small clone and just turnb the bass down on ur amp and the treble up, mids down and a bit of reverb. not 4 fuckin distortion pedals!

  • You forgot the delay, phaser, and the piano!!

  • Get the Ds-2 Kurt used that on In Utero and on Live at paramount.. Imo In utero sounds better... just get an dimarizio super distortion pickup

  • Alternative to this guy's idea - Get DS1 and CE5 pedals and a decent amp. Rather than spending £400 on pedals. XD I know for sure that Kurt used a DS1.

  • Y'know, Kurt got Kurt's "sound on a budget" by just using his own cheap equipment. Artofmixing spends almost 5 minutes convincing us to use the wrong equipment to get the right tone. I guess that's why this wanktastic knob twiddler is making YouTube vids instead of hit records. You'll get a lot further using your own ears instead of this misguided goon's guidance to find the tone you're looking for.

  • ....That was absolutely, dreadful. What about you, Randy?

  • So this is basically "getting a very bad version of the Kurt Cobain sound on 3 times Kurt Cobain's budget"?

  • the last two pedals is all you need to sound like kurt i dont get why this guy show all those other pedals :S

  • what have you been smoking ?

  • i have a cry baby pedal and i can get the same thing in the recording and in the song come as you are

  • metal

  • Kurt use the treble pickup on his Fender Mustang for the opening lead tone.

  • Boss DS-2 & EHX Small Clone Chorus. Together = £90-£120

  • You are wrong... Kurt used A Boss DS-2, a Small Chorus and a Sansamp GT !!!

Marshall Valve Amps ang Fender Guitar with Dimarzio Super Distortion Caps and 0.12.

  • this guy doesn't know a thing xD

  • lol, Kurt Cobain put all the settings at the max an rocks, this is the rock style

  • isn't the boss ds-1 like 40 bucks new? and 20 on craigslist?

  • If this is on a budget i wanna fuckin see what the one off the budget is?

  • all u need is a good sized amp, a boss ds2/ds1, an electro harmonix small clone and it doesnt matter really, kurt never has the same sound as the studio anyway.

  • Seriously?! low budget? an big ass marshal and 5 pedals?...

let me help you out: get a boss DS-2 turbo distortion, level: full, Tone: round 12/1 o'clock, Distortion: Full, Mode: 1.

Voila, perfect sound with same effect cobain used.

    problem?

  • boss ds2 and a dod chorus

  • what kinda of a fuckin budget are you on with a massive marshall amp and 5 different pedals for 1 tone???

  • @ThisIsTheEndgame i know just get a boss ds 2

  • yep, EH Small Clone + American amp is the key.

  • he sounds just like ashens

  • Comment removed

  • fkin fanboy

  • I just use my Boss DS-2(Level halfway, Tone 11 o' clock, Distortion up full & turbo off), me Boss CE-2 Chorus (Depth just backed off from half, and rate 2-3 o'clock) with my Vox AC-15(Normal Channel, Bass 9 o' clock, Treble 2 o' clock) & my Gibson Les Paul with Dimarzio pickups(PAF pro neck, & Super Distortion bridge).

  • On a budget? There are about 6 £100 pedals in there.

  • 1 amp + ds1 + 1 chorus pedal. Done

  • shit

    ..

  • all ive ever seen kurt use was a boss ds1 even when he was doing massive concerts thats all he needed :D

  • Who need this crap, i mean you think kurk mixed up all that shit effects and tunings just to play his song?

    NO

    FUCKING

    WAY.

  • I emulate Nirvana tones with SG type guitar, Digitech Hot Rod (emulates DS-1, Rat and Fuzz Face), EHX Neo Clone (smaller Small Clone ;D ) plugged into Fender Frontman 65R. The sounds are so similar that nobody will complain.

  • Why do you need so many pedals when a DS-1 or DS-2 combined with an EH Small Clone Chorus do a far better job of achieving the sound, and not to mention were actually used by Kurt?

  • You only achieve the sound with a fender jaguar

  • Last comment yup

  • 'this is the most similar to the DS 1 that Kurt actually used'

    Just get a ds1 dickhead

  • @FretLegendSmithy I agree.. but a chorus might be good too

  • @FretLegendSmithy It's cheaper then that od-3

  • @Patzeppelin69 precisely

  • @FretLegendSmithy I saw a live DVD concert of Nirvana and I saw Kurt using a RAT rather than a DS-1... maybe just that concert?

  • @hyperliteBo Kurt used Ds-1 at the start of 1990 to some out 91 then he switch to DS-2.. i

  • @GrungeyMr I did some research, It's Krist Novoselic that uses a RAT :p Kurt used the RAT one one song though, Territortial Pissings on the Nevermind Album

  • @hyperliteBo okey but ive heard the rat is an awsome distortion pedal

  • wow wow wow wow 4:18

  • You twiddled more knobs than you did play any music....

All you really need is: a pawn shop guitar, a fuzz box, a cheap + loud amplifier, and some angst.

  • "on a budget" lost credibility when you showed the 10 pedals you needed

  • @1990EAM lol

  • considering the amount of amps the song was recorded on you're never gonna get an accurate representation of that through pedals. Even if you hear Nirvana playing it live it sounds nothing like it.

  • This...is the worst possible approximation of any Nirvana tone. No part of it sounds even a little bit like Kurt Cobain.

  • boss ds-2, EH small clone, and a fender (if available). This video isn't relevent..

  • This isn't a fucking budget, you've got an amp simulator pedal, those cost a bomb! Like these guys have said - DS2, EHX Small Clone and a valve amp. I repeat, this is NOT a budget.

  • Stupid video really the guy doesnt even play it write!never over think thru a stlye of guitar cuz youl get bored as hell! All i do is use a god damned distortion pedal with you know my own settings.i dont like over thinking music i dont think its good or natural.

  • smells like teen spirits sound =

    1.Guitar

    2.Amp

    3.Distortion

  • oh, my god.. it sounds so bad..

  • what the fuck is this shit/

  • You do not need all these bunch of pedals.

You will only need a Boss DS-2, A Small Clone, and a Marshall Valve Amp.

  • @OtavioFesoares Marshall? To copy the tone of a Mesa? Used by a guy who hated Marshalls with an unholy passion?

    Interesting.

  • Technique:

Kurt used a Ds-1 which is more of an overdrive pedal and to get that signature distort and scratchy clean sound Kurt turned his amp up all the way and his gain up halfway. This would in turn further distort the pedal's signal giving him a "grungy" sound. Because of the volume being up all the way his clean guitar would also distort a little giving him that scratchy clean sound. Also he would have the level and the distortion all the way p and tone in middle Kurt was a genius.

  • Kurt's Equipment

    Pedals:

Ds-1 (used on mostly every song accept for Polly and Something In The Way)

Small Clone (used on Come As You Are and the solos for songs like SLTS In Bloom)

Polly Chorus (probably used only on the clean verse of In Bloom)

EHX Big Muff (Pie) (Used on Lithium, Kurt felt that it was the poppiest song on Nevermind so he tuned his guitar down 1 step to D-Standard for a heavier sound)

    Amps:

Mesa/Boogie Studio Preamp with a Crown power amp and a variety of Marshall cabinets

  • All you need is guitar and spider iv

  • lol on a budget? just get a ds and a chorus... doesn't even have to be a small clone.... lol

  • Fuck that too much commotion just too play smells like teen spirt and noting else I rather just buy a shhhhhity sounding giutar and get the same sund

  • It almost feels like this guy is trolling.

  • and abit of chorus :)

  • Boss DS1, thats what kurt used live.

  • All that is just so unnecessary. A distortion and a chorus sound better than all those combined.

  • all you need is a chorus pedal and a distortion pedal.... fuckin spastic?

  • this is the most STUPID video ever on youtube i swear to god

  • DigiTech GRUNGE Pedal. 'nuff said!

I don't even think Kurt would have used this setup!

  • @ubernasch416 Kurt Cobain never used the DigitTech Grunge. He owned one at some point, but threw it into the crowd.

  • Actually if you want to get fancy get a RAT

  • We dont want to buy those pedals, dont adversite them

  • a boss ds-1 cost $40, how is that not budget?

  • What a pile of shit, Kurt used a ds-1 / ds-2 and had loads of mids in his sound.

  • la magia que hicieron estos pedales en su momento para crear smeels like teen spirit

  • Kurt Cobain on stage :

*start playing smells like teen spirit play riff to times drums come in*

Kurt : Just give me an hour to set up all of my pedals but that shit didn't happen did it >:(

  • on my carlsbro amp i can just put the gain, treble, middle right up and bass and reverb down and get the exact sound almost

  • fuck you

  • All you need are BOSS DS-2, Electro-Harmonix Small Clone and good amp

  • @MrWorma TCHECK!

  • @MrWorma or DS-1.. :)

  • @MrWorma he didnt have a ds-2 at that point he only had a ds-1 he only had the ds-2 from mid 92 on

  • @MrWorma *shit amp*

  • @MrWorma i think cobain used a DS-1, not a DS-2, not that its important or anything

  • @johnnymitnick he used a ds1 for SLTS and he did use a ds2 for in utero and live

  • @MrWorma Or a San Amp, or a Big Muff if you want a rougher sound

  • @MrWorma or boss ds-1

  • @MrWorma Or a DS-1 and a Neo clone if you dont want to waste money on pedals with the same sound but with more options

  • fat boost pedal by fulltone.

  • No all u need is a zoom g2 pedal with a crate gh1200x head and cab and it sounds real

  • Distortion ds2 will do fine instead of a whole collection of pedals dumb ass! Kurt is laughing out loud above! ;)

  • ahahahahahaaaa 4:20 :D

  • This is a good try, but remember, it was the 90´s and a f!)ucked up band, with no money at all, not to mention that both Kurt and Krist loved vintage and beated up gear... all you need is a Small Clone, from Electro-Harmonix, a DS-2, a "Roland" box, a Shure-58 mic, and a terrible Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp.... ah, and of course,a great producer and mixer... remember... Andy Wallace is the master of pop.. Butch Vig the virtuoso of guitar morphing...

  • all kurt used was a super overdrive and chorus live.

  • hahahahahahha dumbasses! kurt used cheap ass equipment! a DS-1 (or Ds-2 not sure both by BOSS) a messa boogie amp a fender jaguar and a small clone chorus he used none of this shit!!!!!!

  • this guy is stupid just need a tube amp and ds 1 and small clone

to sound like kurt cobain on a budget cuz those pedal are just 40dollars each

i think small clone is 50

check out my nirvana covers and new ones coming soon

  • @grunge2012 the ds-1 is 40 dollars including tax and the small clone is 90 bucks kurt used second hand stuff probly

  • @TheFourNobleTruths2 what u mean second hand stuff he just used 5 pedals and lots of diff amps

i just didnt know how much the small clone was and its not 90 bucks its 85.50 hahahah get it rite lol

    but yea tax i guess

  • Comment removed

  • a boss ds-1 is about €23 on ebay and a small clone chours pedal is about €45 on ebay they r cheaper than those pedals

  • Kurt used a DS-1 and some kind of chorus pedal. Thats it. Not all this stuff.

  • Sound terrible like metal? are you retarded anybody knows grunge is crappy music which is popular for being crap.... Revolution my ass

I like grunge but its overrated

  • 3:20. "The one Kurt actually used on the song" I believe the actual DS1 is around $40, forgive me if I'm wrong. If you want the actual sound why would you even think of using anything else?

  • You sound like a gay kermit the frog :$

  • i though that kurt always had his mids all the way up?

  • @roundabout145 sarcasm? if not he always turned of the mids

  • i just got a grunge pedal and it gave me a much better tone than this guy

  • There was nothing terrible about that sound when it was louder. This guy's a fucking wanker.

  • u need a small clone, boss ds1 and a mesa boogie :) go crazy with it, voilà.

  • Who care if you can get Kurt tone I'd rather get my own tone....not saying Kurt tone suck but it kinda pointless to copy him

  • my tone sounds closer than this and im using a spider III -.-

  • So to play this you will need a shit load of money, and 5 feet so you can switch from clean to distortion...

  • A guitar

    an amp

a boss ds1(ds2) DISTORTION and LEVEL all the way up and TONE at 11oClock

and a electro harmonix small clone chorus pedal

    treble at 7

    bass at 3

    gain at 7

    reveb at 2

    mid at 4

    there yaaa goo

  • ds-1, amp, guitar. that's all you need,

  • fuck i play it with my 15$ overdrive pedal and it sounds fine.

  • wtf kurt used only ds-1 and ch-1 from boss (ds-2 in ,,in utero" period) I ca get kurt sound with 10watt marshall amp and boss os-2 only ...

  • Kurt did not use tons of pedals for this song- he kept is simple.

Of course the right pickups, ds 1 and the right amp would do.

For everyone that buys the same guitar as kurt - you will not get close cos his pickups and everything was changed. good luck :) this is pathetic

  • this is no even closer to kurt's sound...

  • hive kurt cobain just have 2 or 3 effect and his messa boogie ....

  • boss ds1 or ds2 - small clone (chorus) - a litle bit of reverbe done
