This song holds more intrinsic value to me than anyone could ever know. Every verse hits my soul with a memory and a feeling from the past. When I hear this song I couldn't be any happier or feel any more pain, as it reminds me of the most amazing relationship I've known, that crashed and burned in flames that would make hell envious lol. But its a beautiful piece, and she was a beautiful girl inside and out... Every verse is like a razor perception that cuts just a little too deep.
Just like with all of their songs, there has got to be an incredibly intense back-story here. I don't think anyone could ever know it, we can just know that Duritz has got one heck of a head for turning personal life into beautiful poetry we can all appriciate.

I was a child when this song came out and that my favourite band is the same as my Dad's it may seem weird but I am so glad I am listening to these beautiful lyrics rather than the crap which modern artists call 'lyrics'. What I love most about CC's songs is the ambiguity. No one quite knows what they mean and it's beautiful that you can make them mean anything you want them too. I am eternally grateful to my Dad for introducing me to this band. 79 CC songs on my i-pod - I regret nothing.

It is true that this song is very long but even if it was shortened to a more radio friendly legth it would not be a hit. Don't get me wrong I love this song but in my opinion this song is too sophisticated and thought provoking to be a hit with today's hip hop dance obssesed listeners. It is too good for radio.

This is a incredible song but I don't listen to it vey often because it reminds me of a very tough time in my life. Not a tragedy but a time of tremendous self doubt. This song has so much more substance than the B.S. on the airwaves and yet it was not really a big hit.

One of my favorite songs, record company wanted Adam to shorten it for radio play. Money grabbing f***ers, I would have asked him to write another couple of verses (not to be critical) only part of the song i don't like is when it ends!

If anybody has read The Great Gatsby, please look at the parallels between this song and the situation that Fitzgerald depicts in his novel. Look at it, it's amazing. Almost like Counting Crows wrote it as an ode to The Great Gatsby. And there's nothing wrong with that. Fantastic song for a fantastic book.
Just an observation, I'd like to explore its validity.
My sister is a big fan, especially fond of Adam. She came home slightly inebriated from a party and put their CD on - fell asleep with this track on repeat (made her really popular with the neighbours lol Great Post.

I have listened to this song for the last 11 years. It is hands down the best song Adam ever wrote and recorded, and based on this song alone they shoud be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame. @GAdawgsfan93 some people are saying Maria is a girl Adam made up to "convey his ideas," and "he said he made her to be kinda like himself." Sounds like Petrarch's Laura was basically a made up idealized woman he based on a lady he saw once, so maybe they're not all that different

One of my favorite songs, record company wanted Adam to shorten it for radio play. Money grabbing f***ers, I would have asked him to write another couple of verses (not to be critical) only part of the song i don't like is when it ends!

HEY. LOOK AT THIS.
If anybody has read The Great Gatsby, please look at the parallels between this song and the situation that Fitzgerald depicts in his novel. Look at it, it's amazing. Almost like Counting Crows wrote it as an ode to The Great Gatsby. And there's nothing wrong with that. Fantastic song for a fantastic book.
Just an observation, I'd like to explore its validity.

both my dad and i agree this is one of our desert island discs, amazing song :)
(desert island discs is a radio show where politicians, authors, singers, actors etc. (a little more intellectual than 'celebrities') choose 8 tracks they would take if they were stranded on a desert island)

I have listened to this song for the last 11 years. It is hands down the best song Adam ever wrote and recorded, and based on this song alone they shoud be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame. On the flip side of this, it is the worst Crows video ever shot, for numerous reasons.. Sorry, but it's true.. Adam, you are a musical genius, but please hire a better video producer. -phydoughx
