@RadioactiveTaco24 its not the laser scratching it and it started as he was lifting it upward the xbox is also meant to be stationed upright so that sort of lift should have not harmed teh disk by hte time i put the system back down the cd was alreaedy scratched(its the metal around the laser thats stationed to close to the cd) also the cd doesnt get locked in place its literaly loose on a spinning engine so it moves about with any kind of shock

That's why even the best laptops today with DVD drives still limit the speed to only 8x. The PS3's Blu-ray drive only reads DVDs at 8x. No-one moves desktop PCs whilst reading DVDs, so they can have drive speeds up to 25x. The 360 is a console where speed is a priority, hence the 12x speed. To summarize, it's a limitation of DVD drives, not the 360 :)

@Spulegence - Very few people rotate their desktop PCs to a horizontal or vertical position when there's a data DVD being accessed, there's no reason to move the PC, therefore it's unlikely you've done that :) The scratching problem is due to the speed the DVD disc is spinning. If it's faster than 8x (360 is 12x) then rotating the drive can cause the disc to touch the read head, and hence scratch the DVD. That's why even the best laptops (and also the PS3) limits the DVD speed to just 8x.

Also, besides limiting the DVD speed to 8x, another reason why your PS3 wouldn't scratch discs is because all Blu-ray discs have a tough anti-scratch protective coating, and so even if you rotated your PS3 fast enough to cause the disc to touch the read head, it still wouldn't leave a scratch. It would take a lot to scratch a BR disc :)
