this for some reason reminds me alot of something the blue man group would do. it has the same kind of feel and sound in ways. and in other ways it doesnt. good job i love it!!
Nice performance. No criticism intended, but this isn't prepared piano. Unless I am mistaken, the piano has not been altered, just played internally to accompany the laptop? Anyway, interesting no less.
@jlFr33zy005 - Indeed... The technique used is more akin to that which was originally used by Henry Cowell - he coined the term "string piano" - which involved playing the strings directly, muting them, strumming them, etc. - He is considered John Cage's 'mentor', of sorts. - I used the term "humanly prepared" to imply that instead of nuts and bolts and other items used to 'prepare' the piano, I am using 'human parts' to prepare it, thus, "humanly prepared".
There's nothing humane about putting you bare hands on piano strings. The oils from your hands will ruin the tone over time. In fact, John Cage's piano preparation is infinitely more humane, as you can alter the strings' tones without direct hand contact. Watch any professional pianist who gets inside the piano with his/her hands. He/She will almost always be wearing latex gloves.
rermarkable approach to piano preparation! Excellent. Appreaciate the sonority and tonality as well. Wonderfully pleasing to listen to. Fascinating to watch.
wow! this was amazing and exactly what I was looking for! when I was younger my music teacher played us a halloween CD of someone strumming the strings of a piano and it gave me some ideas. So, I started strumming the strings while holding down the damper pedal in a few of my songs but I can't do much with it. I was always hoping to find a video of someone doing more with the inside of the piano to give me ideas.
Depending on the situation, either a pick, or a handy fingernail will do. I think in that the videos on youtube, I actually used a US quarter... (nice rough edge for extra 'zing'... : )
Very inspiring indeed. Its great to take on the idea of prepared piano and turn into something of your own talent combining technology. Just a question, are you following the theory of chance music? What I mean by this is were the tracks pre-arranged or purely improvised when they were recorded?
Wow! I never seen anyone use a piano in this manner and I find completely revolutionary. It just goes to show that an instrument thats been around for hundreds of years (I think) can continue to amaze people such as myself.
excellent! big fan of prepared piano and looping here. fans of this should check out "dosh" for more looping wizardry. software? my guess is ableton live...
Very beautiful... playing around in pianos is something I like to do too... I'd love to hear this piece in a full band too... some MOlvaer wah-echo trumpet over the top...
What mics did you use, sir?

Don't let your talent go to waste! One track from your Christmas CD is ready to burn. "If not now, When?"
old Jewish proverb
FYI: I studied in CA with Cage's protege' Richard Bunger and he was as much a delightful genius as John. I know, I'm blessed.
