  • wow i actually got goosebumps listening to this... i wasn't even listening to the stereo version! bravo!

  • She has so much conviction in her playing. I think that's the only way you could pull off this concerto. Every note is played with so much beauty and confidence.

  • I have 2 beloved recordings of this concerto; Oistrakh & Borris Belkin. I didn't think that anyone could compare with either of these performances-- that is, until now. Parts of this concerto always reminds me of something you might hear in an Alfred Hitchcock movie; so much suspense. Hilary Hahn's playing is full of suspense. Not a single bar bores me. She's not only a joy to listen to but a pleasure to watch as well. No funny faces or dancing about like Joshua Bell. Great form & concentration.

  • One thing I like so much is that Hahn never over performs as some other musicians do, for example Bell. She is very controlled, but still perfect on interpretation. This year I will go to her concert for the 4th time :D

  • Love this. One of my favorites violin concertos.

  • I just can't stop listening to this...

  • I'm not a big Prokofiev's fan..but as days are passing... his music fascinates me! Hilary's talent is sublime! :)

  • by god .. that was beautiful in her teens hilary ... that beautiful ... very very beautiful .. I am filled with joy that is so cute and so superior touch this music ... beautiful, my god!

  • 9:25 cough-fest

  • The ten people who don't like this are so fascinated that they have choosen the wrong button!

  • I hope Ic an play this piece in the next two or three years...

  • Fantastic intonation, which is not always the case with other performances from other violonists.

  • @LadyInDaHouse88 People say artistic expression matters more than intonation. I say that's a sad excuse. If you can't play in tune I can't appreciate your artistic expression, it's too distracting.

  • Haha the beginning sounds like the saint saens :L

  • haha i always love the wave of coughs and bodily noises after a performer finishes a movement lol :D

  • madonna è tutto fuori sincro.....

  • Great!!!

  • i'm playing this right now. wish i could play it like her.

  • Taught her everything i know....so proud

  • This music, this performance -I must hear it now and then. Her sound- is it called intonation? -is so pure. It calls you into the very core of this peace as I hear it. I hear it the best when I dont look at it. It disturbs me a little that she is so beatyfull!

-Yes, please come to Denmark soon!!

  • I can say that this is the best rendition that I have ever heard!!!! Hahn is really a genius!!!!

  • love it just please movement is kinda scary like a exorcism or orgasm please try to keep some composure

  • Hilary Hahn please record this! And please come to Denmark soon! :-)

  • I'm always stunned by the purity of her tone, even in really intense pieces. Phew.

  • I love this conductor, he is so expresive... :D , and of course , Hilary´s performance, it´s just perfect.

  • ...amazing... I'm almost speechless... imaginative chord progressions, all the right instruments playing all the right things, great depth and texture... Hilary and the orchestra did this wonderful piece justice here.

  • Yo creo que Tom Jobim tomo mucho de este músico, hay coincidencias con su música especialmente las reiteraciones o fraseos medio tono más bajo muy de Tom.

  • 9:26 who's caughing?

  • @MrRiR1 the person in the 27th row 21st seat

  • @boomer4666 how do you know that?

  • @MrRiR1 i don't, and i dont think everyone can know. i just said that because i was trying to prove that the comment i replied to was extremly unessary. i also thought i'd add some humour in it

  • @boomer4666 hmmmm... it don't have to be necessary :p

  • @boomer4666 rawr, I thought it was funny until MrRiR1 called the joke out. :C

  • @arcturian627 sorry, that was not my intention :(

  • this made me smile :)

  • This is one of my favorite pieces. In college I used to study to classical musical and Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1 was one of the few pieces I could seem to concentrate while I was studying but still feel the music at the same time. I have always loved this piece intensely.

  • Prokofiev never gets old!

  • Not that you should ever play a piece without being completely absorbed by it, but this is one of those pieces that really can't be played without being completely absorbed in it; you'll just look extremely idiotic if you do... (example: 5:58)

So amazing! I saw this the other day live... you have to be bold simply to attempt this piece, let alone perform it.

  • @alwaysprocrastinator you talking about Hahn? or someone else

  • Wonderful!

  • Lovely!

  • What a great full bodied tone:)

  • State of the ARTist!

  • I want to bye record of Hilary Hahn playing Prokofiev violin concerto!!!!!!!

  • I love U!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • why hasnt she recorded this!

  • Boris Belkin, Prokofiev Violin Concerto nº1 Part.2 is less better.

  • ----Note for manifold0606-----Compare passage 6:50 to Boris Berlin at 1:50 and listen carefuly

  • she puts the sexy in the violin. i freaking love her.

  • That was a perfect performance. oh my goshh!

  • ahcoughh! achoghh!

  • She's a Monster!!!!!!!!!! i love her!!!!!!!

  • Is there a place on the internet to buy HD performances of the classical music? like this one?

  • @cnabaie try Medici.tv

  • @cnabaie I think Linn Records offers .flac and .wav in 24 bits / 96/192Khz for download, online.

  • the music stops, and the whole auditorium starts coughing! =b at least they held it in!

  • I know what to expect from Hahn in terms of technical prowess so this time I was curious to see her negotiate the tricky accents in some of the passages of this movement and I was not let down. What I did not expect was the moving quality of her playing. A great artist!

  • Perfect performance!!!! but if u look at her fingers u can see the video and audio is out of sync....... could u fix it?????? :) :) :) ...its kind of annoying.... I mean when u have such a great video!!!!!! :)

  • I love the way Hilary plays Prokofiev. His music fits her so well.

  • A sizzling performance by Hilary Hahn: high virtuosity.

(six people accidentally hit the "thumbs down" button- a pity. Be more careful, people.)

  • I love how rapt everyone's attention was to the performance, as showcased by the massive amount of coughing at the very end lol

  • Huh, the version that I used to listen to was quite remarkably different from this. Can't be sure whether this is better though. I like how she performs this piece from 5:30, but can't say the same for the part before that (especially from 2:30, a bit slow, IMO).

  • Wonderful piece.

Oh, and stop feeding that troll.

  • Look, I think that music is music, and females can play music just as well as males can. How you play shouldn't depend on what sex you are. It should depend on how hard you work at it, your talent level and whatnot. I don't think it's right for ytertyu or whatever to be a sexist pig about women musicians, and maybe it wasn't right for me to call you a chauvinist pig. One thing: If you can't reply in a civil manner without saying trash, that means that what you're saying is trash unto itself.

  • hilary hahn is sooo hottt. id play on her g string all day sonnn

  • The opening is soooo similar to bernstein's serenade (phraedrus). the violin establishes the main theme and then the orchestra enters in by small groups. Almost fugal.

  • @cellofreak991 only prokofiev wrote this much and much earlier

  • women shouldn't be allowed to play Prokofiev and Shostakovich ..they should stick to Tchaikovsky , Mozart , and other sissies

  • @ytertyu you do not know anything about music i am a woman and i play this concerto as many others do!! please dont hate us for being so talented!

  • @ytertyu you do not know anything about music, i am a woman and i play this concerto as many others do!! PLEASE do not hate us for being so talented

  • @100violinista sure , women are talented, and I actually married one of my wives only for her musical talent .. but talent isn't everything when it comes to arts..women are much better designed to bring up kids than create or experience deep emotional masterpiece..so , go to kitchen and prepare something to eat , bitch ..I am getting hungry..and wear your belly-dancing costume , I am in the mood for, you know what ;)

  • @ytertyu I'd just like to say that often in modern day culture, men are brought up to be narcissistic chauvinist pigs. You are an EXCELLENT example of that, m'dear. If women were designed for the express purpose of bringing up kids, then we would be like animals- quite unable to 'create or experience deep emotional masterpiece.' If that were true, why are women scientifically proven to be more mature than men? Being mature, we can express deeper emotions than immature CHAUVANIST PIGS.

  • @Dreamkitz32 please note that I have absolutely nothing against the male gender. not all are immature pigs.

  • @Dreamkitz32 hey , you stupid little cunt , how many pigs you blew so far ? I bet none ..so, go back to your harry potter , or otherwise you might get fucked by one of those chauvinist pigs , and hurt

  • @ytertyu wow. W-O-W. Just because you can't come up with a good argument, you decide you can insult me? What's the saying- sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me? Well I think I can apply that here. And thank you, I WILL go back to my Harry Potter. He's gone a lot farther in life than you EVER will.

  • @ytertyu There is no reason for you to post 'females should stick to mozart and tchaikovsky,' any more than there is for her to start bursting out into a feminist rage. Either your sense of humour is twisted or you really do think females aren't capable of thought. You're not very thoughtful yourself either way.

  • @clubsandwedge who has invited this self-righteous homosexual prick here ? hey boy , this is not a right vid for gays' rights activist ..this is between women and me ..though , some big fat dick would keep you busy and away

  • @ytertyu 'self-righteous' isn't an insult.

  • @clubsandwedge feminist rage... I find that quite amusing xD don't get me wrong, I actually really agree with what you say there

  • @Dreamkitz32

    1. How does one quantify maturity?

    2. Where do you get your facts?

    3. What do you mean by chauvinism, it's a very vague word?

    4. Rationality comes before expression of emotion because expression without thought is babbling, you agree? (FYI my conception of rationality doesn't class people such as Hitler as rational)

    5. Why is it that rationality is thought of as masculine in our culture? (I'm not taking any stance for the moment, just looking for your answers)

  • @100violinista hey, i'm with you on that. women have just as much talent and should earn as much respect as men do. not all women are just housewives who stay at home and cook, or some belly dancers to enchant men. there are women out there who can play just as beautifully and as powerfully as males do.

  • @sakura678910 'as powerfully as males do' ...ha ha .. why always some pervert dykes try to be strong as males ??. proud of being female and enjoying it isn't enough ? you poor confused creature

  • @ytertyu call me what you want. you can't change my thoughts on being a woman. on the other hand, i can change your thoughts either, so i guess i'll save some breath instead of getting into an argument about women.

  • I cannot see how anybody could possibly consider this concerto crap! It is my absolute favorite violin concerto and I love alot of them. My favorite version is Vengerov's. It is rythmically and harmonically rather odd if you listen to the whole thing. Of course it's not odd if your used to listening to mainly Stockhausen or Penderiecki or some of Shonberg's stuff but for a tonal piece it get's odd.

  • how can she play every note so CLEARLY?

  • Heh, heh. Every time I think I'm pretty good I see a person like this. Lol! Amazing playing and musicianship.

  • simply divine

  • Her bowing is simply superb. If you were to close your eyes and listen to how long she stretches some of those notes out, it would seem as if she were playing with a four foot bow! Such fluidity...

  • LOL... I love how everyone coughs after MVMT 1 is done like they were waiting for it haha

  • @armydude84

i never, never, NEVER heard a live recording without a cough before or after the performance. do people really cough that often? never noticed...

  • 4:14 I half expected the harry potter main theme to come out :P

    what a magical piece!!

  • 4:00 AHHHHHHHHHHH <3 <3 <3

  • Not often you can hear to play a violin so clear, so in order and so good, but I can't hear any musical imagination of the timbrical carachter of the different sections, that in Prikofiev are very important!

  • I heard her in BSOTON on Thursday!!! :)

  • I heard her play this yesterday here in Reykjavik Iceland and it was fantastic.

  • @ornleifs What did she play? I heard her once as well...She played the Tchaikovsky!

  • @minsypie She played this - what´s she´s playing on this video - Prokofiev No 1.

  • Such a remarkable musician..

  • This piece is fantastic and Hilary's playing is just mesmerizing. I visited a friend of mine in NYC this weekend and we got a chance to catch a local orchestra called the Chelsea Symphony performing with a phenomenally talented young violinist named Amanda Lo. [the video ID# is: qbF1Muv3O1Q] I couldn't wait to hear the piece again so I searched for it on YouTube and of course Hilary's came up first. What a performance!

  • Hilary will play Prokofiev this evening in Belgrade (Serbia) with The Royal Schotish National Orchestra and maestro Stephan Denev as a conductor. We are glad that we will be able to hear and to support her.

  • Hilary Hahn's amazing... Prokofiev and Hilary, now who would've thought of that? It sounds so pretty good too!

  • She plays it very clean in comparison to other recordings, usually you kind of hear the orchestra play very clean and violin little rougher to creat contrast but this is different. She must be a calmer russian..ha!

  • This is my favorite recording of this song!

  • what song? though this is a very recording of this piece.

  • @euch27 of "this concerto"....this is not a song. :)

  • @lau399 concerto :)

  • Isn't it great that Prokofiev wrote the movements under ten minutes so they fit in YouTube?

    Great performance.

  • in fact, the videos on youtube need to have 11 minutes or less.

  • @fourplusseven well first movement of prokofiev violin concerto 2 in g minor is 10: something, but that still works for youtube. ;)

  • @fourplusseven no...more like they played it under 10 minutes...

  • @fourplusseven Yes. He was especially clever at making sure the movements were less than ten minutes. He kept looking at his watch when he was composing them.

  • <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

  • best interpretation ever

  • It's a shame that Prokofiev didn't write any concerto for the flute. The sonata's great though (op.94).

  • Sonata IS great! I love that scherzo.

Plus you have the end of this movement, that's pretty good for you.

And the bird in 'Peter and the Wolf'. :)

  • it is also for violin I think

  • the two prok violin concerti are amazing the g minor is really a fave .amazing slow movement.

  • It made sense grammatically but not really musically to me TBH. Dig on the 'Tube for Hahn in Stravinsky, Barber concertos for example, you are saying they are less unorthodox than this?

  • Comment removed

  • It doesn't get better than Prokofiev, Hahn

and Jarvi. What a sublimb trio. I love Jarvi

conducting Sibelius. Hahn is more than

a great virtuoso, her expressive and interpretive genius is the ultimate.

  • Damn good. Amazing piece and amazing performance!

  • I've heard this piece of music several hunded times by a dozen different fiddlers and hers is my favorite performance--delicate enough, with a sure searing line, but muscular enough to carry the orchestra and Prokofiev's deep drama and she includes the full variety of colors. Wow.

  • Ha! The guy thinks timpani are tom-tomes and a Japanese is a Chineese (sic) "dude". And furthermore, thinking the player is scared, he thinks it's funny. Meanwhile Hillary the Divine playing the great Prokoviev! What a world, what a world! to quote the Wicked Witch of the East!

  • i would like to learn from you hilary hahn! you are me my idol!

  • hahn is a beast. and i mean that in a good way:)

  • It's timpani... and he actually looks kind of indifferent to me. Hilary is amazing though.

  • He's Japanese, as this is a Japanese orchestra.

  • japanese.

  • They're timpani's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dear All, Would this video not elicit more objective comments if the sound was in synch? I do not think this is caused by my equipment or connection.

  • hilary hahn was taught by some of the greatest violinists that had years of experience. it is amazing that you can see their experience in her. she is an excellent player.

  • I LOVE YOU HILARY !!! :-)

  • She is not the best violinist for me, but I love how she plays this concerto... it's incredible.

  • who is?

  • She is as natural as intelligent.

  • i agree with Mtoutex- about the end of te 1st movement))this interpretation made me feel the beauty of the end....

  • Brava! Si capisce già dal primo La Ree.

  • 7"40 : Incredible. I have never loved the end of the first mvmt like this time...

  • it is the most beautiful moment in music, imo

  • Is this video slow for anyone else too? The audio and video aren't matched up.

  • Yes, the synchronization is off, but I think the video is Early. Maybe the phenomenon is Utube. Or, the edit from the TV station. Let's find the culprit and demand a re-edit.

  • damn. I was gonna sleep.

now I can't get off the computer

  • i agree 343598% with ViolinSpaz

at least not all drugs are forbidden!

  • you percentage is so accurate

  • Hilary + this concerto= *drooooooooool!

I cant stop listening to its awesomeness, its sooo addictive

  • What!? okay, I agree that Hilary Hahn is awesome, but this concerto is wonderful too! It is so NOT crap!

  • How can anyone say this piece is crap? Wanker

  • who said that? I will REND them limb from limb

  • Cast your eye down the postings. Some silly git thinks he has an opinion worth airing.

  • GRRRR its him! Jason101! He insulted STERNS interpretation of introduction and rondo capriccioso to. There are three reasons why he may have done this: he's an arrogant bastard either has no taste, wants to sound inportant or is deaf. Wait there is a fourth he is legally retarted and VERY easily amused. I douby you could do better Jason, so either get some taste or get a life!

  • Well next time you see him, tell him from me that he is an ignorant little crapster. Thanks.

  • @ilkinond I wouldn't say it's crap, but you have to admit it is very odd sounding. My orchestra is playing this, and this song is a real pain rhythmically, not to mention, and intonation nightmare with all the accidentals and dissonant chords. Also, what's with the soloist playing pizzicato and going way up on the fingerboard for so long is bizzare. Crap? No, not really. But it's not hard to see why some find this unpleasant.

  • @NstGuitarist "Odd sounding"? Sounds VERY tame rhythmically and harmonically to me.

  • LMAO...You think this piece is crap? Wow.....reality check needed for you. This is amazing writing, and if you can't hear it, I think you better not bother in music. Just my personal opinion. I have never heard a pro call these Proko violin concertos crap. Never.

  • funnily enough middle-aged cranky woman you are just about the most cranky person i have ever met. so you would tell bernstein to push off after he called tchaick's manfred 'a load of trash?' or if barenboim happened to used the c word when describing wagner's first symphony? and tchaick's manfred, probably the best example, is a beautiful work considered one of those that really epitomize his writing.

furthermore, do not simply leave it down to generation to decide musical appreciation.

  • I don't understand how some people dare to rate less than 5* on Hilary's performeances. She is brilliant!

  • There are some older recordings that have more flexibility. She is amazing, obviously, but there isn't much freedom in comparison to the "dead guys."

  • Yes, she is somehow "too perfect" - a kind of very sophisticated "violin machine" ... not in bad sense ... but somehow yes ...

  • it's a conscious choice.

you can either interpret the piece loosely and try to innovate, or you can play the piece as it was intended by the composer so that you can convey the talent not of yourself as the performer but of the composer as a composer.

they're two different styles of interpretation with two totally different purposes, so it's not fair to compare the two except in terms of your own personal listening preference.

  • No offense kiddo, but I am a seasoned professional that has performed with Hahn many times in a major symphony. I have played for over 40 years, so please refrain from explaining. You are only partially correct. The other part to this is that this is HER personality in her playing. She plays from mainly intellect. The old style is pretty much long gone, unfortunately, and only us "old" timers understand that loss musically. As Perlman said in the AOVP, "there are many good violinists today,

  • but where are all the greats?" I understand that comment. The question is, does your generation? With your comment/reply to me, it seems as if the answer to that question is, "no." That is unfortunate for you and your musicianship.

  • no offense kiddo? you're instigating and condescending. which is fine, considering you're clearly a cranky old man and youtube's got flamers of every age group, but don't tell me that you meant no offense.

if, for instance, hahn chooses to focus on expressing the intellectual rigor that bach had in his music, then i don't think you can say that "the" old style is dead, because bach is older than the "dead guys" you likely speak of. you're casting a rather selfish value judgment here.

  • I have the right to speak of anything I choose. I do believe that you are in an act and that you are trying far too hard to prove yourself here. I have no desire to play that game, especially when I can tell that you are young, with little experience, and probably aren't even a serious player. As far as me being a cranky old man, I am not. I am middle aged, vibrant, and a female. I just started playing very young. I realize clearly what I am lamenting. But, you do not and can't. Don't write back
