A very similar jingle was used in an early 1980s Canadian commercial for Cadbury's Easter Creme Eggs. It's up on YouTube as well, posted by a user called Retrontario.
I've been looking for a vid of the Lifesavers commercial from the 80's "Tweet tweet, twiddle twiddle, there's only one candy with the hole in the middle." If anyone finds it, let me know. Thanks
The music used for this jingle has what's known as the "Bo Diddley beat," which you find in the song "Bo Diddley" as well as in "Willie and the Hand Jive" and "I Want Candy." It's not copyrightable...I remember this ad from my childhood Saturdays. True, I don't think you could get away with "Suck 'em slow or suck 'em fast" or "fun to lick" today, especially with that image of the submarine trying to go through the Lifesaver hole! Way too Freudian! But we kids thought nothing of it back then!
Agreed..One wonders if the ad campaignsters paid the proper royalty quid to either composer(s)...lest the suffered the same fate as George Harrison ("My Sweet Lord" B.K.A. "He's So Fine").
That said, the advert proper was a *gas* to re-visit...the animation and music was/is *spot on!*
I also love the "Yellow Submarine"-esque creatures in this ad and the other "Lifesavers" that used the same jingle! Very creative way of showing how Lifesavers are packaged!-Ha! Ha!
I love this jingle! It's obviously a take-off on The Strangeloves' 1966 classic "I want Candy" which was later rerecorded by Bow Wow Wow in the 1980's. I remember the jingle very well!
Maybe, but if you listen to The Strangeloves' "I want Candy" (Or even BowWow Wow's remake of the same song) you'll notice that the melody ofthis jingle is identical to the melody of "I Want Candy."
I don't know what they were on when they made this commercial, but I want some.

"Suck 'em slow or suck 'em fast". If this commercial was around today, there would be complaints, for sure!

Sounds to me more like it was based on Willie And The Hand Jive.

You'll also notice that "I Want Candy" sounds somewhat like The Hand Jive.

I have a hard time finding them in roll form anymore. I usually just see the bags of individually wrapped savers.
