i think the guys story has some truth to it, but he only knows what was told to him and the story was passed down and kind of all over the place so he doesnt really know alot of the facts and is missing alot of pieces and might of just pieced it together himself

My old neighbours growing up were direct relatives of Pat Garrett. And I can tell you, what got me interested in Billy The Kid. Was their story how Billy was not shot and killed by Pat. But, the story made a book. And got him a job working with pres. Roosevelt, til he screwed it up hanging with old friends. As for Billy. They claim. His real age was unknown, he did go to old Mexico. Where and when he died, who knows. If its true. Someone has proof of it.

Do I believe that billy the kid died an old man? yes but is this story true? definetly not . from the time Billy the kid was born to the time his grandfather received those letters puts billy at 79 years of age. do I believe that it was possible for him to reach this age well anything is possible but not probable. the medical situation the way it was back then in the united states it would have been hard enough to reach that age with the lifestyle he lived here let alone in mexico

This guy might be legit about some things but I dont think this story is true. I dont think Pat Garrett killed Billy the Kid but I dont believe this story. He just contradicts himself too much. It started out as one letter then it turned to three. And he said his father got them but then he said he didn't know if his father got them or what.

I don't believe this story. Piedras Negras is a border town, just acroos the Rio Grande from the town of Eagle Pass, Texas. The United States Army constructed Fort Duncan at Eagle Pass, Texas in 1849. Why would Billy the Kid, an outlaw, decide to spend the next 50 years of his life hanging out 3 miles from a U.S. Army fort? The story might be a bit more believable if it was stated he retired in deep Mexico, like Durango, or Guadalajara.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment, and I must say I agree with you and you are the first person I've answered since I posted this video. Having done extensive research on Billy, his ego would'nt have allowed him to stay hidden away so long and so remotely. This remains online because the park historian affirms this old guy really IS who he says he is and oral history is important. But his story is implausible to me too.

I don't think we will ever really know the truth of what happened to Billy the Kid. Too much time has passed, I agree Billy wouldn't have been walking anywhere without a gun on, still its just a story after a story.

If it wasnt why not do a DNA test on the body in the grave? They did it on Jesse James.Because if it isnt some towns loose the revenue dollars from the tourist.

@seekufirst17 The Kid didn't abide by any honor or loyalty. He let Tom O'Folliard ride into an ambush set for him at Fort Sumner while he rode at the back of the pack and escaped. He was also sleeping with Charlie Bowdrie's widow not long after Bowdrie was killed. And he was a murderer long before The Lincoln County War having murdered one of his friends with a knife over an argument when he was just a teenager. He wasn't the dashing young Robin Hood the movies have made him out to be.

Its a recorded fact that deputy Poe said that Pat Garret shot the wrong man. Garrets own daughter even said her father did not kill Billy. Billy was not wanted in old Mexico to my knowledge. so if all I have to do is cross a line to be safe, why bother going any farther

i remember back in the 70's i think, an old guy came on johnny carson and said that he was billy the kid, i would love to watch that again but cant find it, there is a small clip of it at the end of young guns 2 if i remember right.

Mr. Salizar is absolutely correct. There is no death certificate for Billy any where in the Territory or the State of New Mexico. This information is confirmed in the book called "Alias Billy the Kid" by Morrison and Sonichson.

However I'm truly convinced that Billy is the one lying in the grave up in Fort Sumner.

Furthermore, don't forget that there was much corruption in the NM Territory where rich cattle and land owners paid off and gave kick backs to "Sherriffs" and such "deputies" for turning a blind eye to shady business dealing and cattle rustling. I believe that Billy decided to fight back in a corrupt world as he knew it.

It's amazing how history becomes legend and then legend becomes exaggeration. It's sad that Billy the Kid is known as a ruthless killer but actual accounts tell differently. For example, the biggest myth was that the Kid killed 21 men one for each year of his age. There is no evidence of this what so ever. Factually, he killed about 6 men. Two in self defense, two while trying to escape and two during the Lincoln County war. Most accounts tell Billy of a boy who hated injustice.

Some say Garrett could never been good enough to kill the Kid, but practical thinking rains on this boisterous idea: Garrett waited in ambush and killed one of Billy's crew at both Ft Sumner and again at Stinking Springs. I am from Ruidoso, it is about 30 minutes from Lincoln and this is a very old story. Facts in books are things we were told to believe, some of the information is very compelling and this as likely true and is the story of Pat Garrett. There is an old movie with Kirk Douglass that tells this story, he isn't billy the kid in the story, but it was based on this belief.

Isn't that just what you're doing? Accepting the popular story as the absolute truth? It all depends on which "facts" you're checking out. Perhaps you should do some more time traveling, "1880", and talk to the dozens of people who identified Brushy Bill as Billy years after he was supposedly killed by Garret, and signed affidavits stating so. Read the book "Alias Billy The Kid", written in the 50's where Bill tells his story and you can read the legal docs. and affidavits yourself.

The FBI did compare photo's of Brushy Bill and the other weirdo who claimed to be Billy, and the FBI clearly stated without a doubt that the all three photos (Billy, Brushy, and John?) are definately 3 diferent people.

I think it would be hard to say that Garret shot Billy. Lots of lawmen were as crooked as the day is long. But friends like Billy and Garret, it would have been hard to get past that, and to be pay able to pull the trigger on your compadre.

The reason I think Billy wasn't killed by Pat is....

His Grave was dug up in the 1970's. No remains of his were found. It was a "fake" grave to cover up that Pat Garret actually Killed him. But the Tunstall and McSween are real Obviously. we'd never know that if he was shot (because it was only Pat and Billy in the house.)

I really think youre right. Its a little too strange about the grave not having any remains even though they say that a flood washed his bones away, but thats just an excuse. And ya, it was only Pat Garret and the Kid himself in the room even though they say that Pete Maxwell was in the room too. Actually pete maxwell was not only in the house but in the room when garret killed billy,, also petes wife was in the house,, billys body was indentified by many that knew him ,, garrett did in deed kiil billy,, as for the grave location ,, there was a major flood in the 1890s that washed away many headstones,, they were returned to aproxament locations,, if you do research you will find that billy died that nite,,read witness testimonys
