I was just reading some local history, and it is very suprising what you can find! Aurther Wood who wrote this piece of music lived just 3 houses down from me in Heckmondwike! Not only did he live close by, but thee legand, Ken Mackintosh lived round the corner as well :')
I really do not care what anyone says, but as far as I am concerned this is both the best programme and the best theme tune to ever be broadcast by the BBC, from England, from the United Kingdom or anywhere in the world. As was once said, Radio 4 without The Archers is as unthinkable as the BBC without Radio 4! God bless Ambridge and here's to the next 60 years!
I live in the US and began listening to the Archers over the net because Morse was devoted to them. It's been love ever since. It's impossible to explain to other Americans how much I've learned about British life from this show!
isn't it funny, you either whole-heartedly LOVE the Archers, or you wish an nuclear missile would hit the little village of Ambridge. I personally love the archers, but i've only been listening to them for a couple of weeks, so i still am a bit confused as to who anyone is!
@mushroomanchilli don't worry! I've been listening since I was 12 (22 years ago!) it takes about a month and you'll soon get it (though sometimes some of the characters, especially the younger women (Falon Brenda and Kirsty in particular) all seem to sound the same - but you'll get it in the end! hang in there and read The Archers Encyclopaedi\ and you'll soon understand the whole 60 year history!
@dezzah1976 Hello Dezzah, I too have been listening to the Archers for a long time. My dad listened to it and I was in my early years, and as I approach the big 60, life in this country would be simply wrong without it. It gives me a sense of family stability, and as long as politicians are corrupt, expendable and useless, and the world goes through all sorts of ups and downs, the Archers gives me a robust feeling of "everythings all ok."
I do apologize if I sound disrespectful, but I agree that this should be the British National Anthem as well, so much more cheerful!!! This is coming from an American Girl!! LOL!
I'm not a fan of the Archers but I really like the theme tune. Is the Sunday Omnibus alternative version on youtube anywhere? I can't find it but I'd like to if it's here!
The Archers is rubbish at first listen, but when you've grown up with it off & on it can get to you. Sunday mornings, can't be arsed to get out of bed yet, then the Omnibus starts on R4 & I'm stuck there for another 1hr 15 mins. And gin-soaked Lilian Bellamy .. she might be pushing 60 but ... Beyonce, watch out.
Ach the old Radio 4 superiority complex is alive and well.I will admit the modern Radio 1 is awful but I couldn't say it was for yobs and chavs. Actually I find the Archers very boring but love the theme music.
Whats to hate about Britains longest running continuing drama? its fantastic stuff, & 58 years & nearly 16,000 episolds must prove that! And we love the sunday morning omnibus spiced up theme.
Iconic tune I agree! But don't be so harsh on the show. Some of the finest radio acting in english can be found here. Ambridge is a middle England farming community true - but if you think nothing much happens, then think again. Muggings, Alzhiemer's sufferers and a gay wedding - to name but 3...
The Archers is pretty poor but thats what makes it so great. I listen to it a lot. This theme tune and that of "Sports Report" at 5pm Saturday on Five Live are my fave theme tunes on the radio.
Great song but it does not, as stated earlier, justify the almost half a year of non-stop Archers that just goes on constantly on Radio 4, every after every other programme that's on, "And now, blah-di-blah gets into trouble in the Archers..."
Yes agree absolutely. When I am feeling homesick, it really helps. The theme 'Lilliburlero' from the World Service has the same effect on me - often moves me to tears!
@stokefan21 personally i find it really annoying that if a comment receives enough votes down it's removed from view, but it can still be seen by clicking on "show". Even when I strongly disagree with someone's comment I don't think it should be removed from view. I think that it is a pointless & morally wrong exercise.
very poor

Try this..!
Let's all go to Borsetshire, let's drop in on Ambridge! Let's dance 'round the village green, an'have a drink in the Bull!
Milk the cows, clean out the pigs and then round up the sheep,
Then nip up to Grey Gables and make a nice pot of tea!
