I agree, pretty damn dumb. Not only melt the impeller, but the first time water goes thru the pick up tube it will inject the rubber chunks right into the motor. It's only money. Smooth move x lax.
yes, great idea commenters lets run water through an engine when its freezing out. Most likely its winterized and the guy expected to put a new impeller in ( $15 sierra marine price ) when its ready to go in spring.

Enjoy your first boat! I know it;s your first, because you just ruined your water intake impeller, and you only do that once! :-) Anyway, if you start to run hot / overheat when you get her on the water, just drop in a new impeller. not a huge deal.
You will need to change your impeller in the drive now. It does not look like you have water hooked up to the boat at all. Doing that without water just melted your impeller.
