actually tonfa isnt an ''isshinryu'' weapon. master tatsuo shimabuku only learned the bo and sai from his kobudo masters. but its all good : ). im isshinryu and i plan to learn how to use all the okinowan weapons. maybe even more. but first i have to work on what i have of course lol. its always great to expand. ous
For your fighting preference and style I highly suggest Kyokushin Kai Karate or Budokai-do if you can find it. These are full contact styles which still do Kata and they use the full gamut of Japanese weaponry including Tonfa. If you have done Muay Thai it would be good to try a weapons based karate system like these two. Believe me. Learning to use weapons makes for a rounded Martial Artist who is prepared for any event.
Im not a huge Karate fan, but I still greatly respect its beauty and discipline. Tonfas are awesome also. :P I've done muay thai and vale tudo style combat for the past 5 years. Any suggestions on a good Karate style that can supplement my training? Shotokan, Goju, Kyokushin..etc?
I liked that... Our Isshinryu school doesn't teach tonfa... What is the name of that kata? The Isshinryu tonfa kata I have seen is different, but I like this one. It's like kusanku.
Sensei Shimabuku taugh tuifa so you should find a good dojo.. if you tell me where you live i might be able to help with that.. REAL Isshin Ryu not this flashy americanized bull... but the kata name is Hamahiga No Tuifa..Hamahiga is an island on the east coast of Okinawa
in Isshin Ryu Karate Kiai are used in the empty hand Kata, although there are practitioners who add them for competition, but when i judge at tournaments i don't score the Kata on the noise,I judge the speed on the technique, the power, the foot work, the focus of the Karate-ka, the only time a Kiai matters is when it emphasizes particular technique, not every single movement.people will use a lot of Kiai in kata to mask sloppy technique or they don't know any better.OSU....
I was not aware that Master Uezu was "seeing" any karate people except for a few of his best students? With the death of his Mother in Law and taking care of his sick wife. His son is living in the dojo. You must have been there many years ago?
Not a bad kata, but you're missing a few things. Have you seen his video? seeing the bunkai ( sp?) would help you
Sorry !It is a traditional Okinawan styled tournament traditional kata's no flashy made up stuff. You have to stay true to original form and real weapons.
From one DC karate club to another--great job.

the beginning was sloppy.... nice quick movement though and strong, though would be more impressive if stances weren't so narrow...

That is probably the exact kata I am going to learn in August, I will definately check this out later!
jeanluc1992 4 years ago
It is not the kata I learned, Tonfa Sho is much simpler than this!
jeanluc1992 4 years ago
