You don't just get him as a "friend". You can call him up and he sends 2 or 3 guys as back up. Pretty useful in some situations really. Playboy X gives you 20k but it's useless because about 1 or 2 gameplay hours later you rob a bank and receive 250k.
The game is secretly trying to teach us something believe it or not. It sounds crazy because its just a game, but read between the lines, morally speaking; Niko even says to himself the life of a friend is more valuable than money.
