@6squirrels The advantage is that you could use it on homemade chips after you've fried them to give them that extra crispness. You can't do that with cornstarch until you've toasted it to a golden color. I'm just wondering if doing it on the oven in smaller quantities would have the same result. I don't want to waste so much energy from the oven just making a small amount.
this is also how to make your own cornstarch syrup, just make it like a cornstarch slurry. dextrin plus water plus fire equivalent to liquid glucose ...creagan.net/fireworks/dextrin.html
Sorry, last comment. @vuurwerkmaker100 and @prosurvival93, no. Do not cook it in a pan on the stove. I promise it will not work. If it doesn't burn it will caramelize. Both bad. @13aird. Lol. Don't you look foolish! :)
@piroguy1000, there is a HUGE difference between corn flour and corn starch. Corn flour is whole corn kernels ground into a powder, corn starch is the very center of the kernel (the endosperm) ground up very finely. If you grind cornstarch and sugar together, you get powdered (confectioner's) sugar. @TheHomemadeArsenal lay off the kid! He didn't do anything that should upset you so much. By the time he's your age, he'll know way more about fireworks than you!
@Anthony82949 you can get cornstarch at any store that sells baking supplies. @lovegunz1 convectional and conventional heating is different, and is why the temp must be adjusted. Convection ovens circulate and even out the heat, while conventional ovens heat only from one side, usually the bottom. @Shadoswithin, perfect demo. Exactly how the books say to do it, but next time, use a REAL cookie sheet. They have sides :)
@lovegunz1 Well showing as to how you typed 'no' instead of 'know', that kinda shows how little you understand of these things, along with the English language.
@lovegunz1 Yes and no... Temperature IS temperature, but in a convection oven, the whole oven is pretty much uniform as far as temperature. A conventional oven has hot spots and (relatively) cold spots... That's the big thing about convection ovens (and why they're awesome for baking) is that the temperature is uniform. In my oven, if I set it to 400, I can measure as much as a 45 degree difference between the hottest part of the oven and the coolest. With a convection, oven it might be 5 or 10
Well I kind of have to question, are you sure this is "dextrin" ? After all, Dextrin by definition is a water-soluble mixture of intermediate polysaccharides formed during the hydrolysis of starch to sugar. Now I know in beer making for instance, the leeched starches from the grain require 153 degree's maintained at an optimal 5.3 ph for the Amalze enzymes to convert it to sugars. Your simply baking corn starch on a cookie sheet
can i use maltodextrin instead of making dextrin? or does it have to be something else....ps the maltodextrin is a white powder and is very very very very fine powder can it work plz tell me
@weoponmakerpro Dumbass??!! Would that be the pot calling the kettle black? I was a cook for two tours in the military. A cookie sheet has edges, a pizza sheet does not for the purpose of easily removing the pizza when it is taken from the oven. I think I have good reason to know what I am talking about. Check your facts next time before you cast dispersions on someone. It tends to make you look intellectually inexperienced.
@mogeroithe i dont care that you did 2 tours in the military but you said he didn't know the difference between a pizza sheet and a cookie sheet 0:16 of the video
@mogeroithe your the dumb ass, he's trying to teach something and your'e just looking for something to bitch about. What have you offered lately except complaints?
I was running out of time as I was supposed to be somewhere soon, so I upped the temperature from 200 to 210*C for the last half hour, and that was enough to ruin the damn batch... It melted...
BTW, as I mentioned before in another comment, buy iodine and test it with that. I don't cook mine to that dark brown colour, as the iodine starch test shows that there isn't any starch left... It was sticky as hell, so it sure was Dextrin..!
Thanks for the vid. You can use Dextrin in food, it is a mild sweetener. I plan on trying this with dehydrated veggies - so good you will forget about potato chips. Also, corn starch is NOT masa. It is only the starch taken from the corn. If any of yins ever made potato pancakes, you get something very similar. Finely grate a raw potato. Remove the potato shreds and you are left with a cloudy water from which pure starch settles out. It would make terrible enchiladas, for that you need masa.
is this dextrin same as the origanal dextrin? because im staying at malaysia and its hard to get dextrin here, and i want to make lift powder, is it will works? tht dextrin?
If you have iodine, put a crystal in a small ammount of water and put a small ammount of your dextrin into it. If it turns black it's not done yet becaude it forms the starch-iodine complex, wich it doesn't do with pure dextrin...
@Nukedeuce it's used as a binding agent in fireworks. Basiclly it takes powder or dry material and binds it into a solid object. It is also used somtimes in glue and also used in other applications.
this is clearly a good method that works 5* but could i take the corn starch in a pot put it on the stove or flame what ever and just stir till its the right color?
No its not, Sunshine - Corn Starch is pure, wheras corn flour has other organic materials which depend on many factors. Go for the starch rather than the flour, which can give very unreliable results.
no dont fink ya sik, theyre both maize starch look on the pack, just that americans call it corn starch we call it corn flour. wikipedia it . then cum bak and tell me so
OK, you are partly right. It is certainly a matter of where you are living, how you understand it.
I did Wikipedia both "cornstarch" "cornflour" and "corn flour" - and this last IS literally ground corn, just as wheat flour is ground wheat. So what I was saying was that there is a difference between "corn starch" (which is refined) and "corn flour" - which is used to make enchiladas, I think :-).

Thanks for your time!
(a little tip:)
You could leave the camera in a stationary place. That way you could use both your hands and reduce the "shaking"
