  • GURU DUTT WAS A ICON OF THAT ERA A GENIUS ACTOR A GENIUS DIRECTOR AND A GREAT HUMAN BEING WHO GAVE SUCH GREAT MOVIES TO INDIAN CINEMA NO WAY HE WAS A DEPRESSED GUY HE HAS JUST PORTRAYED THE ROLE OF YOUTH IN THAT ERA IT WILL BE FAVOUR IF SOME GOOD FOR NOTHING PERSON SITTING IN HIS STINKING ROOM DOESNT COMMENT ON SUCH A ICON ..............

  • thanks for adding this movie

  • great movie

  • One of the toughest thing for most of us is accepting realities through film. This movie shows you what kind of people this world has. People who shower you love without any self interest and those people who are with you only when your times are good. Its hard to accept this movie if you see life if it is always full of roses.

  • @RandOceans You have a very high opinion of yourself , maybe you think you are a better judge of good cinema as compared to writers of the Times Magazine and other renowned critics of the world to come here and find flaws in such a great movie. If you don't like it don't watch it.And if you are ever with people who actually understand cinema better than you (and believe me there are many such people) don't criticize Guru Dutt or Pyaasa because you will end up making a fool out of yourself.

  • jinhey naaz hey hind per woh kahan hein?

  • I'm at 51 mins in and the song he sang at his college reuinion so far is the only one that actually fits the tone of the film.

  • I read someone comment about how the distributors forced happy songs into the film --- clearly it creates a distorted tone. it feels very random when the cheery songs come in between what seems like the saddest situation a person can be in. regardless of how it is written into the script as flasbacks or dream sequences, it is ruing the film here.

  • this is a film made by a depressed person. Its obvious. Its like he's defending himself, "oh look at me and celebrate me for I'm a sad man with all these feelings, oh this world is so cruel to me, I cannot be happy and society is stupid to desire happiness, to not care for my ittlebittle feeings"

  • @RandOceans I respect your opinions. But we do watch this movie from very different perspective.

Its a story of a guy, who works hard his whole life not for his daily bread and butter, but to earn respect. Nobody supports him, even his brother betrays him. He has no friends, only a prostitute who believes in his talent. This movie portrays a love-story in totally different angle, mind, its 1957 film. World doesn't care about him, and his death is the only good thing that immortalize his poems.

  • @RandOceans Stupid comment! Can't you see the life-affirming ending!

  • @samdilip Its not life affirming, if you think about it.

  • @RandOceans The ending scene where two come together to start a new life? Isn't that life affirming? If you compare Guru Dutt's other directional ventures, this one is no tragedy. I think you are some female who got carried away by the tragic sub-plots! Shit happens, yeah! Are we free from tragedies? Look at it from that perspective!

  • @samdilip Look at the models and anti models the film provides, what paradigms to understand the world is this film offering. One of the sickest things I find about the main character is that he constantly self-victimizes himself, just look at the songs he sings to see how he thinks and positions himself. And that seen where he tells Mala sinha that she should have chosen him and maybe that would have made him a responsible man. The film puts such a flawed person on a pedestal. Its wrong.

  • @RandOceans The protagonist is a nihilist. You'll have to get a fair idea of Nietzsche's Uebermench and his idea on nihilism. For that matter even Christ and Buddha were not respected during their era. Are they tragic figures? Their teachings live on. Nietzsche was against herd morality and for the individual. Here Guru Dutt is an individualist! If the society doesn't heed, carry on!

  • I actually dont like the way the film is so unbashed about the hopelessness - why would anyone watch something that drains you? i don't care about "good cinema", that shouldn't be the standard for judging a film alone. Whats is the story about, is it doing more than making you think - is itactually making you hopeless and sad. Is that a sign of a good film for me - no. it a film with a bad attitude. We should be carefull about rhetoric in film. films should not dampen ur spirit - thts cruel

  • thanx a lot for uploading..
