Cualquiera diría que la Callas hubiera sido siempre tan híper-perfecta. La de veces que la voz le jugó malas pasadas aun reduciéndonos a su edad de oro 1945-1960 ! Callas also had a lot of vocal failures during her career!
I just love how over dramatic the end is! Totally amazing and quite funny also! Renee is a true artist and she is an brilliant opera singer, I don't get why some people slate her, she's incredible!!
Renee clearly switched registers...She is getting older of course her high notes don't sound the same as they use to but that is definitely her singing
@cjjacks12 I agree, but what's weird is on the DVD of the performance there's no high note! I have a sneaky feeling they must have done some post editing!!
Thank you so much for posting this. Yet I wish I hadn't seen it. During almost the whole opera, her performance is one limited ability, ill advised choices resulting in an unhappy spectacle that would be comical if it were not so embarassing for such an inspired musician.
Madre mía... si la divina levantara la cabeza... cómo te permites este final, Renée... la voz no te permite ya este papel o el dramatismo no te acompañó aquella noche?
Fabulous final scene!! Renee was absolutely great !!!! This was a great year for her! She was fantastic as Armida, & I saw her at the Met in Der Rosenkavalier & she was also fantastic in that - the audience went wild!! Brava, Renee!!
Good direction here in Armida by Mary Zimmerman & I loved the part where Amor & Vengeance are pulling Armida their separate ways. The ballerina who played Amor was adorable & Vengeance was pretty scary! Great show!!
You know, I think that unlike Bartoli, Netrebko and Gheorghiu this is a lovely woman who has a positive intention even if her outcomes in Bel Canto are always far from ideal and they are hardly memorable - very much like Damrau.
So, I never really feel at ease being harsh on her because she seems one of the most genuine singers ever. What I hate about Fleming is the same thing I hate about Gruberova - psycho groupies who give her a horrible reputation.
No, you can even hear audio from the radio broadcast on youtube...it sounds just like that. She sang a fuller more sustained high Ds in the final week of performances.
@ilfig1iomio I know, but even in the radio broadcasts and when I saw it live, it sounded like that.... They sound 'full' I guess, but they just dont sound right! Why do they pop out of her vocal texture so much? They sound worlds different from the rest of her voice in this aria
@ilfig1iomio All right, you have a point, but it sounds a bit arbitrary; the duetto is rather well known, but some point where those words occur is less known.
Whenever i watch renee perform a role, i forget that she is renee fleming and keep thinking she is actually the character:) bravo!

Renee Fleming is a marvelous singer who makes every role she sings unique.

Oh damn, that mysterious squeaky high note around 6:32-3 was completely unnecessary, to say the least. Otherwise she totally owns the part.

I love the performances from NY- but why o heaven they always get so close to the singers-thats not good-
And Im surprised about the Quiiieck- thats not from the performance...its sounds...to loud...to direct...

I don't know about that note.... I feel like when most women reach that register in their voice, they all start to sound alike.

Score: 5 for trying, 2.5 for the outcome

What is UP with that high d. It doesnt sound like her, or look like she's singing it. it almost looks like it was a voiceover

Well, in that case I don't know. You should have gone back stage and asked her.

Sounds restrained... even the orchestra lacks driving force, in my opinion. Last act belonged to tenor, he was fantastic!

I thought 'Dove son io ' was a duet between Armida and Rinaldo..

@odio46
"Dove son io" is question that's asked several time throughout the opera, not just in the duet, but in recitative, and the final scene.
