Lovely video! May I ask something? Does it take you only one pass to get those lovely flat blacks? I'm finding that it's taking me at least 3 coats, and I still can't get a flat area of black. Also, I'm finding that ink strokes are significantly lighter when I try using a brush for lines. Is it the ink I'm using?
@Pepperwheel90 One to two strokes. India ink takes much more labor, and still won't get your black you desire. There is a trick with Sumi. Let it sit for a few days, and it will start to evaporate and break down. Add a little bit of water to get a dense black. India becomes too flaking, when trying this technique. At the end of the day, using sumi out of the can should give you the blacks you want. Also try Rapidograph ink, you can get a wicked black!
Very nice video and it's always good to see how other people do their work.
One question though, that tool that you use to add white in the end, what exactly is that? And is it good for making nice highlights or is it more something you use to quickly indicate some lighting?
@Marciejjj It is a whiteout pen; When I first started to use it, I would use it to get a sketchy effect. You know, drawing flashlights, headlights, explosions, etc, etc. Later I found you can slow it down and get a chunky contour line. Very versatile!
@strangethingsmoss That's really cool, does it come from a certain brand? i.e. I got myself something from typp-ex in the shape of a pen, and you essentially squeeze it before the stuff comes out. I assume your's works similar?
@Marciejjj I use Bic, but that is because that is what is at the store, but yep. Same thing. I go through a lot of them, so I try to get them cheap as possible.
@marcobm97 I stay away from marker tips if I am doing actual pages, I don't get the same richness or weight that I get from rapidagraphs. That being said, I love using them for sketch books and mixed media work. Great to get loose with.
@strangethingsmoss what kind of ink do you use and does it get like easy to ink with it cuz is not the same with like a rapidagrahs or a pencil ... what kind of paper do you use for this ?
@marcobm97 I use a 2ply bristol board:smooth. Sumi you have to use within the first couple of weeks, for it breaks down. I get really good effects though with old Sumi ink. I also use vine charcoal if I want a rough texture, or I use the side of an old brush. I would say Sumi is easier to ink with, for you get instant gratification, and you don't have to labor over the ink to get it really black, like India ink. I use a rapidagraphs/blue pencils. Never regular pencils
@BleachigoSlash I use synthetic brushes, most of my brushes are really rough. I prefer to use dilapidated brushes, for they have very strong character. I have hundreds on them. I usually use pen for the face to give clarity.
I use what ever I can find, but what I keep coming back to is water color brushes. I believe there is one brush that is an end all, it is about comfort and speed.
@BleachigoSlash I use water color brushes 4,6, and 8 rounds. I use acrylic brushes/wall painting brushes for dry brushing. Never buy expensive brushes, for you will go through many, many brushes. Always keep a brush with a good tip on hand. Never throw away brushes, for they develop character and refine your style.
@strangethingsmoss haha totally what i do, "SHITFKDAMMIT well...another shadow wont hurt" love you're technique, i'm graduating from RMCAD this year for my illustration BA then i'm shifting gears to start comics at SCAD and i love traditional inking, thanks so much for the demo!

Heya! Love your drawings small question what do you use for correcting mistakes?
ColtartX 1 year ago
@ColtartX
I use a white-out pen. I get a little more control with the pen opposed to the white-out that comes in the jar.
But most of the time, I go with the flow of the ink. If I make a mistake then I brush over it and make a shadow. lol
strangethingsmoss 1 year ago
@strangethingsmoss Cool that would be intresting idea to do since i have problems with the ink
