This may get negative comments but I loved it. Grant it the tempo was fast but still I enjoyed it; however, this speed made her seem to be gasping for breath. But loved her spine tingling high notes. At a slower pace her trills would have been magnificent.
A lot of things are wrong here. The pace of the conducting is too fast at a 3 to 4 minutes. This piece should be played slower to express it's noble severity. Religious music should be spiritual sounding. I micro-waved some fast food to the timing to this! Eva Mei is a lyric-coloratura soprano that sings Mozart beautifully but Rossini's Stabat Mater is unsuited to her voice. This calls for a darker and bigger voice - Callas, Price, Caballe, Vaness, etc.
TOO FAST...the poor strings can't even get any clarity out on their staccato riffs. The rhythm of the piece (which so characterizes all of Rossini's music) is compromised...what's the rush? The soprano has enough breath support to sing the phrases if they were slightly slower. This is just me-- I prefer a more noble, stately approach to this piece, rather and a mad dash to the finish line. The trills work better, and the soprano has more space to emote with her interjections.
Bravissima. Fantastic even on the face of such a murderous tempo and a conductor who is incapable of keeping the orchestra at a decent level of volume.

...una delle tante "bufale" di oggi!!! Non esistono più le vere personalità artistiche! Solo gente che canta...a volte bene...ma senza carattere! Soprani così a "casa" ce ne sono tante...basta avere gli appoggi giusti!
What a pretty voice. Perhaps the voice is too small for this piece, though? The performance lacked the smoothness of Caballe's rendition, and there seemed to be a struggle to project over the orchestra.

I don't hate the tempo at all... but damn that's a loud orchestra and choir.

Brava Eva Mei,
bellissima voce, frescha e dolce. Tecnica super-solida.... e come spesso accade è molto più apprezzata all'estero che in Italia!

Well, really it's not her voice too small for the piece, but the volume of chorus and orchestra that is excessive: it's Rossini, not Wagner!
skyriver83 2 years ago 2
@somemyrrh Of course she lacked the perfection of Caballe's rendition. She is not even in the same league as Montserrat Caballe, the Goddess of Opera.
