Amazing how she was a shy girl and when she sang, OML it was just pure heart and soul pouring out of her =) Never be anyone like her ever again! One of a kind talent who sang her ass off and had So much emotion in her tunes!!!!! Mad love for my Janis =)
WHOA! My favorite version! I remember borrowing this 16mm movie from Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore. Too bad though- this video cut the guitar introduction. AWESOME!
It's amazing to watch her perform. She put her whole heart and soul into her music, as well as her whole body, from the top of her head to the bottom of her feet. No one else can sing this like her.
You never see her do a planned out polished performance, but you never see her thinking about what to do next or ever doing anything that isn't perfect. She just embodies the music, and if a phrase needs to go longer or higher or lower or louder than is physically possible, she just makes herself do it. When she sang nothing existed for her but that music at that moment. No one ver sang like that and no one ever will.
"It ain't fair" to compare her to anyone else. This is the best female performance ever in the modern genre (ie. since we stopped listening to Ella). End of argument. I wish that someone could have told the girl that she set the bar too high. Watch her blowing Tom Jones away in Paris for proof. Jains was, quite simply, sublime.
@Marcosspeedup what does ffy mean? do you mean fyi? for your information? and... yeah so? she still looks like she's tripping out. possibly i'll look it up. thanks.
Best cut she ever did. Still love it. Monteray pop festival was better than woodstock!!! why won't my computer post a good comment's????? huichol53....
Not fair to compare her with Amy. They are both up there singing their hearts out and we loved/love/will always love them both. Which tastes sweeter, and apple or an orange?
This song. This woman. This whole era was simply amazing; and I am so sad I could not be a part of it. Still; it's music will forever live on in my heart. We miss you Janis. I wish I could have met you.

@zunk11 aww...leave poor Amy alone...so adorable and vulnerable on that stage.....and it's not a stretch to say that she was actually a more impressive song-writer than Janis....but yes, regarding actual live performance, Janis blows Amy off the stage....
@SenoritaMargarita482 yeah, nowadays.. Compared to Christine Ag., Lady Gaga, Beyonce. She's been gone only a few months and you hear almost nothing about her now.
@zunk11 you have to go back almost 50 years ago, may be you would understand that they were no cotton sheet like the ones you're talking about,,,,,no singing class no nothing!!! so I think that she deserve a little bit more respect than that! sorry!!!
@zunk11 the answer I made before was for you, poor thing, you have to go back almost 50 years ago!!! than you would understand something!!!! I'm not saying that C,A or L.Gaga or Beyonce are no good, but if you go back, !!!!!!!!!!!
@zunk11 uhh, yes and now. Amy Winehouse was good, but not the same kind of singing, Amy was more of a Torch singer, Janis is BLUES.... two different things should not be compared.
nobody loves in vain .. and no one drug will fight in vain ... in vain ... ... suffer never know the reasons that led to his tragic death. However, I will never have the right to criticize him, even his work, which touches me deeply! Even having been died before my birth, you surely understand and spilled all the pain of a heart not understood!
When she gets to "Baby tell me why.." that felling is booming in the back of my head, Wow i can't put a second from the greatest there only one and only. Janis is the queen I will never put another Ever and im glad she a Texas girl like me
I respect her version of the song and the respect she had for the original Big Mama Thorton version of the song..but in my opinion her version is great but Big Mama's version is awesome! too bad Big Mama Thorton didnt make the money off a song that she actually wrote that Janis made off the cover....
We are so fortunate we have the video and the audio. Consider those that have been lost to history because they were just a sub-note in a book somewhere. People will always be able to see and hear what she was about, and why so many remain fans after all this time.
oh my god, i saw a clip of this years ago on some tv show and ive been looking for this song ever since. its sooo unbelievably amazing. janis joplin is definitely one of my favorites.
Yes, 8834b, it's Mama Cass. The story goes...Cass Elliot was blown away by Janis at the Monterey Pop Festival. Truly floored, like all of those that loved Janis would be as she took America by storm. Another great who stole the show (along with Janis) was Jimi Hendrix.
one of the greatest live performances EVER by anyone, i have 2 watch this like 3 maybe 4 times in a row b4 i can even go 2 the next song and it gives me the chills each time, 2 truely appreciate it i advice putting on headphones so u can block all outside noise and let her just draw u in, GREAT SONG EVEN GREATER PERFORMANCE,R.I.P janis ur music lives on

thats right she sang wit feelings coming from her heart love her, very talented and amazing girl may ur songs be heard in heaven wit angels around u for ur fans, its been 40 years thats ur gone i still listen to ur music Janis a legend
Many artists seem to make the concerts about their popularity, glorying in their fans' love. Not her. That performance was about her heart, her soul, and her raw passion. I bet she wouldn't have noticed if the audience wasn't there.
I was at Forest Park in St. Louis Mo. on June 30 1969. She was with the cosmic blues band & when she sang those white blues..electricity ran thru my veins like the first high I ever experienced. I'll always remember her. She had more class on her purple painted thumbnail than anyone else who ever tried to sing the blues.
What's really a testament to her talent is when the camera keeps panning to 'Mama' Cass Elliot in the audience, and Cass is so blown away by what she's seeing and hearing that she doesn't or can't look away.
And Cass was a major talent in her own right, for any of you kids who don't remember or weren't there yet.
Would she make it on American Idol this year? I know her vocals and song choices would. She is an icon of pure rough talent. She sure owned every song she sang! :)
One of the best live vocal performances ever...by anyone....period.
