Depends how "real" you want to take it. It does provide better padding than the standard sticks you find with no handles as quite often these types of sticks aren't uniformly padded throughout.
However, the object is not to turn our art into a pillow fight so some significance of a hit must be felt. I would defintely suggest a pair of gloves and a face mask if you plan on using thrusts to the face - and why not :)
