  • Can you use only usb port to transfer the file? Or do you HAVE to burn it on a cd

  • Fuck i have slim. :P

  • lol

  • In a quarter of the time he spends booting up each OS, i could walk to my computer, grab a cord, and hook it up to the TV. I guess if you don't have a comp this is good, or if you want to pirate games, in which case you are a d-bag. But really....who doesnt have a comp these days?

  • why was linux removed? can this be done on a slim ps3?

  • thanks for FAQ =)

  • Playstation 3 - It only does Everything :)

  • can you get the firmware by restoring the system?

  • dude! you missed some coins!!!! ):

  • Not any more!!!! Njahaahahahahaha! Fucking Sony.

  • tnx 4 uploading.. but ur tv sucks..:-s

  • does this still work, i bought the disc and cant seem to find Other Os option message me about this please

  • @iNoScopeZz Do you have firmware 3.15 or lower. update 3.21 removes the other os feature.

  • can i first install linux and then install the lastest update?

  • Hey guys, question:

I got it working with a emulator for snes and i can use my ps3 controller works great. But is it also possible to use a playstation 2 controller via usb? I have the converter that is needed to use it for ps3. If it is possible how do I activate it?

I can't find any results on google

  • @Soliqui yes it should work with no set up required. I only own one DS3 so I use a DS2 via USB as the second controller.

  • that starting tune soooooo old, the new one is silent.. you remind me of a lot of games and memories dude. thanks..by the way i have have 46 Blueray games for PS3, do you think this is a lot ?? if you look at my friend games you wil think he have a BIG libary !!!!!!! SHIT !!!! over 200 games i think!!!!!!!! :0 WTF

  • Did the new update take this feature out? What if I already have linux on? Will it get erased?

  • @kc9gpj yes it did and yes it will. If you still have fw 3.15 or lower then you can still install linux on your ps3.

  • what do you need linux for?

  • is this for ps3 slim 120 GB

  • how did u get that orange xmb background???

  • I installed yellow dog, And got it running. But it boots into linux and i dont have the PS3 os anymore. Any suggestions?

  • @Imboredofschool

    try typing boot-game-os

  • hold the power button for aaaaages till it beeps a few times

  • when ur ps3 is off, instead of pressing the power to turn it on, hold the power button until you hear the 2nd beep

  • I recently follwed along with your video on installing YellowDog Linux and it all was very helpful, the only problem was when i typed "install_ps3_720p on the kboot" my tv went blank and nothing happened afterward i dont know what to do. Now i am stuck at that page where you type install_ps3_720p and i cant go on from there. It is the last step so im pissed, and would really appreciate if you could help.

  • did anyone already find out how to unlock rsx access in linux and run hardware accelerated pc games?

  • can you run a hypercam with this

  • erm.... my ps3 wont install ydl, but wont go bak 2 xmb ps3 os:s

  • do you have a usb keyboard and mouse? you need the pair to install linux. To get back to the xmb just turn off the system then flip the power switch in the back on and off once. Now hold down the power button on the front of the unit untill the system powers up then back down again.

  • ur fucked

  • lol, i found out how to reset it:D

  • do the network cards work? i'd run torrent on it because it's so quiet at night...

  • yup network cards work fine as does bittorrent. see my video "5 things you can do w linux on the ps3" where I demo that feature.

  • Is it possible to run a screen recording application on linux and somehow record gameplay from like fallout 3?

  • wtf was your thumb doing?

  • can someone tell me if i can play arma2 on this

  • no you can not.

  • Does Hulu work on the Linux side?

  • nope

  • can u use the ps3 contorller??

    plz reply

  • Guess you didnt watch the entire video. @ 1:58 I am using a DS3 wirelessly on my YDL install.

  • @shinyfuzzy

    Looks like someone is mad...

Look, if you don't like it, don't get your panties in a bunch. If you won't buy it, SOMEONE will. Sony doesn't need you.

And you must have a problem with Michael Jackson. THAT, I don't see why. He was an excellent artist and a talented individual. He might've had a messed up social life, but then again, every celebrity does.

Sony knows what it does, If you like Microsoft, go get red ring and be happy with that.

  • because they had to cut down the size and price, so they thought that so few people used linux, it would be a waste of space and money

  • Can you still receive firmware updates for your PS3 with Linux installed?

I'm debating whether or not if I should exchange my Silm for a Fat.

  • Of course installing linux has no effect on the xmb.

  • Can you access your PS3 games via Linux if you have your disc inserted?

  • The ps3 hypervisior limits access to the BD drive with encrypted disks. PS3 games are encrypted so access to the games while in linux is limited.

  • my friend bought ps3 slim (250gb+tekken6) for 1499. he told me that i was fooled because i bought 80 gb phat for 1799 .he was fooooled

  • wAT?! why would you go anywhere near a thousand bucks?

  • y'all fools..:))

  • ps3+gaming console= smile

    ps3+home pc= AAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • is this 32bit or 64 or 16 bit linux guys you got any idea?

  • 32 bit.

  • Dude! That is AWESOME! It sucks that Sony doesn't allow that for the slim! >:(

I am going to buy a phat ps3 just so I can have linux on there!

  • @RandomPerson267 so the slim doesn't have the install other OS feature?

  • it does otherwise they wouldnt have install other OS

  • Yeah, took me a while to find a fat. Got one, 350 dollars, then found the same model, but with 3 games for 299. I was pissed. : D I do have linux on it, it's reallllyyy slow. Atleast, Ubuntu is.

  • Wow, I paid 250 for my 80GB fat and put a 320gb harddrive I had laying around in it.

  • I'm puzzled why you you cut the section where you select boot game OS, after shutting down Linux? Makes me wonder if something went wrong. I'd feel much more convinced of the simplicity of switching between the two OS's if you showed this also. It's a short vid showing two key things, but you sorta skipped part of one. Just saying! Great vid otherwise ;-)

  • how much space of the hard drive will this use?, can you plug a wireless usb keyboard and mouse, can you run open office?

  • i was using ver 6.1 of ydl for some reason linux doesnt like wpa so i tryed ubuntu an ended up having to set my internet to open to download any of the linux software sadly i wish i could have had ydl work for me but ubuntu is nice i like it i just wish i had a better rez lol

  • Can the ps3 (40gb) also read psx games with an emulator :S?

  • Don't try. Just don't.

  • ps3 slim model no install linux?

  • correct

  • i cant get the add remove software to work i am using wpa internet and it is configured to detect it idk why it reads no internet

  • what version of ydl are you using?

  • I do not find videos. Do you mind helping me

  • Sorry to bother you but by any chance do you know the working emulators for the YDl on the Ps3. And if you do is the NES one for them? And if it is do you be kind to link me to it. And great vid I already subbed *5 Stars

  • check out my other videos where I demo an array of emulators available on linux for the ps3. In each of my ydl videos I have a guide in the description that will detail how to set up the same on your ps3.

  • Im going to check right now. Thanks alot as well.

  • where to get linux and how to start it up?

  • there is a guide in the description that ill help you with that.

  • So, if I install YDL on a new hard drive, can I still use my old hard drive without having any difficulties?

Also is any part of linux stored on the RAM?

  • If you want to use your old hard drive with your ps3 just buy an enclosure. Linux is installed to the hard drive. It will take 10gb of space. The only ram it will use is when you use it.

  • ok. supposing you are new to linux. your ps3 has 43/55 GB of free space. do I still have to format my entire HDD just to make a 10GB partition thingy for linux? and how do u install another OS (like Windows) through linux?

  • yes you need to format to install linux. windows does not run nativity on the ps3. To run windows you need to emulate a x86 pc. Which can be done however it comes with a very large performance burden. The resultant emulated windows box will run like a early Pentium from the mid 90's.

  • this was exacly what i wanted to do with linux, can you please tell me how you got the controller to work and also how you got the emulater to work

    thanks

  • there is a guide in the description.

  • what's a song title ; p?

  • NOT FOR SDTV USERS lol

  • how did u get 2 load screen? i downloaded the 6.1 but it wants me 2 kboot sumth1ng what should i do???

  • see my guide in the description for more help but at kboot you hit tab to select an install option. I suggest 720p if you have an hdtv.

  • can u play computer games on the ps3 if you do

  • u just press enter, I was having problems where the screen would just hang after kboot screen but i found out it was my g19 kb, changed my kb & now it works everytime.

  • firts thought the video was gonna be shity but NIN helped me stay

    nicely done sir

  • Man i hope you can help me out, i tried to install linux but something went wrong and now im stuck at a screen with a usb that freezes if i click it and a game controller that does absolutely nothing. I can't factory reset it or anything, i think i may be fucked.

  • 1st off you need a usb keyboard and mouse to install linux. you can get back to the xmb by shutting down the system then flip the power switch in the back of the unit off then back on. next hold down the power button untill the system powers up then shuts down again. Hit the power button once more and your back in the xmb. Installing linux can not brick your ps3.

  • yeah yeah i went into it unprepared, also at first the reboot with holding the switch didn't work, but before i gave up i tried one more time and worked, i got lucky there

  • oh man cheers for that i was stuck in linux you are a ledgend cheers subscribed

  • does the wireless keypad on the ps3 controller work for linux or has anyone tried that yet?

  • only after you install linux and configure bluetooth.

  • thanks for this video and all of your guides, it is much appreciated!

  • Y prefer ubuntu its more simple and easy and its not that heavy it only takes 500 and somthing megabits

  • But it's way slower than something like Arch or SUSE.

  • are you sure that's not megaBYTES

  • Did you have to modify anything to get wifi working?

  • imma real dumbass i have the cd installed it and every thing but wen i first went to other os i didnt have a keyboard so im stuck till i buy one

  • not really. you can get back to the xmb by turning off the unit. then flip the power switch in the back off then on. after you do that hold down the front power button untill the system powers up then down again (do not take finger off power swich untill system turns off). now when you press the power button again you should be back in the xmb.

  • does it use up much of my hard drive space? i noticed you can upgrade your hard drive. freaking awesome!

  • 10GB

  • oh cool that's not that bad then thanks ^_^

  • can you download it without using a disc?

  • i think u are able to do it with a usb...but i used a dvd blank to do it

  • what about storing the program on a flash drive? or doing it straight from the console?

  • u can use it on flash...but the its a large ISO image....about 4 gigs or so...thats why i used a blank dvd...and u cant load it on to the hard drive bc its not a media file so u wudnt be able to view it on ur XMB...and it boots the dvd up and it switches to "Other OS" so it wudnt even be on the ps3 os...it would be on the 10 gigs that u partitioned for other OS..

  • well now i have it on a dvd. but its not reading it. and i know its not my ps3 i just bought it. plus i burned it on the disc right. it just shows nothing.

  • did you burn the iso as an image and not simply a data cd. I suspect that is your issue.

  • when is in the kboot what do I have to type to install linux

  • Thanks it work. When is in the kboot what do Ihave to do or to write?

  • ia nee help with my yello dog linux ,

when i start the ps3 it starts with yellow dog linux and when it starts it kind of stops and starts again and again so i havent used it in 5 month so please help me

  • Do you have a usb keyboard and mouse hooked up to the system when you start linux.

  • Does Yellow Dog work best on the PS3? Just curios as to why this distro and not one of the others. Thanks man.

  • YDL is tailored by the distros developers for the ps3 and as a result it has very good support for the systems hardware.

  • hi bro I saw your video and I try toinstall linux on my ps3 and is chowin me all the letters, but then it put me a blak screen and it don't do nothing ells and I turn the ps3 off but went I turn it back on is go back there how do I take the ps3 out of there PLEASE HELP ME

  • do you have a keyboard and mouse? As indicated in the description and my guide you will need both to install linux on your ps3. If you have a keyboard a mouse at the kboot prompt type, ps3-boot-game-os then hit enter. If you do not have a keyboard and mouse then 1st turn off the system toggle the power switch in back of the ps3. After you have done that hold down the front power button until the system powers up then back down again. Turn the system back on and you should be in the xmb.

  • dude.. is there a way to remove Yellow Dog 6.1 one from the ps3? if there is i would like to know.. my wireless connection isn't working..

  • just do a custom reformat again but this time give the gameos the entire space. Wireless requires a little configuration to get working. See my guide found in the description for help in the matter.

  • Ok...and regarding the wireless configuration..i tried to configured by myself before but i did something wrong and now all the time comes a error from the wicd network manager...i found your vid way to late :(.

  • Can i get the limewire for linux and use it on the ps3?

  • yes you can. though I prefer frostwire to limewire and bittorrent to either of the first mentioned.

  • What is the link for YDL

  • see guide in the description.

  • Once YDL is installed I understand how to switch from XMB to YDL but how do I go back to XMB when in YDL?? Thanks.

  • In the main desktop menu you will see an option boot game os. select it and you'll switch back.

  • So It is only run virtually?. So yellow dog doesnt make full use of the hardware? Or is it only the GPU which isnt made use of. Im thinking of installing on my ps3 but I would like a version whih runs nice and quick without lag. What is te best distro for ps3?

  • the gpu is limited to a framebuffer and the internal blu ray drive can not read encrypted disks. The CPU is unrestricted.

  • is yellow dog linux the fastest os to boot on the ps3? and what about other linux os like ubuntu, will it work as well?

  • ydl and boot at about the same speed.

  • hey how did u set ur tv resolution somehow when i did this an i have an hd tv the words are soo small i cant even read them when i log on

  • 720p

  • u deleted my comment!!!! guess this isnt for everyone

  • I did no such thing. it say comment removed by author which means you removed it. If I remove it it disappears completely.

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • I think I'm going to get myself a copy of this OS. I already play NES & SNES games on my PSP, why not PS3?

  • can u still play your ps3 game after installing linux.

  • yes. as you see in the video linux and the xmb coexist. one does not replace the other.

  • nice tunes

  • anybody tell me wat this is

  • its an alternate operating system you can put on your ps3 to complement the xmb. the operating system gives your ps3 extra functions akin to a pc. see my other videos for more.

  • do u NEED a keyboard n mouse or just can use it?

  • yes you NEED a keyboard and mouse.

  • ur ps3 booted up weird

  • nerver mind i found my anser

  • can you play normal pc games or programs for e.g FSX? Oh and can you open files like you can on a pc?

  • i need help. my birthday is coming up and i usually get a new system i was thinking of getting a ps3 but is it necessary to have a ps3 phat to install yellow dog linux

  • You will need the phat model to install linux.

  • can you plz tell me exactly what linux is because im going to by either the phat or the slim but i need to know if the linux is important enough to stick with the phat

  • Its an operating system that gives your ps3 additional functionality. see my other videos to get an idea as to what it can do for you.

  • after you download linux can you mod your games on ps3 if you can somone please tell me how

  • no you can not

  • how do you get a full sceen with yellow dog i only get a square

  • Awesome vid man! Thanks a lot! Are you using a Canon Powershot??? I think I have the same camera. I didnt know how the quality was because I dont have a SD card for it yet lol. Thats good quality! Anyway! thanks for the vid dude.

  • Yup Powershot A540.

  • so u can switch between linux mode and ps3 mode and not damage all ur save data of games

  • you will need to back up your saves before you install linux because it requires that you format the hard drive but after the install switching between the two will have no effect to anything on the xmb side.

  • what made u think this was going to happen, u only need to reserve diskspace for linux, u have to do this before installing other stuff on your HDD, if u do afterward u have to format HDD to reserve HDD space.

  • I'm trying to watch youtube and other videos on the website but it says i have to install Adobe Flash Player 10. I can't find the plugin, so i'm trying to watch your video in the description, "PS3 WATCHING YOUTUBE IN LINUX" but it says its set to private. How do i watch it? Thanks.

  • you want the video, "Youtube working in Yellow Dog Linux 6.0 on the PS3 with howto".

  • If i still use SDTV, is there a way to make it look like yours? to set it smaller?

  • not really.

  • No i'm using a standard TV.

  • Can you please help me, I have downloaded Yellow Dog Linux and installed it successfully but i am having problems with the screen.

At 1:48 your screen looks like its adjusted exactly to the TV. For some reason my screen is kinda big and i would like to shrink it a little to fit the TV. Also when I open a web browser, the browser is so big O_O I need help fixing it so it can fit the whole screen like it would fit a monitor on a computer? Help please. Thanks

  • are you using an HDTV?

  • how do u go bck to ps3 style when ur using that program and then u turn it off? i heard from people that they turned it off and turned it on and it was still in the program...

  • select boot games os in the menu as seen in the video at 2:22. linux shuts down and the xmb boots.

  • first thank's so so much for the video

i just want to ask you one question

can i use the PS3 processors with linux to do some renderind and simulations on my pc on network ?

i mean i want to use the ps3 CPU's in network under linux and an other machine under windows with a Core2quad processor

i dont know if you can see what i'm talking about but that's it

    thank's again

  • Can I install this without formating my hdd ? Cuz I d'ont want to lose my PSN purchases (psx games & saves) and my ps3 saves.

If I must format can I save all those ? How ?

    Thank you

  • you will need to format your hd to do this. your psn purchases you can re-download. As for your saves use a thumb drive or external hard drive and back them up.

  • Ok, but I'm not sur that I'll be able to re-download some of my PSX games since they we're downloaded on an older profile that doesn't exist anymore... and those games aren't in my New Profile "Download List".

Is there a way to backup my PSX games ?

Or to transfert some items from a download list to another ?

    Thank you

  • In fact, I just don't want to re-buy them !

  • If you purchased them once then you will not have to rebuy them. as for games purchased under a different account username. you will have to retrieve that account information so that you can re-download thoughs games. perhaps you are using a friends account to play games he purchased on your ps3? not an uncommon practice. you can not back up store items nor can you transfer them between accounts.

  • One question - have you tried running emulators for Nintendo DS (I use No$GBA) and PS1? (I use PSX1.13) My computer isn't good enough to run them at all and I haven't seen any videos on youtube...

Thanks for this video, when I get my 320GB HDD I'll try this.
