  • My favorite manga is Meitantei Konan (Detective Conan: Case Closed)... it's really great. :-)

  • Gintama is the funniest thing ever!! changed my life!

  • MITSUDOMOE!!! SAIKO NO!!

  • I want to live in Japan so bad!

  • This video is both inspirational and aspirational lol Thanks for this video.

  • Yup, I can totaly relate to the experience of not only living abroad, but also learning a different language. Where slang is very much part of the language itself.

I was born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brasil...yes with an "S".

Moved to the U.S., didn't speak a word of english. Decided to learn spanish first, being that it was so close to Portuguese, you know, both come from Latin bla bla bla....

Then I learned english. Now i can't be quiet long enough.

But I can relate on the "slang" part..

  • gintama rulez

  • i am really curious, i have been wanting to do the same, just leave for japan and teach english, and i have started learning the language, but now i am curious about the teaching english without knowing japaneese fully, at a conversation school.

  • Berserk(ベルセルク Beruseruku). Best. Manga. Ever. Nuff said.

  • Do you like being in japan?

  • Did you like living in Tokyo better than in New York, or both?

  • @1LittleMermaidFan He actually doesn't live in Tokyo, he lives in Nagoya.

  • Gintama :D

  • I'm watching the gintama anime. It is absolutely hilarious. It's my #1 comedy anime of all time.

  • I love your dog!! Also i dunno if you covered it in your video, but did you try to learn the language before you went over? or did you try learning when you got there?

  • lol "was kinda crap" WTF you DO NOT say that about a student's paper XDDD

  • Flippant, cavalier - this guy SUCKS.

  • CHECK OUT CLAYMORE A MANGA AND ANIME YOU CAN GET HOKKKED ON BOTH

  • Your house is dope!

  • Try detective conan ... I thought that it has great vocabulary ... diferent from other manga

  • Hey there handsome guy:)

Any chance you upload a piece about dating\relationsips in Japan

(no matter whether gay or staight)

  • Regarding One Piece, in my opinion, it's not just fighting. It's not like that in the very beginning, but once you read further in you see a lot more like the values of friendship and love and stuff. But that's just my opinion :D

  • I'm go to 長崎日大 school where the ケロロ manga creator graduated from. I agree, Naruto and One Piece having like 200 volumes or whatever about fighting fighting fighting.

  • Im getting those books, and yes Nelson's a pretty classy guy.

  • There's one called Detective Conan, or 名探偵コナン I think in Japanese, I don't know I'm using wiki... and it has a main plot that is pretty good, but the story itself is not plot driven. It has a lot of random murder cases. It's a mystery novel so if you're into that kind of thing maybe check it out. On the cover of the 1st manga it shows a kid dressed up as sherlock holmes.

Since it's a mystery kind, there tends to be a lot of talking so that may help out a little bit.

  • @asceventura I watched a Detective Conan movie last night and it was really good and it had me on the edge of my seat at some times

  • @G4rkTooga when did I say anything about yuri? And @RubaShuba no ofence intended, I like yaoi just as much as the next fan girl but when you 10 years old and it's your dad watching with you it's bad.

  • You Lost Me 5min. in....Your so Handsome. ;D

  • You seemed normal until I saw the manga character tattoo.

  • fuck japs

  • japanese yellow monkey go to hell fuck all the japs in japan go to hell

    i hate japanese people

  • @fdafdsafdsafdas The Japanese troll strikes again!

  • I was going to tell you to check out One Piece but I saw it right there on the shelf :D

  • man i wanna go to japan now...this is so interesting lol

  • u had a sliding drawer for your manga what is it call i want to get one thanks can wait to go to tokyo one day what is it like out there

  • I was watching a video uploaded by someone else who claims getting a credit card in Japan for a foreigner is very hard indeed. What is your view on this matter? And if true, that means that foreigners must carry a lot of cash with them. What an easy target for Japanese thugs.

  • @macktheknife888 It isn't hard at all. You just need a Gaijin Card, which you can get at your local ward office here in Japan. And Japan is a cash-based nation anyways, so you won't pay for a lot of things with credit cards. It's safe to carry around tons of cash here, and theft is rare among foriegners. ^__^

  • @ghostofmatsubara I have a few questions...

my first question is did you get your tattoo in japan, and do people stare at you because of them...My gradma is japanese and she hates tattoos because of the gangs and yakuza that have them, i just wanted to know what people say about them and stuff

my second question is how long have you lived in japan, and is it worth going there?

Sorry if i came off as nosy i just am curious about japan...Thanks in advance

  • hi guys, I am Japanese. Someone down here is asking about the title of his favorite manga, so I will answer for you. The title is 浦安鉄筋家族, in English, "SUPER RADICAL GAG FAMILY"(according to Wikipedia). I don't read any manga so I can only tell you the title.

  • Manga for the WIN!! )^o^)/\(^_~(

  • aaahhhhh!!!! Naruto is the BEST! yea true in the begining its a bit slow and the art is a bit shaky but it gets so intense and the story line really picks up! wicked awesome! you have to try again!

  • A. I saw my fave manga on the shelf! Blood+! B. if you want a look into the mind of a true " anime geek" the try lucky star. It is a sclice of life type really slow paced anime and really funny! The best thing is I relate really close to Konata-chan! Except I'm taller! Scence your not much of a manga buff, I warn you never let someone trick you into reading something called a "yaoi" manga!!! I made that mistake when I was a newb. It was MORTIFING!!!!!!!!!!\(//∇//)\

  • @ToruSoma123456789 Watch it bro, yaoi's awesome.

  • @ToruSoma123456789 yuri ftw!

  • im a hardcore anime fan

  • Man, Your apartment is damn big. I'm living in Osaka at the moment and my apartment is no bigger than a matchbox, haha.

  • OMG GINTAMA *___* :DD

  • what did you say your favorite manga was?

  • I just love the atmosphere of this video, Was watching it this morning on the t.v with my ps3 and next to my window in which sun was shining on, It was a good morning. All your videos are inspiration for me.

  • Your voice relaxes me -~- you sound like you could teach me anything just by talking haha great vid!

  • That is sooo cool, i wish i could go sometime in the future.

  • OMG I LIVE OUTSIDE SYRACUSE NY :D

  • XD nice one Tom, you are not a big fan of anime/manga but for each 4 manga you read you do 2 tattoos xD

Also I liked the "FAQ time" the videos you upload are interesting and educational for me because I want to live in Japan and you are giving me a general (soft) idea of how it goes, so ty :D

  • Why is it that Japanese ppl or people who speak the language substitute "L" 's for "R" s in some cases.... just curious

  • @likwidlemondrop because the written language doesn't any lone constants or many diagraphs for L

  • @likwidlemondrop L doesn't exist in their language. Like how rolling R's exist in Spanish, but not in English.

  • i love to move to japan i learnd alot but i live in Norway: watashi wa Armin desu ;) Genki des ka?

  • -w- I love the Naruto and Bleach anime series, but I've never actually gotten into the manga. =w= Maybe because I'm not big on reading...Oh, I went to this really awesome bookstore a while back, and they had so many mangas!! (o.O Would that be the plural? Idk) I kinda freaked out because I just LOVE anime! And I saw stuff like Black Butler, Death Note, and InuYasha, I was just amazed! -3- Black Butler and Death Note are pretty good anime, InuYasha...meh, it's a fighting one and it's kinda long

  • I happen to love Naruto and a few other animes but I don't know enough Japanese to read the mangas. Oh yeah, how much did it cost to get those tattoos. I know it sounds weird but I want to know if the price is about the same as in America. Just wondering.

  • We are Vloggers from JAPAN :)!!!!!!!))

  • welcome to the nhk was hilarious XD

  • Your videos rule! Thanks for taking the time!! Aloha- RNS

  • is nagoya near tokyo? :/

  • wow, your where i wanna be in 2-3 yers

  • I WANT A TATOO!!!

  • Welcome to the NHK is the best!

  • Dude I envy you so freaking much...

  • you might like lucky star

  • your a teacher that likes manga get GTO

  • now people will think that if they start reading manga they'll learn jap hahaha

  • GO CUSE! My name is Joe and i am a High school student from syracuse interested in Japan. where did you initially learn japanese?

  • Once you get into naruto u get so atrached to the characters

  • what was the name of the second manga he suggested, the one after grandpa danger?

  • @TenzaEngetsu they certainly do :)

  • Damn well said! Naruto sucks! Non-mainstream anime are better.

  • @TenzaEngetsu seriously its utter crap FS look at there chart the top 10 songs are all mass produced bullshit it all sounds the same.

  • welcome to the nhk was interesting. I liked it.

  • Japanese English education is one of the worst in the world. Last time I checked - their overall English skill was below North Korea's score. They might pay well, but their system does not serve well. One time I saw a guy teaching little children how to say things like "Fuck you, bitch." He didn't know I was listening in the next room

  • @cyphertek I don't know about private but their public schools also have a nationwide English book. At least from HS on down from what I've heard. Which in that book I hear there are a lot of mistakes, but the English teachers must teach what is said inside the book instead of saying, this is actually the correct way.

  • the music in Japan is absolute crap

  • National "Hikikomori" Kyokai !!! Nice!

  • have you read Mushishi? its really good. non violent, and it has a very nice storyline too. i would highly recommend it in my opinion. but you dont really need to read it if you dont want to. :)

  • I have learned english with video games. Multiplayer games where you have to gather items to sell on markets to earn money. First I had to learn how to sell, next how to buy and then I started to speak with the people with my bad english (worse than this one [ I leave a, an and the usually untyped becouse it doesnt matter if it is on there or not ] ). I learn fastest by talking with people. Not from books.

  • Gintama manga is hilarious.

  • Aww !!!!!!! 5:21 was so cute when your doggy walked up and put his head on you!!!!!! :D

  • are you ex military

  • archaeologist are weird, i was an anthro major and experienced some weird archies lol switched to studio art lol you should look up ito junji- "tomie" manga. they turned it into a movie. but i like the manga

  • My dream is to live in japan! i watch alot of anime to improve my japanese :-) I'm thinking of ordering some original manga from japan! You've got great videos! keep it up!

  • @hkunz219 You won't become fluent just by watching/reading anime.

  • Your videos are so great! I admire you so much

  • he's hot and i don't know why

  • yeah man naruto sucks

  • Gintama is hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!! so is welcome to the NHK

  • That manga shelf is FRIGGIN AWESOME~

  • i have a question . why is it that when i go to a book store and i look at japanese comic books they open on the left instead of the right ? is there a reason , or is that just how it is over there?

  • @BFITWWWFLED they read right to left, and the hardcore american manga readers want their manga not mirrored, but kept in original format

  • @BFITWWWFLED they read right to left, that's why. different way of reading for them. so instead of mirroring it, they just kept it like that.

  • nice guitar!

  • I adore Conan the Detective! How about you, Tom?

  • it might be a little Juvenal for you but try dr slump

  • I don't read One Piece but some says it is friendship manga.

  • "AT A GRANCE!" HAHHAHAHAHAHAH I died!! The Japanese can not pronounce 'L's for the LIFE of me...

Oh and the Deathnote manga is excellent by the way :3 It has an awesome story with amazing twists!

  • @hasaraka hmm.. actually the japanese cant pronounce "R", they pronounce is like "L"

  • @YajimaKenji It is only close to an L sound sometimes... it is actually about half way between an R and L sound, and depending upon the vowel which follows it, the sound will be closer to either an English R or an English L.

Of course, the two sounds are the same in Japanese, so there is no way they are going to notice the difference when first speaking English.

  • I like the manga but don't like the anime too.

  • Hey, you should check out BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad! You'd love it, man. It's about music. It inspired me to play music, so I totally suggest it!

  • Dude, get ur hands on some Hetalia:Axis Powers kk? Now. Lolz. Hikikomori kinda makes meh sad, lolz. Have fun in Nihon, Matsubara-san! :)

  • Are you a CIA agent inciting your people's hatred against your dirty enemy japs that love squid, fish, and trying make your people understand how the japs are lowlife savages that deserved to get more A-bombs? Just like FDR and Democrats did 70 years ago to open war against your enemy japs then to invade the jap islands, to butcher us for your white supremacy? If so, you are a dumb scary terrorist for us!

  • Hurry for Naruto hate!

  • I agree what he said about action anime.. only i agree it more to action movies ..especially those that deal with guns and miliitary ..I dont get how ppl bare through them

  • Can you do a tour of your house? lol.

  • Could you recommend an English teaching job (or rather a company) in Japan?

  • how r u after the earthquake/tsunami ???

  • Pretty cool way to study the language :D

  • cool shelf!XDDD

  • you should watch onepiece or naruto on anime ultima its cool i no your opinion my'n changed once i watched it

  • This place is Yagoto in nagoya city.

  • And yes I agree, fighting manga can be boring, 'cause you just have 5 pics and two words in all of them like "omae!"(never use this in reality^^) and you must image her fight. But as an anime it can be great

  • I highly recommend NHK-Ni-Youkosou!; But only for people from 17 - X.

I watched Bleach, Naruto, Detectiv Conan and NHK,Elfenlid,

And read Death Note(I like it just 'cause the protagonist is normally the typical antagonist^^)Naruto, elfenlied. I think improving your japaneseskill with manga can be good, but not with fantasy. In fantasy they use very specify kanji and language. In Drama and so on they use more spoken language.

  • is your house considered big for Japan?\ I want to move to Japan with my sister and don't know how big of a house we may be able to get...

  • If you like grotesque horror mangas, you should read Uzumaki. It's really creepy but great.

  • BUT WHERED THE YURI GO???

  • thx your a good teacher!

  • I'm enjoying your videos very much while here at home I'm reading different books on Japan e.g. Alan Booth. I myself have lived in Israel the past nine years [American] and I noticed a similarity between your apartment and so many that I've been in here and that's the lack of permanace. Do you feel grounded there or do you know at some point you will leave and go home and then have an established house.

  • I agree with the manga part except for Hagane no Renkinjutsushi I just adore it even tho I'm a girl

  • hey im really into anime and manga and i agree with fighting manga action doesnt always work well with manga sometimes it does but theres usally not much of it.

  • I just wanna ask. Who is the aurhot of the Japanese verbs in a grance errrr... glance and the Japanese phrase? The 2 books you showed. thanks! :D

  • I recommend Naruto manga :) i know people bash it alot, but i think it is very touching and has a great story line :P

  • if you focus more on story progression and plot than on the fight scenes you would probably enjoy naruto, i think the fights were really meant for the anime anyways

  • i think naruto is one of the best manga book ever!!!

  • @J0rgeification no it aint

  • this makes me want to go to japan... right now!

  • Comment removed

  • i know what u mean bout naruto n that, im not a fan of that style either also naruto is rather over explained, just subscribed by way, im learning japanese n hoping to go to japan in a few years time n stay for a while so some of your vids are ultra helpfull :D

  • Ghost stories FTW!!! 8D

  • I saw Detective Conan! Why you no pick it up!

  • NHK is AWESOME

  • Hey, so if i wanted to learn japanese what would be the best manga book for me to buy? I know nothing of these types of comics, but they look like an interesting and fun way to familiarize myself with the language.

  • you aren't afraid of Nelson jumping out of the balcony when its open?

  • I can't read japanese, but I'm reading a manga series called Shiki that I think you might like. Idk though

  • Nelson is so cute. On the line of text type books I have A Dictionary of Japanese Particles by Sue A. Kawashima and Japanese Sentence Patterns for Effective Communication by Taeko Kamiya. They are very helpful and easy to read/navigate so I highly recommend them to anyone learning Japanese

  • Comment removed

  • 13:20 ドラゴンボールは大好きだ。

Other than that, same as you. Not really much into the fighting anime/manga.

  • Try the manga Yotsuba, it's hilarious 8D

  • I want to move there in about 2 years. What areas are oky and what areas are still destroyed? Thanks

    Light

  • Hey there.. I've been wanting to move to Japan for a few years now and am currently learning the language. My only concern is that I have quite a few tattoos. They are not hidden by a tshirt. I have been told that in Japan they generally chose not to hire people who have tattoos. Have you found this to be true for yourself?? Also, what advice could you give me concerning this? :) Your help is much appreciated!!!!!

  • what is it about you thats so awesome?

  • I am thinking about moving to japan and learning Japanese when I get older

  • Haha Gintama is rly funny, but there are some rly stupid parts that are pointless. Yet it's funny. Lol

  • How expensive is manga there?

  • @milkis13 aren't they a lot more cheaper in Japan compared to the $10 per tankoubon here in the US? I believe it is about 550 -650 yen, right?

  • i know you said you dont like manga but check out Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei its not a fighting manga at all its about an over depressed school teacher and his class of misfits you might enjoy it welcome to nhk is my favorite manga besides SZS

  • Good to see a fellow New Yorker who actually is in Japan.

  • Thanks for your advice. I love reading manga with furigana too! I agree that fighting mangas are boring...I personally like those 4 frame humor type comics.

  • NHK is awesome ^^ the tv series was nice

but one manga you probably should read is Fruits Basket, the tv series made me cry its that emotional and the manga was like the top selling books in japan(i dont know if there is any new books that have sold more tho)

  • why "Nelson"? :D Funny dog name for a cute dog :D

  • funny how nelson's trying to get ur attention ... =))

  • Gintama is hilarious!

  • Love your work!!!!!!!!

  • I am not either into Anime, But just interested in other cultures, your video blogging of japan is really funny to watch, I like studying your culture and where you live!

  • I hope Nelson's okay after the quake....

  • For your tastes, Ranma 1/2! (=comedy+"fighting")

  • O.O is that Blood+?? I liked that one, but you might not, a lot of fighting in that too. I recommend Katekyo Hitman Reborn (or just Reborn). You might think it's funny.

  • You're a teacher that was a bad student? maybe read Great Teacher Onizuka. About a teacher who was a bad student...

ok, he is also a bad teacher, but he cares about his students :p

I applaud your language learning. I was never good at langauge (took french immersion, was terrible)... I think that i'd need a lot of support to learn japanese, I wouldn't be able to make myself learn like you did. good job.

  • Interestin' vid,...so japanese isn't really that hard,...so long as ya keep concentrated to the endeavor and LOL....."Nelson's fine, eatin' his fleas,..nah,..ain't got no fleas,...just lickin' his butt" XD!! Reminds me of my ol' tomcat Sam(orange tabby)used to lick his butt often too,...EWWWW!!!

  • Funny thing you've sayd..."I nevew where a good student", because to me those will be the best teachers! If you passed true some chalenges academicly speaking, than you probably more connected to different tecnics (and probably easy ones) to teach.

Anyways, hope things are ok over there afther the earthquake and all!

  • Well you seem to be an amazing person..

i`d love to join you and teach them some other, Slavic languages, like Russian or Croatian-if you find someone interested, let me know!!

i hope the disaster didn`t hit you anyways and things will work out for you.

    Terrible news.
