lol, gps 60 is great ive had mine for like 4 to 5 years now and it works great! and with those who think it takes forever for this gps to load, so will any if you don't use them for a while! don't believe me? my gps loads int a minute if i use it, or 5-12 if its not used, my brother has a magellan same thing, and another with the same thing, if you expect split second response from them your expecting way to much out of any gps!
You are right when you say that it can take a long time for acquiring sattellites after the unit hasn't been used for a while. But that was never the issue. The problem was: I used it everyday, and from one time to another it didn't acquire not even 1 sattelite , even if it was on for hours! So this is a different problem from what you describe. I have used lots of GPS-es, and I know the ins and outs. But thank you for your comments.
@kbckiwi Nothings wrong with it, it just has to download the new sattelite almanac for your area every month or so. The download takes 10-15 minutes, and it has to be on the whole time, if you turn it off, it will have to start over.
As far as I know this model doesn't use a sattelite almanac. It always worked great with sufficient satellite reception, but from one day to another it hardly can find 1 satellite. I have done several hard resets, but it keeps on finding satellites without finding any. Not for 15 minutes, but almost an hour without any result.
Where can I find information on the satellite almanac for this model?
Hi there. After years of not being able to use the GPS60, it didn't aquire even 1 satellite, I tried to give it one chance. I went to the Garmin website, downloaded the unit software 2.4 (that is the same version as on my GPS) and downloaded the world city and POI database. After that I installed the 2.4 software by replacing the old software on the unit. Next, I installed the world city database. Then I went to an open spot and acquiring satellites was OK within 10 minutes.
Hereby a follow up after the reloading of the firmware. Even though it does work right now, it doesn't have the signal strength it used to have. Not more than 4 sattelites most of the time (it used to have 8 or 9) and in the woods the reception is so bad that it loses it signal even though all my Magellans still receive 6 or 7 sattelites (none or 1 sattelite for the GPS60). I can't rely on it anymore and it forces me to bring an extra gps in case the GPS60 can't acquire enough sattelites.
When it still worked OK in the past, I really loved the GPS60. Fast sattellite reception, lots of sattellites and it worked great even under a thick layer of trees in the woods. Great screen visibility and lots of functions. And great battery usage with only 2 penlight batteries. I did a long survey before I bought this unit and I had made the perfect choice. But after one year of use the problems began as I described in my video and my reactions to other users. A faulty unit ?
@bushmaninspe Maybe it's to late to reply this comment, bot i know what are you talking about, I have a Magellan GPS Pioneer (which I suppose is older than the GPS 300 you have). One day I was walking with a friend and we were using the Pioneer, I accidentaly leave the GPS turned on when we arrived home so the GPS run out of batteries, the next we went to walk again with the GPS but it was unable to acquire satellites.
@bushmaninspe Sorry I wrote bot instead of but in the previous comment.
Now the next thing I did was: I leave the GPS on a not so wide open area for a couple of minutes 'till the unit acquire enough satellites to track my position, and then i leave the gps on a wide open area free o walls, trees, etc... and VOILÀ! The unit started to track my position and still working perfect. Now I'm saving money for a new garmin GPS maybe a dakota 20 o a GPS map 60CSx
We had a GPS 60 which we used extensively without any problem. The unit might take some time to acquire satelites while on cold mode but it is reliable ! We just bought a Nuvi 205 for our Landy and now we want a GPS 60 CSx map !

Hi, i have this gps but it takes alot of time (like 10 to 12 mins) to get satellites to track my position. What's wrong with the unit?
