When I saw Bowie at The Garden in '74 there was a thick cloud of sweet smelling smoke wafting about the hall. Same for the few dozen other R&R shows I attended there. The point being - this may be the only R&R concert in the history of MSG where sweet smoke wasn't teasing nostrils. lol

Saw him in the early 70's when he was on his "Ziggy" tour. The guy was a first rate entertainer even in those early years. During that concert, you never knew where he would be, in a space capsule, in a giant hand, it was an amazing concert and nooo, it wasn't just the mescaline!
It's not surprising he nails it here and it's obvious the crowd loves his performance! What a great tribute to the first responders.

Back in the late 70s, my roommate was all into Bowie. I got tired of hearing him talking about "The Thin White Duke", & Bowie posters all over the walls. LOL....It took a couple of decades for me to come to REALLY appreciate this GENIUS. I probably only have a couple of his albums & a DVD of him in a concert somewhere...but he just "knocks it out of the park" with THIS performance. Also LOVE his take on Paul simon's "America", which opened this concert.

Vh1 aired the whole concert on the 10th anniversary! David Bowie opened with 2 songs -- this is the second one! He is amazing!

I have to admit, I was never a big David Bowie fan. In some ways, I don' think I ever really " understood " him. And I didn't see the Concert for New York when it originally aired. I caught its re-broadcast yesterday, on the sad tenth anniversary of that sad day. I thought to myself, " Bowie opened it ? Why Bowie ? "
After this performance, I realized why. The man is a rock star AND a gentleman rolled into one. New York was a better place that night, as is the world, because of him.

Back in the late 70s, my roommate was all into Bowie. I got tired of hearing him talking about "The Thin White Duke", & Bowie posters all over the walls. LOL....It took a couple of decades for me to come to REALLY appreciate this GENIUS. I probably only have a couple of his albums & a DVD of him in a concert somewhere...but he just "knocks it out of the park" with THIS performance. Also LOVE his take on Paul simon's "America", which opened this concert.

Egos took over and nobody wanted to open and, as has always been the case, nobody wanted to follow The Who. New Yorkers Simon and Garfunkle turned this gig down over 'artistic concerns'. Bowie agreed to open, with a Simon and Garfunkle song no less, and Jagger and Richards agreed to follow The Who (who, not suprisingly, stole the show) and the evening was epic.
