I thought Cenk's comments was more of a criticism of Obama's father, I mean, I've listened in the interviews and reports on Obama's father as well. He was an inspiration, an idea to his son and Obama gives credit to him for that much, but his reality was much more pathetic then that, especially looking at all the wives and children he left behind in his wake. The real genius of Obama is that he was able to turn what most people would call a dream into a reality on this occasion.

He wasn't like Kennedy, whose father was an ambassador, or Bush, whose father was president and a member of an exclusive frat (Skull and Bones, many presidents were members), and he wasn't a career politician. I am not a Constitutional lawyer but there is debate on that issue. How could a foreign country that hosts a military base be American soil. If that country no longer wishes to host that base it no longer is American soil? It makes no sense. I personally don't think there is a difference between a person born to American parents vs natural born American. But someone who isn't born American should not be eligible to run for President. That's my opinion.

Military bases are rented to the USA military therefore are not American soil. So even though one is considered American citizen because of parents' citizenship, that person is not born on American soil. That's how it has been interpretation so far. That is why Congress declared McCain a Natural born citizen. Otherwise it would not have been an issue. But I suppose one day it will be brought up again. So far our Presidents eligibility has followed the Constitution.

I think this is far from the truth. For me one of the things these elections brought out V-E-R-Y clearly was that if you're an African American and not rich wanting to become president - you have to be a truly remarkable and extraordinary person. I thought Cenk's comments was more of a criticism of Obama's father, I mean, I've listened in the interviews and reports on Obama's father as well. He was an inspiration, an idea to his son and Obama gives credit to him for that much, but his reality was much more pathetic then that, especially looking at all the wives and children he left behind in his wake. The real genius of Obama is that he was able to turn what most people would call a dream into a reality on this occasion.

I think he meant, 'not connected' in the sense that he wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He wasn't like Kennedy, whose father was an ambassador, or Bush, whose father was president and a member of an exclusive frat (Skull and Bones, many presidents were members), and he wasn't a career politician. Obama was an unlikely candidate. But it is true he worked hard and BECAME well connected in Chicago, which as you said was necessary and instrumental in launching his political career.

Even so the 14th amendment clearly shouldn't be applied strictly - he was only born abroad because his father was in the navy. It would be like being denied the right to run for President simply because your mother was on holiday in Europe when she gave birth.

Like I said before...No one is willing to change the Constitution. It's like the bible. There would be resistance. I don't think the Founding fathers anticipated many things but updating the Constitution just won't happen. I suspect it had more to do with who would have American's interest in mind and less ties to another country. That's what I gather. But then again who knows what they were thinking.

yeah I'm with you. It sucks for me because I have lived here my whole life. But if we do amend the constitution it will open Pandora's box...I agree yeah it sucks for peeps like me but I think we should leave it the way it is!

No one is willing to change the constitution? what do you think the "Patriot Act" does? why do people have to register their guns or can't carry a concieled weapon. laws like those are unconstitutional. so is sending police to harrass people at the rainbow gathering just for camping in the woods. Let's not carried away...our Constitution states "No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President." Therefore if you were not born on America's soil you can't be President.

I wasn't talking about Obama. Where in my comment did I mention Obama? I was stating that not everyone can be President...meaning naturalized citizens are not eligible. That's why I don't think McCain had legal basis to run. Congress stated he was a natural born American but it's against the Constitution. I know Obama was born in Hawaii. I voted for him.

no actually if you are born on a military base it is considered US soil, so long as both your parents are natural born citizens in the US. so congress or not he was still eligible

I am not a Constitutional lawyer but there is debate on that issue. How could a foreign country that hosts a military base be American soil. If that country no longer wishes to host that base it no longer is American soil? It makes no sense. I personally don't think there is a difference between a person born to American parents vs natural born American. But someone who isn't born American should not be eligible to run for President. That's my opinion.

Military bases are rented to the USA military therefore are not American soil. So even though one is considered American citizen because of parents' citizenship, that person is not born on American soil. That's how it has been interpretation so far. That is why Congress declared McCain a Natural born citizen. Otherwise it would not have been an issue. But I suppose one day it will be brought up again. So far our Presidents eligibility has followed the Constitution.

yeah I understand where you are coming from, but I do think they should re-examine the law about being born on US soil. I was in class one day talking about politics w/ a classmate and he said I should run for prez. the prob is I was born in Scotland. I have lived in the US since I was 3 mo. old, grew up here, and I'm not eligible. On the other hand my cousin was born here and lived in Nigeria his whole life, and is eligible-if he comes to live for 14 yrs- to be prez, a bit flawed if you ask me.

But I understand what you saying but there is a lot against you because that opens the door for people who lived a good portion of their lives in their native lands and become US citizens like Arnold Schwarzenegger. What I find great is that I went to Jakarta International School, I am half black and half white, am Australian with an American accent from the schools, and have also found what I wanted. We are the group never talked about and Obama made it for us too. Talk about crossing lines. Race can now no longer be an issue. There are no more excuses either. Work hard, ask for help when needed, and we should now always offer a helping hand to our brothers and sisters.(Gender is not an issue either)
