In this one performance you can truly feel and experience Richter's emotions, Scriabin's creation, he opens his soul! in a way that few could. There is unbound sadness and pain, and most of all beauty in hearing this. What a priviledge it was for those who saw Richter play this in person.
I like richter, and i do not inted on creating a discussion, but listen to Horowitzs version of this same piece. I like it much more because of how he articulates the inner melodies (which are essencial in scriabin). An example of this is the chromatic triplets that go up somewhere in the middle of the piece (in my opinion its the climax) and richter doesnt give them enough expression. Maybe im already too fond of horowitz performance who knows. Anyway like most Scriabin, this piece is brilliant
@mahler151 Richter was perfectly happy living in the Soviet Union - touring the US depressed him. Mind you at the end of 'Enigma' he does say 'I don't like myself' so in general he wasn't the happiest of individuals.
This is my model for the piece!! Incredible...the exquisite subdued melancholy...that tone....nobody ever created such a poem from this music as Richter. He creates a sad and rather bleak Russian landscape...this performance haunts you long after the last note dies away.
Why does Richter play everything a tempo rating slower than anyone else? I'm not dissing him at all, this is great. But I'm very curious as to why.

Languid and sadness expression of a man who dedicated his entire life to show us little bit hat was deep in the heart of the composer.
Richter, as always, let us see his true esence as a superb, surprising, romantic and melancholic human being he was indeed.

Bravo!

His playing is so innig--so uncluttered. Richter gets Scriabin in a weirdly pure way. Like Gould playing Brahms 118. Fresh.

I'd love to hear him play the etude in d-sharp minor.
Richter is wonderful.

Who are you talking about?
Richter or Scriabin?
jubulalau 2 years ago
He could really be refering to both. Richter having been living in the soviet union, and Scriabin having been such a loon.

Well this is embarassing, it would appear my comment has been removed, so I'm unsure as to what I even said.

You should be a composer. If you can understand these deep intricacies in the music, then I know you'll compose some very nice Music :)

Very hard etude yet I want to learn it because of its singing tone. Maybe that's the purpose of this etude? Anyway, thanks for sharing.
