can't really decide the ratio of self expression to just trying to break new ground. it can sound pretty contrived. if the whole deal is really more self expression, he would be better to talk to than listened to.
i have found his earlier albums (the glad fact, morning better last) to honestly be more interesting because of the fact that they're more focused on stripped down "self expression" than "trying to break new ground". i find that the more orchestral and grand his music is, the less it interests me...
some of it is just how well written these songs are, but primarily for me, its the way he's orchestrated the songs on albums, particularly the getty address, which is utterly nuts. have a listen to some of the recorded versions of songs from the getty address and you may see my perspective
The fact that he could do those constantly changing time signature patterns on his guitar and sing is amazing.
This man is so talented. Huge inspiration to see this.

I Think It's Pretty Cool It Sounds Nothing Like The Original. Imaginative.

i wanna see a tab of this, do you guys think he plays in a strange tuning?
notjohndoe2 2 years ago
It's in standard tuning. his voicings are all very unique. It shouldn't be too difficult to figure out by ear.

How? Sounds of old really... It's good, but I wouldn't venture into visionary territory with this guy.
