Karl Wallinger is one of Britains greatest songwriters. Its a shame his output is almost as criminally sparse as Roger Waters. Give us an album PLEASE!

17,000 views versus 650,000 for robbie williams - this kind of sums up the inequities in the world while explaining the popularity of American Idol all in one happy bow. Karl who? Meanwhile the guy is LOADED with musical talent and has written GREAT music that no one has heard.
Bonnie Raitt covered a fantastic song by John Hiatt never heard by anyone and made it famous (Thing Called Love). At least in this case you have to respect both artists....
it bugs me until today..why this song didnt hit no1 in the chatrs...or did it landed in the top 10 at least..this is an awesome song...thank you for the clip.
Hey Paul, I saw that same show in Canberra and four more across Australia. Each night World Party came out and won over the audience. I'm a huge Steely Dan fan but I was pumped to watch World Party because I knew the effect the band would have on unsuspecting crowds.
Robbie's version is him fronting World Party because of Karl's health problems at the time. Robbie picked up the band and the arrangement and did a damn fine job but for me this is Karl's song and he brings a nuance that others can't. Saw him in Canberra in 2007 as support for Steely Dan. First he won the crowd over and then he blew us all away.
Get back on the road Karl the world is a better place when it has your music in it.
beautifully written song...thanx for letting me know tht it was originally written n sung by karl.robbie u ve done good.but karl uve done it better man...
well i did like this song because of rob's version and when i heard it was a cover i wanted to hear it too, and it is also really nice, so thanks.... its always challenging listening to another version of a song without prejudice, when you are already used to someone else doing it- why is it necessary to compare and bag other people anyway, if you dont like it dont listen!
I want to write something about fate and luck. The fact that this was a huge hit for Robbie and not a minor one for Karl etc. kept Karl in pocket (with royalties) when he was ill for so long. BUt it does prove (to me at least) that success is a hit and miss affair and not always achieved by the most talented.
that is so true, and not just with Karl Wallinger, other musicians where just as talented, but never made it big, like they diserved to. anyone heard of Kevin Gilbert and his band Toy Matinee. good stuff just World Party, but never hit it big enough. its a sad story with these sorts of bands, but what can you do about it.
I guess we buy up the back catalogue (if you don't have it already) and tell your mates. But commercial success, I suspect, only comes with a record company behind you prepared to put money behind their faith in the artist to promote them. WP had their chance with EMI and a modicum of success either side of the pond. These days I get the impression Karl is just pleased to be alive, having fun playing tunes live and tinkering in his own studio. If he can pay the bills, it's not a bad set up.
WAY WAY better than Robbie Williams. If Wallinger (who basically IS World Party) had a smarter label behind him years ago, this would have beem HIS worldwide hit, not that weak neutered cover by Williams. The studio version is really something.
I first heard this tune in a film called, "The Big Hit." I instantly fell in love with the tune and still am. This version is just as good as the original (which can be found on World Party's "Egyptology," released in 1997).
To those who like this song because Robbie Williams covered it.. Try the second album from World Party as a starter (hint: Goodbye Jumbo). World Party is the brainchild of the immensely talented multi-instrumentalist Karl Wallinger.
Fantastic song, but I have to say I prefer Robbie's cover. Rob just has the better voice.

Karl's health scare had nothing to do with Robbie's version. In fact, Robbie did his cover before that ever happened.
You're correct that Chris and Dave and on the recording.

This is good but Robbie's is still better for me
