My daughter was born after a careless doctor ruptured my membrane she got strep b pneumonia and went down fast. She was born a normal child who suffered from traumatic brain injury or what some would say a stroke. Through her life she has had problems medical that she fought through. She has a heart and loves and is a active part of this family and the other family that cares for her. She voices her feeling she works hard at her goals and has come along way. So:

My daughter was born after a careless doctor ruptured my membrane she got strep b pneumonia and went down fast. Scientists say the intelligence of the average dog is equivalent to that of a 2 year old. retarded people never get much more intelligent then a 3 or 4 year old, so it's not the most accurate comparison. But it is close, and it sounds better than saying retards are as smart as a chimp... which actually is true. chimps and gorillas can learn sign language.

@radufefceac Actually mentally challenged people are of the same genus as humans so are therefore humans. All humans share 99% percent of their DNA whether they are mentally challenged or not. The closest relative of humans, the chimpanzee (which includes the Common Chimpanzee and the Bonobo) share only 97% percent of their DNA with humans.

Taken to its logical conclusion NO ONE without the specific skills needed to survive in the wilderness would be human. The there ARE PLENTY of non-mentally challenged people who DO NOT know how to survive in the wilderness. In fact there are FAR MORE non-humans than humans living in the wilderness.

The guy does go for shock: as a counterbalance, his shock comments are thought provoking. It is true that the mentally limited (w/restricted development) require a lifetime of special care. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Bill Maher, but I disagree with him completely. Mentally challenged or not, you deserve the same rights and deserve to be treated like any one else. I put animals and people on the same level, animal or person, no one deserves less respect than the other. Although, it is Maher's right to say that, I'm not mad at him for speaking his mind, I'm all for that. I just disagree. I don't think people should HATE Bill just for saying this one statement.

In fact, I remember "Politically Incorrect" as being more more confrontational than his current HBO. I think what he said is true. If a person is mentally limited (more severe retardation, autism), that person will never function independently. Of coarse, we are morally obligated to care for them.

@jjetao As an autistic myself, I take great offense to that remark about Autism. I watch Real Time all the time and like it but I really think he is off on this one. Also, there are real differences between Autistics and mentally challenged people (retard is in fact a derogatory terms for mentally challenged). Also, it is disputed how many autistics are mentally challenged. It was thought that it was around 70-90%. However this was recently debunked. It was probably more like 10-30%.
