  • Brian De Palma helped George to write the final crawl. No wonder it's good and otherwise wouldn't have been

  • well....there's one bright side to this opening crawl. no need for prequels if they used it :)

  • Can you imagine audiences back in 77 watching this (whether in wide release or a test audience)? Just based on the crawl, I don't think SW would have lasted the weekend.

  • @BPavsner Based on the crawl only, it would've been confusing. Although the one-two punch of the crawl/pursuit is what hooked the audience in the first place. So we are left wonder what would the original opening would've been like.

  • Well, it wouldn't have really gotten confusing until the mention of a Great Rift and the Outland Systems, which aren't really explained. Then everybody would've gone "WTF?" and Lucas would be known as having the biggest fall from grace in the history of cinema. He would be a bum living on the streets and referred to as the director of American Graffiti.

  • Hi, what program do you use to replicate this star wars intro? I'm directing a Talent Show at my children's school and was wanting to use this intro and change the words to introduce the kids' names. I'd really appreciate some info. Thanks!

  • @woofers76 This is from a DVD called 'Star Wars: Deleted scenes'. The person that edited it is Garret Gillchrist on youtube ocpmovie2. I do now that this type of software is more common online, so you may not have too much difficulty finding it.

  • Hmm...are you sure it's the third draft? I have done one of my own that I think is from an earlier draft than yours but the draft I referenced was marked as the third draft.

  • @jedsithor The clip was edited by Garret Gillchrist on the Star wars deleted scenes dvd. He has (or had) a page here in utube (ocpmovie2), I'm sure might inform you better. There were several drafts of the movie (as you know) i have art showing light saber carrying storm troopers.

  • @mofrakker My mistake. The one I did was from the second draft. For a man who hates to write, Lucas sure does a lot of it :P

  • @jedsithor The scripts were to big at first, he had to split it into 3 chunks. Even the final scripts have tons of dialogue that never made it to film. Try to find the original star wars radio dramas, it has like 2 or 3 chapters prior to the begining of ep 4 (the discovery of the plans, the chase, Luke's race on Tatooine, Yavin). Hamil's acting is actually better than in the movie (John Madden directed the cast). Lucas was never patient with actors.

  • Interesting how in both Episode 4 and 1 there were intros for the Skywalkers, but both scenes were cut.

  • @VaportrailFilms Yes, hopefully it will be oficially restored with the blu-ray's release next year (the original trilogy). They already showed the awesome footage from ROTJ of Luke creating his lightsaber (was in the novel) and Vader trying to communicate with him. Not sure if they'll ever finish the wampa subplot from TESB (there are only stills on the dvd extras).

  • Wow, everyday the point is driven further & further home to me. Lucas is just very lucky, even luckier then he is dumb. He came so close to destroying his original movie the way he did the later ones. He was forced by economics, studio politics to tell a better story then he would have chosen. He sorta stumble on a kind of primordial mythic typological story. An example of giving an "artist" a free hand to do as he chooses.

  • this look's like ti could ahve been done back in the old format days of black and white which by today would be very primitive ah wel to badi it was not this way say made in 1963 or older!

  • @eleventhdr It was supposed to be a homage to the 40's and 50's type saturday matinee serial type scrolls. Lucas even went as far as to say he wanted the 'acting style' to reflect that period too (Irving Kershner used a different approach for Empire)

  • So the intro here was fake? Blech

  • @MinusIce It's more like a digital recreation of the 3rd draft intro. The other intro prior to the 77 final release was actually LONGER. You can read some of the info in the subtitltes here.

  • Is this real though? Was this how it was supposed to be?

  • @MinusIce There were countless iterations and changes. This intro was based on the 3d draft. Originally it was Anakin Starkiller and his brother Deake (i believe), then he was a chuby guy. Skywalker was an olde general and Solo was a type of lizard. Stromtroopers had lightsabers at one point and Chewbacca looked more like a dog. In the end they went with the one that was economically viable.

  • @mofrakker Oh, and btw, the intro here was made by a fan.

  • @MinusIce yep. it was in the first "very" first draft of the film......

  • where did you get this from?

  • @MinusIce I bought it at Comic-con at one of those 'special' dvd stands. It's called Star wars deleted scenes/magic or something. It was edited by Garret Gillchrist, how later i found out has a channel HERE in utube. His channel is ocpmovie2 i believe and has further scenes if u wanna check em out.

  • He should have added a line in the remastered version: "I just took $100 out of your pocket, and it's not even the original Star Wars! Sucker! Hahaha!" ($100 is what the "adulterated" trilogy cost when it first came out on DVD)

  • I got it on sale for $40 the first week it was out. Remastered dvd is better than NO dvd. But your right. However, just checked out the SW radio dramas and got my MIND BLOWN AWAY! Here on utube.

  • @cHr0n0mAtiX

$100? Put down that crack pipe, son. It was under $ 40 just about everywhere.

I picked it up for $ 30 and change at Best Buy. Excellent deal when you consider the remastered footage and sound, commentaries, and documentaries.

I'm only bummed about re-buying the various VHS versions. But some of those I got used and were cheap anyway...

  • I love deletd scenes , especially from Star Wars. And it might be great to see this scene in some way in the movie. But this intro would have lacked the punch that the Theatrical had.

  • Yes, the original was the right lenght, and some of the deleted scenes kind of slow things down, but i hope ONE DAY we get to see a 3 hour cut with all the scenes restored.

  • @mofrakker

Well hell , most people feel that way about all of the Star Wars movies. So much great stuff was cutout or on the sidelines. I'm a huge deleted scene freak myself. I think just too see some of those in the big HD Blu-ray 12 disc set as a completed scene would be a big treat for deleted scene fans.

  • That robot looks like Wall-E!

  • This intro is so much better than the final release. Why did George not give us THIS. This makes the struggle seem much more epic.

  • cause its to long, its go on and on.

  • Yes it seems long, but it lasts the same as the others. Plus, the intended one, prior to the definitive one was ACTUALLY longer.

  • This was part of the third draft of the script and i guess they didn't have enough budget to implement more sith lords.

  • Yeah it would have been awesome though. Originally all the sith lords looked like Vader. That was GL's original idea. He originally called them Dark Knights of Sith. Seeing 10,20 vaders on screen would have been EPIC.

  • Oh he changed the script quite a few times, i have art drawings of light saber carrying stormtroopers. I wonder who would face ALL those siths if most of the jedi were wiped out? But in the end the movie still ROCKED!

  • Yup just watched it last night. Hasn't lost it's magic even after all these years. Still one of the best motion pictures ever produced.

  • @Satanicallyfree wait a minute, I thought that "Sith" was NOT George Lucas' invention, but a term coined for a novel that came in the 1990's...

  • @samsam29 Even though the term Sith was not used in the finished movie. But Darth Vader was always referred to as the Dark Lord of the Sith, even in the '77 trading cards.

  • @mofrakker interesting, I didn't know that. Checked in wikipedia and in fact the first time it was used was for the novelization of Episode IV. You learn something new everyday.

  • The original filmed crawl had "STAR WARS" as part of the crawl, as one line instead of stacked.

You can see a picture of this version of the titles being shot in the book "Industrial Light and Magic: The Art of Special Effects."

I once saw a facsimile of this version somewhere...

  • Reproduction?

  • Finally decided to actually check out one of your videos!I love the old footage of Luke... he aways seemed adorably dorky to me!When he was young, anyway. The droids are priceless...

  • wow never seen that stuff before!!

  • They changed the name of the movie shortly before it's release and the script went through many drafts. I love the final film, but the story intended seemed very interesting (Luke battling many siths).

  • thx for sharing, very historical <3

  • You're welcome ladies, and thank you for visiting. Hope to upload more soon.
